As a tax accountant, this is the one day of 'tax season' that brings me a few smiles... you can only imagine what I tell clients today about how their tax returns came out. woooot

And the beat goes on.... Judging from all the others who have posted with this same problem, it is rampant. I am still getting emails supposedly from the staff of my own domain (there is no staff... just me) several times a day that come with infected attachments which I, of course, do not open. It is really annoying. Mad!!! That and the bounced emails that I never sent to begin with. Those come with viruses too sometimes. I keep blocking the sender with IE tools, just to hopefully minimize these from getting through, but they must use different ip addresses every time. Hasn't anyone come up with a way to keep people from spoofing?

Good stuff! Thumbs Up May I suggest that you give your site some continuity by using the same background for each page and keeping that background neutral so it doesn't distract from your wonderful photos. VI

Angela, I'm definitely no guru, but I think I know what your problem is. The nameserver is changed not via your old host, but via the registrar of your domain name, the company that you purchased your domain name from and registered it through.. Mine, for example, is is itsyourdomain.com. When you log on to that company's site, you should find a link to a page where you can manage your account and point your nameserver to your new home here at TCH. VI

I've had a similair problem with Horde. What I think happens is that Horde logs you out after a period of inactivity, but you don't know you're logged out while you're typing your message. Because you're logged out, the message can't be sent until you log back in, and by then it is gone because you have been taken to a new screen. My solution has been to refresh my inbox (which either prompts me to log back in if I've been logged out, or makes note of some activity to keep Horde from logging me out) before either composing or replying to an email. Another thing you can do is copy the entire text of your message to the clipboard before trying to send... it beats retyping it every time.

In the topic list, the far right column, "Last Action," is a hotlink to the last post in the thread, You can click on it and scroll up from there if you want.

Waynemac brings up an interesting question: what do all the symbols and icons mean? I found a key on a couple of the pages, but it is very incomplete. For Instance... What are the differences between Blue and Yellow TCH initials on the main forum page? What about the rest of the icons that are used that are not shown in that key. Does anyone have a complete list?

I was having the same problem with getting fonts I installed to show up in Word. I started a thread about it that got moved to "Software Talk." I finally solved my problem and posted my solution. Here it is again: "It seems that downloading fonts to c/windows/fonts is not enough. You have to then install them by going to start > controlpanel > fonts and clicking on file> install new font and then selecting the font to be installed. Once you do this, the font will appear in the drop-down list in Word, Outlook Express and wherever else there are font choices." Hope this helps....

Well our only solace here in Phoenix in the summertime is knowing that it's even hotter in Yuma! But it sure is beautiful now. I hiked out at Saguaro Lake on Saturday and up in Sedona on Sunday... you can't ask for a better weekend than that. I played hookey from work and I'm paying for it now... tax season you know.... there aren't supposed to be weekends for me this time of year. But with weather like this I just couldn't help myself!

Yay!!!! I was hoping this would happen when I 'nominated' you to moderate a forum for us web-wannabes! You have a wonderful knack for making your answers understandable and you can be sure I'll be asking you lots of questions! What forum will you be moderating? I've read through this thread and didn't see it... I must have missed the initial announcement. Anyway congrats...

Shussat, Madman, and Glenn, Thanks so much for the replies. It's a lot to consider. I'll check out all those links and recommendations. My husband gave up that job too! Well not exactly... If I just wanted prints to email or post to share with family and friends, everything would be easy... I'd just use the digital camera or have my photos put onto a disc by the photo lab and be good to go. But I'm an artist... my images begin with photographs and develop from there. The prints I show and sell are anywhere from 12x18 on paper to 30x40 on canvas and/or silk. That's why I need such high resolution. I love the idea of skipping the scanner and getting them on disc from the lab, but I'm afraid I won't get the quality I need to make large, saleable prints. I could be wrong (I've never really seen the discs these labs produce)... do you happen to know what kind of resolution they provide? Right now I scan my photos in with the output set to 8x12 inches at 300 dpi. The file size usually ends up at about 20 megs. For really large prints I increase the image size and leave the res at 300 and resample. Doesn't work with every image, but does with most since my style does not really call for sharp edges. So, knowing all this, do you still think I can get away with not having a scanner and getting my photos on disc from the photo lab? I guess you're right about simply not having the inclination to use the digital camera... I'm afraid I won't have the flexibility I can get with all my lenses (I use a 500mm zoom to shoot surfers and windsurfers, a lowlight lens for nightscapes, a wideangle for small indoor spaces, etc, etc.). I know the digitals are improving every day, but I don't think they're for me... at least not the ones I can afford! But again, I could be wrong. I haven't researched them lately. And I have some custom images from other people's digital photos and even from disposable cameras and underwater point and shoots. I'm sure I could get some worthwhile shots with digital, just not as many as I get now. No, the printer would be for my workshops... for printing images after they have been edited, not before. I will be conducting Photography/Photoshop workshops/tours in Europe and other locations, showing people how I do what I do. My plan is to take them out shooting each morning, get 1 hour processing while we eat lunch, and then work with their photos in a demo/workshop each afternoon or evening (hence the projector). I'd like to give each participant a print of one of their own photos that has been manipulated by me during the demos to take home. But I did say "maybe a small printer" because I also know that I could print stuff for them when I get home from the workshops and send them to them. But if I spend a lot of time away (like a month or so), I might want to do some printing for marketing purposes (show local galleries what I can do with their own local scenery) and also to print draft copies of book pages and other things I'm working on. I just feel like if I'm going to work away from home, I might need a samll printer. But maybe not. What's HDD? I'm not sure I need an internal floppy... my files are so big that I often copy them to cd's to free up space on my hard drive. Do I need a floppy if I have a cd? Glenn... I may just come down there to almost Apache Junction and kidnap you to come shopping for this system with me! With any luck at all, Costco will carry some of these items! Darn! If only! Actually (and don't tell anyone), I don't do my own developing... I'm not even that good a photographer. That's why I took up Photoshop!

