Samantha, It's not just the search engines, but many ISP's cache your pages as well. If 15 AOL users go to your site close to the same time, the odds are good that most will get cached pages, not fresh content. I have heard of some of these ISPs causing problems on particularly dynamic sites by doing this and having the cached version for days. Hopefully they are not doing it too much, but you can't guarantee everything's real-time. The no-archive is a great tool for search engines caching pages, but as I understand it from the Google site, if they can get current they do - the cached is only used if you click on "cache" or if they can't get to your site.

Thanks Raul! I used the Sams book "... in 24 hours" to start out and it is a very good start for the beginner. Being a pro-programmer it was a bit simple for me but sometimes that's a good thing. I'll have to check out Raul's suggestion as it seems a bit more "guts and glory" stuff.

Are you looking for suggestions of the feeds to feature or the technology to implement it? For the latter you can check hotscripts.com and other scripting sites for packages that will do it. The former is all up to personal preferences and the type of site you are making.

There are some good/free website templates out there. I found one I am currently implementing at www.oswd.org/most_popular.phtml - take a look and see if any suit your needs and of course google for "free web templates" and such and peek around. If you have time and desire, Paul's suggestion is, as they say, spot on and will allow you to build your toolbox of skills tremendously so don't take the easy way out if you have the time and desire to get good at making your own.

As many shifty people that call them SEO experts as there are out there, I'd agree with David on the cold call thing. I'd never use someone that contacted me cold. Listey also has a great link there to go to for advice. I learned a lot there myself. The people who are regulars there that do SEO/SEM/Copy Writing are high caliber and I'd trust any of the regulars. Be prepared to pay for what you get though because that level of expertise is expensive. If you do have time to hang in that forum you can request a review for SEO purposes after I think 20 messge posts... just to make sure you're not a drive-by-review requester. Of course, you can always come here and ask anything and if we know we'll tell ya!

Good words, Rob. Steve, why do you want so much to rank high for Reiki? From just looking at your site it seems you only would have something for the person in Australia. Why would you care if a person in Florida, USA comes to your site? I can rank tops for "Key West Hotel Jim's Inn" but not be in the top 100 for "Key West Hotel" or in the top 10000 for "hotel" just because the specific words in my first search term. Honestly, if the person is in Louisville, Ky at the Kentucky Derby looking for a hotel then I don't care if they ever come to my site. Rob's right, make your site for visitors and that will give you more mileage than anything else. You should still get specific hits when you break it up because the guy looking for Reiki in Quensland will find your page on that town for sure... even if he never sees the main page. Finally, ranking depending on the number of repetitions of the keyword is the wiay it used to be, but not for a long time. The engines are smarter than that because people started putting "reiki reiki reiki reiki..." at the bottom of the pages and the search engines became useless because of the scammers. That's partly why they went to using page ranking based on links TO your site from other (related) sites.

People letting the web autofill the username/password will be a problem regardless of the format of the username. At least this way they have to guess the username AND the password. Just for an example, if there are 2 character username/passwords and you can use only lowercase letters (to keep the math easy) then there are 26*26*26*26=456,976 possible combinations. If your user name is the same as your forum name ("Ed" for example) then it becomes only 26*26 or 676 possible combinations. The more the bad guys have to guess the safer we all are cuz if they hack you they may crash me if we're on the same server.

Yeah, on my client's site is 8.9% firefox and I rarely go there to just look at it. Those statistics are like all of them - subjective at best. Besides, haw can IE get market from Firefox when they haven't done anything new for years.

Remember that we don't have people that go around policing sites checking for abuses. If it were a family we'd probably never know about it. If, however, you have 30 diverse subdomains or advertise here in the forums we'll probably find out and shut you down. The difference is that on a reseller account we plan for there to be many domains and allocate resources accordingly (namely put fewer accounts on those servers). If that was allowed on all servers we would have less-than-great service and the boss isn't willing to do that.

As long as the connections are the same type then none that I can think of. If, for example, you have a choice of internal versus external USB drive then there would be an obvious different since the bus is faster than USB.

Welcome to the forums! Remember that video running as soon as you go to a site could be considered over-the-top unless done for a good reason. Most sites, like the big news sites, have a "click here" to start the video so people, especially on slow connections, can decide to do it or not. It's also consideration for you as well because you'll need enough bandwidth in your hosting plan to cover the stream. Many sites use flash in much the same way and get fussed at for taking so long to get to the "meat" of the site. However, if it is for a good reason then that is fine and the suggestions already given will get you well on your way.

One of my clients enjoys pretty good rankings in Google for a very competitive term and they have 311 links back and more every day. You definitely need to get more. Snipe has a very well written comment above that you would do well to take to heart - at least from what I know about placement.

Of course. TCH is not so hard-hearted as to cut you off forever because of something someone else did. Of course you'd have to work with the helpdesk staff and they'd have to have evidence it was done without your consent but I just don't want anyone to be fearful that someone else (a competitor perhaps) could permanently shut them down. On the other hand, if you try to fool them and play innocent you'll get caught and then it's over!

I don't run any forums at this time so I can't help much, but for the benefit of others who do and can help, what is the package and version that you are using. I'm sure it's different for each forum program out there. Usually all of that stuff is in the setup but there can be two or more settings that need to be turned on to make certain things happen. For example, you may need to turn on "Allow file attachments" and "Allow uploads" if it's like some of the packages I've seen before. I'm sure someone has been through this before and will be along shortly that can help.
