It may not be directly related to TCH but maybe the receiver's ISP for instance. Extra loads of spam that has to be sorted through could cause a bit of a slow down but I doubt it is enough to account for even 3 hours, muchless 13. Definitely do a helpdesk ticket and have the techs look at the logs.

If you have shell access (some older accounts have it but no new ones) you can look at the man page for ls. I know in the native sh you can do an ls -lR for details and recursion (It's been a long time since I Un*x'd but I think that's it). If you are looking for a graphical tree-like thing then you'll have to go to a 3rd party util.

Hi Mattis! To answer your questions: 1. The scripting is working very fast because TCH does limit the number of clients on a server. It is generally based on the impact to performance and if a server starts to get a little "busy" then they'll move folks off to a new server. When I started less than a year ago I was on server 30. They have almost 70 now. This is largely due to Head Guru's way of doing business - he won't put clients on slow servers. 2. There are add on's for extra bandwidth and disk space. You could look at the pricing for getting a smaller account and adding bandwidth. 3. You can either transfer your domain or, more simply, tell your current registrar (not the host) that you want to use different name servers and after 24-72 hours people going to your domain would end up on the system here instead of your old host. Then they could do whatever they want with the account and it won't matter. I hope this helps and maybe we'll be seeing you around as a family member soon. Best wishes!

Of course not. If I were a shady character I'd load it up and ping a client all day and then brag about how great my work was. It's a good point you make and reinforces my premise that it really doesn't show much that's useful.

About the "Recommend To A Friend", I'd think it may not be a good thing because every time I get something like that I instantly think gimick, spam or "Yeah, sure you know my friend Bob!" This problem has been around for awhile. I know the techs here have contacted Roadrunner about it and as far as I know have not even gotten a response from them. They can add to this or correct me if I'm wrong when they stop by. (Moving thread for better organization)

Sure there are things we can do. One thing is to never try out any "security programs" out of curiosity or any other reason. If things are restricted here it's for a reason (like shell access) and if we install programs that try to go around those restrictions we are begging to get kicked out. Another is to have a great password on everything, including the ftp accounts we set up. A great password is not in the dictionary, not easy to guess, not too short, not only numbers or only letters. If we set our password to our dog's name then we're begging to be hacked. An excellent thing to do is to make sure your server is always up to date with the latest security patches. Even Linux has mistakes or oversights that occasionally make it vulnerable. Bill and the techs here are all over these updates! I suspect that's why they had to do the emergency kernel updates mentioned in another thread because a vulnerability was found and patched. We have great servers and uptime here since they do these kinds of updates - a hacked system is usually down a long time. If you install third party software then pick only the best quality ones and watch for updates from the creators. Things like phbbb and other forums, chats, etc. can open the door to hackers if they have problems so make sure you always keep an eye on the support forums and security announcements from the makers of the software. A basic system with good passwords is not going to get hacked. One with "password" as the password or buggy forum software probably will. Check your logs and you'll probably find 401 - Not Found errors for formmail and other known-exploitable software. These guys are out there looking for sites that are weak so we have to be sure we don't open the door. In a few words, don't get lazy. I hope this helps and will put your mind a bit at ease.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, PR is the Google PageRank and it is their measure of how popular a page is. It ranges from 0 to 10 and it is easier to get from 1 to 2 than from 4 to 5. It measures how many pages link to yours, the PR of those pages, etc. If you get several pages with high PR linking to yours then yours will be higher than if they had low PR. It is by no means an ultimate measure of things but it is used somewhat heavily in the calculations of where Google puts your page when folks search for your keywords.

Using last month (MAR) for an example: 534 unique visitors MSN - 95 Yahoo - 64 Google - 53 It was flipped a few months ago but since Google changed their algorithm in November and my site went way-low on their SE the numbers have dropped... as one would expect. I have pretty high rankings on several other SEs so it also stands to reason Yahoo and MSN would bring me more traffic since I'm higher there. I wonder, if all other things were equal, how they would compare if for example we were #3 on all 3 SEs. It is interesting that Google dropped a fair amount and Yahoo and MSN picked up even more than G dropped.

