  1. Hey Ty, If you have to update every file you have, why not insert a line to PHP-include a file and then from now on all you have do to is add things to that file that are not position dependent like this script. Here's a page about PHP Includes with a lot of good info to get started if you've not done it before.
  2. It is most likely that they are simply putting your email address in the from field of the spam mail. I expect that you have nothing to worry about except the annoying notices.
  3. You could use a web server package - Abyss is one for Windows, I don't know about Macs. Then your computer becomes a web server that can access others with absolute URLs if you wish.
  4. On the reseller page it was much harder to get it to trip out and the only thing I noticed was the words on the left side shifted up a tiny bit but not out of place either way. Maybe I just wasn't holding my mouth right. I understand about CSS and tables. I played briefly with it before but when I found out how inconsistent the browsers were on it I decided that tableless design was for another time.
  5. Tracy, I looked at your source and think there's a more reliable way to do the layout for your page. You currently have 3 tables for the captions but the images are outside the tables. I think if you include the pics in table rows with the captions interspersed it would work better. You would probably be better off with: ><TABLE> <TR> <TD> image 1 stuff </td> <td> image 2 </td> <td> image 3 </td> </tr> <tr> <td> caption 1 </td> <td> caption 2 </td> <td> caption 3 </td> </tr> etc... This may be what's confusing the browser, although it shouldn't. I think making it one table with 6 rows and 3 columns each will suit you better. Hope it helps!
  6. Tracy, I'm using Firebird 0.7 and on your example page the 1st 2 rows are fine but the last row is doing what you describe. The one thing I noticed is that when I reload and the captions line up, the pictures in that row shift slightly to the left. There may be something at or right before the 1st pic in the 3rd row that is causing the problem. Sorry I don't have any ideas but at least I confirmed it's not just you!
  7. Welcome to the family, Kris! If you need anything just ask!
  8. You will not be able to use Hotlink Protection if you use only one images folder. If that's not a problem for you then using a single folder makes much more sense than duplicating content across several.
  9. Thanks for the input Allen! Unfortunately there's not much I know of that can be done about the domain administration but I'm sure if there is that Head Guru will do whatever it is as soon as it become available.
  10. Bandwidth does cost money but you may not need to even back up everything. For instance, one of my customer's sites is just a basic web page. It is about 8 megs but has no guestbooks or forums. Now on that site I create the pages here on my PC and ftp them to the TCH account. There is really no need to back those up because the "latest and greatest" version is here already and I would lose nothing if the site were deleted right now except some time. If you have blogs or guestbooks or databases that need to be backed up then you MUST do that. If you do not then it is real bad if something happens to them. This is, however, smaller than the whole site. The whole site backup is easy via cpanel but if bandwidth concerns are there then think about only backing up what can not be easily replaced. Either way we must all keep backups or we are being reckless.
  11. You can not do the sub-folder idea. The best way for 4 different domains under one admin is to get a reseller account.
  12. Server 8 just recently died. Here's the timeline of key pieces: 5:53 AM - down 8:16 AM - diagnosed and pronounced dead. 8:49 AM - server rebuilt 9:26 AM - Operating system reinstalled 7:30 PM - cPanel restored, Backups restored, quirks worked out. This was a worse case scenario with the entire server smoking itself. If it were a simple hack as you described then it would have been more on the order of 10 hours for a full restore... and this server was pretty heavily utilized too. You can see the whole thing as it unfolded at http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...?showtopic=6868 I don't think you can beat it unless you keep on-server backups and they are not as secure. Hope it helps!
  13. Great point Raul. Considering the passwords we are assigned when we create our accounts I'd say that TCH is using pretty doggon good passwords Take my password for example: *#,32.agt - no one would ever guess that! Seriously, a strong password is the first line of defense and even the old Compuserve "secure" password suggestion of 2 unrelated words separated by a special character is not good enough anymore. At work my password is a pronouncable-yet-nonsense word that is easy to remember but impossible to guess. The one I use here is as uncommon as the example I gave above. Also, Raul is right about the server software but I was thinking on the line of viruses and trojans since that's what we've been facing at work a lot. Not too many of them for the Linux flavors but windows has tons out there.
  14. As Jennifer said, sorta, you have to set your IM settings to allow anyone to see that you are online. If you only let your buddies see your status then the little program can't see that you are online.
  15. Other than being based in Linux which is not as susceptible to hacks as a Windows based server? I'd say the best defense is daily off-site backups. In the case of a mass disaster they can restore to a state less than 24 hours old. That's pretty good stuff.
  16. You can change without growing but you can not grow without changing. These changes are pretty exciting and shows that Head Guru's really looking out for us and is willing to make some potentially hard decisions to make it happen. Thanks for making TCH the best, Bill! It's going to be cool to see where we are in another year from now!
  17. I dunno, with 50-ish servers in total the percentage of downtime is pretty small. Besides, a famous person once said there are 2 kinds of statistics, lies and d**n lies. If you only considered that one day and one server the uptime may be 20-something percent. If you consider the past year and all 50-ish servers it is likely 99.99 and if you consider only server 30 that I've been on since the start of my relationship with TCH it is probably statistically 100% Not that TCH plays those games, but it's all in the interpretation.
  18. Welcome to the team, Robert! Good choice guys! Thumbs Up If you need any help on anything just ask!
  19. It's unfortunate that you feel you were brushed off. I can assure you that the Head Guru and all of the staff take user requests and complaints very seriously. As with any tool that TCH uses from a 3rd party, that company can do as they wish and TCH must react. If they change things then TCH can, as a client, make inquiries and request changes or answers but it is up to that provider to respond to the problem. It's like your local cable company showing you the NBC network. If the NBC source shorts out and they stop sending the feed then it's not your cable company's fault, nor is it in their ability to do anything about it but put up a "technical difficulty" sign. I am sure Alertra has been contacted about the reports and that we are waiting on a response to the situation but since I was not the one to contact them I will leave it at that. Hopefully they will have a response soon.
  20. The Head Guru is considering offering Windows as an option but there is no definite plans or decision yet.
  21. Brother, you are already in the grave and working on a rut which is just a grave with the ends knocked out. Stop now, beg forgiveness and pray hard!
  22. Unless something has changed recently this is because anon ftp is not supported for our virtual hosting customers. There are to many security risks for anon ftp to run on a shared server. Sorry for the confusion... it's just too risky.
  23. Welcome to the family! We're glad it's been a pleasure so far and are here to help if you need anything!
  24. The sun is shining beautifully here.... But the voices in my head said to be online at 5:00 pm Eastern time so maybe something big is about to happen.
  25. Why not? This is the exact thing that happens in every field of business in America anyway. It is only that a few are actually powerful enough to make it into the news. About 20 years ago there was a new fast-food mexican restaraunt named Zantigo's in my home state. They were doing a great job until Pepsico came in and said "Hey, they're killing our Taco Bell market" and bought them out. Some closed and others transformed. The same thing happened with Burger Queen which became Druthers which was bought out by Dairy Queen. It's a story that is repeated every day in America. The powerful or fortunate become quasi-monopolies and the others have stiff competition. Sometimes monopolies are the result of simply one guy having the best product and no one else having a clue or a solid market. As far as Google being complacent, that would mean they were self-satisfied and unconcerned. If that were the case the algorithms would never change... they would sit back and say "We are the only game in town - live with what you got." Besides, I've never seen any company unconcerned with a money maker like Google is.