Good morning all: I plan to be doing a lot of travelling in the coming months and I want to put together a system that will allow me to continue to work and also to put on my workshops in a remote location. I need a laptop (PC), small scanner (even if it only scans 4x6 photographs it will be enough), projector, and maybe a small printer. It has to be lightweight as I will be carrying all this equipment in addition to all my photography equipment ( which is non-digital, 35 mm camera with assorted lenses, filters, tripod, and separate underwater camera etc. - very heavy but I can't do without any of it!) through airports and on all manner of public transportation. Also everything needs to work in both the US and in Europe. I need to be able to scan in photographs at high resolution, run Photoshop, and work on image files that average 17-25 megs each. Other than that, I'll need internet, email, Word, and an image viewer (probably ACDSee). And of course dvd/cd player to keep me entertained! I know nothing about hardware so I'm seeking some input on what I should be looking for in terms of memory, ports and other capabilities. Also brand recommendations would be very helpful. I leave for work shortly and won't be able to get back on the forum till later, so please don't feel slighted if I don't respond to your replies immediately. Also, if you could keep your responses in plain English (as opposed to computerese) I will be most grateful! My husband used to do all this for/with me, but he has informed me that he no longer wants the job of being my "computer consultant" so please bear with all my questions. I'm lost!

I'm not offended by your opinions. You are welcome to them. I'm offended by the idea that you think you need to impose them upon others in their own environments. Doesn't your church have sunday school classes or other places where you can learn or teach about Jesus in an appropriate setting? Or can't you invite people to your home for that purpose? When I sign on to the forums in search of a solution to an IT problem or in hopes of helping others with problems they might be having or just in hopes of sharing some comraderie, I don't think it's right that I, or any other non-christian 'family' member, should be made to feel like an outsider or like someone who needs saving or educating. This is a webhosting company so I assume you have a website. Perhaps you should put your christian forum on your own site. I'm sure many TCH family members would be happy to participate there. Sorry Glenn... I just saw your post, but I've got to speak my mind.

I think that is the most inappropriate suggestion imagineable and I am offended.

Help Me Choose A New Business Name!
Virtual Imager replied to kaseytraeger's topic in Open Discussion
With a little tweaking, any of the names you were considering can be used with "Rocky Mountain" or "Wilderness" replacing Traeger. For example: Rocky Mountain Technology Associates... Wilderness Consulting (that kind of sounds like a survival camp seminar for business people!)... Wilderness Web Solutions, etc. -
Help Me Choose A New Business Name!
Virtual Imager replied to kaseytraeger's topic in Open Discussion
Are you sure you want to keep your name in there? It's not always a plus (not your name in particular, but the use of an individual's name). Often the use of one's name keeps things seeming very small or limited. Think "Kish Hosting Company" ... would we all really be here? The use of an individual's name does not give one a sense of a large operation with full-time support, and things like longevity and continuity are not implicit. One tends to wonder what happens if the principal gets sick or needs a vacation. The other thing to consider is that building a business is building an asset. The value of a business is very much dependent upon its marketability as a transferrable asset. In the event that you build up a considerable client base with the associated goodwill that goes along with that, you may at some point have a very saleable commodity and you might want to retire or sell and remove the equity you've built up in this business. At that point, having your name on it would be considered a minus... It would be much harder to sell. You can sell your client list, but I can tell you from experience (I sold my accounting practice a few years ago) that that is not as good a deal for the seller. Client lists are generally sold on a 'retention' basis and the only thing that will keep them with 'Traeger and Associates' or 'The Traeger Group' is Traeger. Clients of a firm like "TotalChoice Web Design" (as an example) are more likely to stay with the firm through a change of ownership... they know going in that staff of the company is subject to change. It's not a conscious thing, but the effect is real. At least in my experience. IMHO you should re-think your basic premise... VI -
Thanks Thomas... I guess I'd better subscribe to that Security forum as well. Just what I need! I thought 'Open Discussions" and the 'Family Only' forums would be enough to keep me in the loop. Now I'll never be able to leave my computer! LOL

This morning I got not one, but TWO emails from someone purporting to be the 'staff' at my own website (There is no staff, just me) telling me that a large amount of infected emails and spam were emanating from my email account and that I could use the attached files to clean up my computer. Norton deleted one of the files... the other one was called textfile.zip. The senders were staff@**** and noreply@****. This is a particular nasty way to spread a virus, don't you think? In my case, there are not a lot of email accounts set up for my domain, but some of you might have quite a few and it might be that, if you're infected with this thing, all your users will think this email is coming from you or your staff and will open the attachments. Please warn your email users. I'm attaching the body of the messages I received: and It's scary out there! VI

High Virus Alert - How Are Tch Servers Doing?
Virtual Imager replied to HCSuperStores's topic in Security Discussions
Excellent suggestions! Thanks Bruce and Glenn! Rock Sign -
i like jamescpa.biz. I think the hyphen is too easy to forget.... jamescpa all flows together and the dot biz can be seen as very professional... very cpa-ish. I might not recommend it for a retail store or something like that, but for a cpa firm it could be seen as pretty cool. Besides, if your site is likemost cpa sites, it is mainly for communicating with your existing clients and potential clients you have already identified and perhaps given your card to.... coming up in a search engine might not be quite as important.

Dang.... I was planning on a couple of twenties for breakfast! I guess I'll have to stir-fry them instead. VI