Try booting in safe mode. This will eliminate a lot of possibilities. (I think ME has safe mode.) Anyway, if you can it will prevent a lot of things from loading up at first. If that works put Stinger on a floppy on another PC and load it on this one. (Google "Stinger.exe") This is the best-fast-small-most popular-recent virus checker around and gets most of the "biggies". After that get a full blown package if you think it's a virus. There are free ones like AVG from grisoft.com which people swear by. This will get you started down the right path. If you can get anything like a stable system make sure you back up everything you can if it's not already done. Hope it helps!

Agreed that cultures are different and such, and certainly that no one here meant to offend anyone else. I don't think there is any question of that. On the other hand, just because something doesn't offend you doesn't mean it shouldn't. (With regards to anime, young girls, etc.) HCSuperstore-Bill's view is not unique on this. I too think that it is improper to pose young girls in such suggestive ways and then for (any) society to accept it as if it were nothing. Why don't they ever make 35 year old anime stars? Why are they always seductively posed? Does this youthful art style have an effect on people that is improper? Check out the American Heritage definition of "anime": Anime is not even really mainstream in Japan I personally am disappointed in how society has become so free about sexual things, especially when involving young people. The US is not the only country that says you can't photograph and distribute pics of 10 year old girls in blatantly sexual poses - what's the diff if they are drawn or photographed? Many say that America is so stuffy about sex that they are damaging their kid's psyche... have they not seen Brittney and Madonna kissing? Have they not seen Ms. Jackson being nasty at the superbowl? An email service I use has a header that shows the score as *'s. I haven't looked here to see if it is standard or something they customized. I just set a filter where header is **** to my Spam4 folder and *** to my Spam3 folder. This way I know I can cruise through the Spam4's because there's little chance of something legit there and then take a second on the Spam3's because they're not as "spammy". I hope maybe this can work for you too.

I use sneakemail.com which gives me addresses that forward to me but if they start collecting spam I can delete them.

Yeah, it's anime but you gotta admit that the pose could be a bit more, ah, modest. I think that's the thing upsetting Bill is the pose + youth, but it could be argued that it is exactly that which is the purpose of anime. Going back and looking at the full picture, not just the face, I don't think I'd want to have that on my teenage son's desk (if I had a teenage son)

If someone has the patience and access to the knowledge to do it a custom made by someone who knows the score is the best bet. It's just too easy sometimes to let a big gun do it for you. No one I have heard says meta tags are bad. Many say they are worthless. In either case I'd put them in if you want to get in the search engines. For instance, some of them use the description meta tag to tell folks what your site's about. If your different pages have different focus then sure, use different tags. If they are all just "more of the same" as many blogs are, or if you are not worried about the sub-pages coming up in a search engine then don't even worry about the tags.

It may not be as cool as it seems. Here are some more facts about Alexa. It is not a true measure of traffic. It shows so-called stats based on the number of visitors that have their bar loaded. It is not an indication of anything, really. Google and others can show who links with less privacy problems. Just put +www.+mydomain.+com into Google to see who's linking to your site. It's a lot more reliable than Alexa. They are recording your browsing steps. The way they tell you that people browsing your site also went to this and that is that they track your web movements. This alarms most folks and I for one am not interested in that level of scrutiny. I hope it works out for you since you seem to enjoy it so much but make sure you read all the "fine print" that goes with it.

But we must remember the anti-drug commercial where the parents are the kid's friends and let her do pretty much whatever she wants and she's saying in the commercial that "I need parents! I don't need friends." There is a good deal of truth to that because as friends, parents are IMO too lenient and the child does not learn the tough things of "Do this because it will be good for you," but just the "do whatever feels good" road to destruction. Not that this is any way related to you, Robert. I guess you turned out pretty ok. I suspect there were times that your father had to be "not your friend but your father" and did so. The key is learning how to be both whenever applicable.

Sorry, I don't. For what it's worth, I have a Sony laptop at work and it is solid but more expensive than its counterparts. I had an HP computer that was a nightmare and I'm a programmer/repair type professional so I pity anyone with similar experiences who isn't. I own a Dell Dimension 4400 that I cranked up the drive, mem, etc and love it. I think for the equipment Dells are the best, IMO. I work with HP and Compaq at work and while they are not dismal I'd rather have a Dell. Disclaimer: Everyone's experiences differ. These are my experiences and opinions only.
