  1. It takes a lot of work to make customers happy -- not simply hooking up some computers and hoping that everyone is happy. TCH is constantly doing things to improve their support - as can vew seen by their recent new web design, their new help site, new help desk support software -- all aimed at responding to problems quickly, or providing answers. Even a new name! Thanks for the kind wordsl -kw
  2. Spyderman, FYI, I know that with my DSL connection at home, my upload speed (128kb) is slower than my download speed (768kb). You might verify what you signed up for with your Internet connection. -kw
  3. Critical Mass rocks! :-) kw
  4. for those interested in cloaking, read this article -- or use Google to do a search on Cloaking! -kw
  5. We have a similar example posted on the TCH Help Web Site -kw
  6. that indeed is their problem. take a look at http://www.pacificbillingservices.com/contact%20us.htm -kw
  7. Most web servers run on Unix or Linux operating systems. A lot of Unix programs are installed by running a script from the Unix command line. This is very similar to being on a Windows computer and being told to go to a DOS command prompt to run a command, like 'ping' or something. In today's world, where accessing a server can be done over the Internet, a secured login (ssh) method of entering command line instructions was created. TCH, by default, does NOT enable SSH access without a valid reason. Most scripts that indicate that you "need" ssh access, can usually be installed using regular FTP client software. HTH! kw
  8. Good post! FYI ... to all: VNC was developed by AT&T's Cambridge group. It is not intrusive, and is a very well behaved app, IMO. Think of it as a low-end PC Anywhere type of product! And, since it is also open source, there are other groups who have added to VNC. (BTW, I refuse to install PC Anywhere on a system, but that's for another user forum!) For example, I have been successfully using TightVNC for nearly two years. You can also read how TightVNC differs from other VNC products by clicking here. -kw
  9. This is from the cPanel online documentation: The key line is highlighted ... and probably answers your question. Since the Entropy Search is part of cPanel, it appears that it only works against your entire web site, including subdomains or subdirectories. Personally, I have installed and used a web site search engine from Perl Services called PSLightning Search that will work on a single subdomain. Perhaps other TCH users have their favorite web search engine utility??? -kw
  10. You can use any FTP program you wish. There are several (some free, some $$$) that are generally accepted. Go to the new TCH Help Web Site and click on FTP. Not only will you find a list of suggested FTP utilities for your PC, but also movie tutorials on using two of them (WsFTP and CuteFTP). If or when you have specific questions, just ask. -kw
  11. I just compared neargeeks.net with neargeeks.org using CheckDNS and got the same IP address. I also ping'ed both the .net and .org URLs, and they also match: Z:\>ping neargeeks.org Pinging neargeeks.org [216.180.241.234] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=112ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Ping statistics for 216.180.241.234: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 108ms, Maximum = 112ms, Average = 109ms Z:\>ping neargeeks.net Pinging neargeeks.net [216.180.241.234] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Reply from 216.180.241.234: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=46 Ping statistics for 216.180.241.234: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 108ms, Maximum = 108ms, Average = 108ms Z:\>
  12. Yes, anything that you wish to make available to visitors to your website will need to be placed in the public_html . Consider your "WEBFOLDER" directory on your school site to be essentially equivalent to "public_html" directory on TCH. Therefore, you could go inside the public_html directory and create a directory images, and so on and so forth. -kw
  13. I think the answer is: it all depends. It depends on what you are submitting ... only your home page, or several or all pages? I would suspect that if your subdomain is acting almost as a separate web site, you woul want people to go to it separately, and therefore, you should submit it as if it was a separate web site. -kw
  14. that's exactly right .. your html pages (like page1.html) need to be uploaded into the public_html directory. You cxan do this either by using the File Manager feature of cPanel, or use an FTP utility. For FTP utilites, go to the TCH Help Site and click on FTP. We not only give you links to various FTP providers, but also we give you movie tutorials that you can learn from! Wahoo! -kw
  15. Welcome, aboard. Designing a web site is not always as easy as it looks. However, there are several packages that will allow you to get your first web site up fairly easily. CuteSITE Builder is one. 1st Page 2000 is another one. To see an example of CuteSITE Builder, look no further than the new TCH Help Web Site. -kw
  16. Beth, Appreciate your willingness to share your notes and comments about getting FP up and running. I have modified your comments slightly and have posted them to the new TCH Help Site. TCH Help Site FTP Instructions -kw
  17. Glad you like the tutorials. They are 'Macromedia flash' files (.swf). Suggest looking at software like 'CoffeeCup Firestarter' or 'Swish' for starters- they both create .swf compatible files. Not sure what software was used to create these tutorials, perhaps Macromedia Flash itself. -kw
  18. do you mind identifying how you resolved your problem? might help us in helping someone else down the road! -kw
  19. what error message are you getting? you're not sitting behind a firewall that's blocking access, are you? cpanel uses tcp port 2082 to communicate, and some company firewalls block some of these ports. -kw
  20. Grat idea, Bill! My suggestions for a charity are three that I support myself with my own money, and they focus on the areas of Housing, Food/Shelter, and our Youth: Habitat for Humanity Food for the Poor Covenant House -kw
  21. thanks, Lianna. I've added similar instructions to the banner page! 0kw
  22. This info is now conveniently available from the TCH Help Web Site home page. -kw
  23. If www.toalchoicehosting.com works (which it does), then that's all you need. BTW, index.html worked for me, but index.htm didn't - but who care? that's the job of the web server to find your home page, isn't it? (Just wondering out loud) -kw
  24. Hey, BH, you got us on that one. We relocated and upgrades our TCH company's web sites the other day, and it looks like the ad images decided they liked their old server space better! It's not perfect ... but I did have 4 of the TCH banners stored away, and have added them to a page on the TCH Help site --- Click here for ad images! -kw
  25. Our TCH users are the best! I've included some of their comments about Search Engine usage on the new TCH Help Site -kw
