Well, Mitch, I must say that the articles were always enjoyable, even if they were about something I already knew. Usually you'd find a way to throw out something I didn't know so it was great! They were fun to read too because of your writing style. Another thing is that they are great for the new folks (to whatever topic you are writing about) because you don't write "over their heads." Who knows, you may even help someone who is looking for articles about leaving their computer on versus turning it off to find the best hosting company west of the Atlantic Ocean! If you can manage, I'd sure like to see them come back. (But at the same time being a freelance web designer and paper book author as well as my full time computer support job I can sure understand not having the free time to do yet another project.) Jim

Another problem is that it's up to the spider author to be honest and respect your robots.txt file. There is no reason, other than honor, that a spider has to obey your wishes.

Another option is to leave your files named .htm or .html and add the following lines to your .htaccess file which tells the server to check for PHP code even if the file does not end in .php

Robert, Your site does not show when I look either. It is very likely the crawler misinterpreted your "Allow" as "go away and leave me alone." If you fix it you should get hits again. It may take awhile though so hang tight. The metas really have a miniscule effect on Google. As was mentioned, other SE's use it so it's good to have it right but it's not the cause of your drop. Another thing is that sometimes during recalculations at Google a site will drop off and come back in a day or two. Whatever you do, don't panic and change your whole site! Fix the robots.txt and work slowly and patiently. I couldn't find any links from other sites to you to speak of either. They help your ranking tremendously.

I don't. With browsers at 16 or 24-bit color depths it becomes moot. Most folks have that now and if not I don't care too much if it's maroon on Macs and burgundy on Pcs. It's close enough for the work I do to be fine in any case.

As I said, I'm not up on decoding the script but it seems that's what's going on. Hope it helps!

I've been a hardcore computer geek since I saw my first one in 1976 and bought one in 1977. I'm a programmer by training (formal and otherwise) and at the time Mosaic was available I was writing multi player computer games. When I saw the first web page it was a way my computer geek side and my non-artsy side could produce something almost artistic. I totally love being able to use my computer skills to make something sorta artistic. It's like the first paint program - "Wow! I can finally make a straight line and a proper curve!" The scientific uses for research were even more obvious then because that's about all that had web sites. That also apealed to me as something that would be (become) a great tool. Boy has it! You can find anything on the 'net from how to build a nuke to the latest way to cook meat using only the sun safely and nearly free. You gotta love it!

I agree with Mike. More inbound links give Google more ways to get to you and a better chance of a deep crawl (which is when it visits every page). Otherwise, if they hit your front page then you have to believe they will eventually get to it but the wait is always painful. Do not resubmit your page to Google. That will only bump you to the bottom of the list and they may see you as a spammer which would be way bad. As far as I know, other than that, just wait.

How are you doing the australia only mode? Nevermind. I found it. Most of the results end in .AU in the domain name. Not all but I'd bet that has a lot to do with your site dropping lower.

There are a few ways you can tell what server you are on. A couple have been mentioned already here but something else you can usually do on a Windows machine is this: Go to Dos (Start - Run - Command or cmd) Type: tracert mysite.com The last line usually shows the server. Mine is: 16 81 ms 80 ms 80 ms server30.totalchoicehosting.com [69.57.134.37] so I can see I'm on server30. Hope it helps!

Dreamweaver here. 4 until about 2 months ago when I go MX. It's very clean code for a WYSIWYG editor and their CSS support is really nice. They pretty much have their act together better than any others I've seen. If I code by hand it's HTML-Kit which is an excellent product for that type of development. I, too, used Netscape Composer and thought it was great until I figured out what I and it was doing. Used FrontPage for awhile but the extra fluff and the weird navbar stuff forced me away. When I hit on Dreamweaver and php includes and CSS I figured I'd arrived

The latest for me is Neverwinter Night - awesome game for the FRP type of genre. It wastes too much of my time though! (Guess that means it's good eh?)

Jason (and all), I am a Christian. I believe it to be the true depiction of the way the universe is and all that relates to it. I also do not subscribe to the "policitally correct" philosophy of today that we should never offend anyone at any cost. If we did this with strict adherance we would never say, nor possibly think, anything of any substance because everyone has an opinion and you can bet that someone in the world has a different one than yours. That aside, and thanks for bearing with me while I made my position clear, the forums here do and should relate to things web-ish. That covers a lot from search engines to php to backend services. We do have an open discussion area but it should be kept to lighthearted discussions, IMO. I do not think the TCH Family Forum is a proper place for a Christian forum, although I have found many Christians that are members here and obviously have no problem with the content. If a member were to create such a forum I don't think there would be a problem with dropping in a simple note in open discussion that says "Hey, I created a Christian forum, come check it out." as long as it followed the TOS and AUP. I don't think it is a matter of having to accomodate other beliefs or even a matter of how difficult it would be to moderate but rather it is a matter of TCH is all-things-hosting-related. Plain and simple. I am surprised that anyone would be offended by the suggestion - as a Christian I would not be offended by someone wanting to create an atheist forum, for example, but I also would not hang out there. I would simply reply as I did to this suggestion and state that I don't think TCH is the place for it. That's a great film Timur! The way it develops the story in reverse is still engaging. Many backwards timelines just have a climax and then it's downhill from there. Yours gets better and more dramatic as it goes along. Great Job! Jim

Traeger Designs - sounds like artists only though. Traeger Solutions (or Traeger Web Solutions) - more open ended. I'd avoid consulting. It's over used and has a negative connotation in some folks minds. Traeger Tech's pretty neat sounding. Remember you'll have to pronounce these on a phone and you'll want it to be easy to say and memorable. Traeger & Associates sounds like a one-man show but wants to be a big shot. (to me anyway) Or you could go totally wild an make someting like Tragerville where you can get anything you want for your computing delight. Ok, I guess you now know why I'm not in the marketing field!

That would be a tough one Phillip since we have the "Add Me To The Family" section where anyone can get a link from TCH (valuable to help your rating in search engines) just for putting a link back to us. Make sure you get your site listed there too. It's free, easy and really does help to have an incoming link.

Just make sure you have a automatic shut-down Uninteruptable Power Supply, firewall and virus software if you're on broadband. Don't want anything nasty to happen while you're away from the keyboard. I have seen the discussion often in the past and the engineers usually say something about heat-cold cycles cracking the motherboard and everyone else saying that there's no reason to leave it on. It's like the argument "Should I leave my AC on when I'm not home because cooling a totally hot home costs so much it's cheaper to leave it on all day." The answer depends on how well insulated your home is. In this case, HG is exactly right, what's the environment of the PC.

You may want to remind your client that doing that would make that account a spam magnet and that's not a good thing for your main email address. If it was client@whatever.com then you can use Spam Assassin here at TCH and some other things with junk email and if everything goes bad just change the address if needed. (I hope that made sense - it's a long day.) Besides, it's just one-click in favorites to get to tch mail. If the client is stubborn then just give in and wait for the "I told you so" moment.
