I've been here since 03 and what Tim says is true. They definitely don't overload the servers... they keep them very light if you ask me, and they do upgrade if need be... and sometimes just to be nice. You won't have to worry about server grunge - they also monitor them all and will notice if someone is not playing nice on your server and deal with it immediately. Welcome to the forums and hopefully to the family - you'll love it here.

It seems to be dead on for my area. Also, I live on a 1 yr old street in a 1 yr old house and most satellite images don't show any of it. Even Vonage using Mapquest couldn't find my address for the 911 service. This, however, has all the houses and in good detail, which is also rare in the Keys satellite images.

Spamassassin - Where Can I Read Blocked Mails?
Deverill replied to lanys's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
The spam folder is only created if you have enabled Spam Box in cPanel. If it is disabled the spam won't go there. -
I'm not sure a third party password creator will use the exact same algorithm as the server here does. Also, the same password can be represented by a bunch of different strings the way Unix passwords are generally created. I suspect the same is true of htpasswd.

We get this kind of thing at work trying to slam our phone service. If it was a legit call from your domain registrar then they would know the name and contact info. Anytime someone calls me and wants to verify info the call is over. Of course, if I call them and they want my security code or DOB then that's different. Be careful out there - it's a jungle and crooks have no scruples!

Ultimately cPanel is to blame. They are the ones that made themes that don't work when places like TCH decide to offer more features, such as Fantastico. They don't support their own themes. Perhaps you could post a complaint in their forums/help system. While they were at it, I don't blame TCH for doing it for support reasons as well, since the other themes were broken anyway, but that wasn't their main reason. Unfortunately, TCH doesn't dictate to cPanel where to put their stuff. Actually most of the back-patting comes from the customers from what I've seen. Yeah, there are things they have to do that they would rather not, but some things are not in their control, such as cPanel's broken themes. This sticky posting explains everything and it even says that

I think they give preference to people with adwords accounts and maybe gmail. I haven't heard what the "right answers" are though. I do know I got my gmail acct quickly because I was an active adwords user back whenever that was.

I didn't say the US government. There are many other countries that are more quickly adopting it than the American gov. and one article I read says that once our gov. starts it may tip the balance and Linux usage in all areas may explode. I'm skeptical of that as well.

I don't understand why they would have to erase their 8 million entry database to implement Big Daddy. That doesn't make sense to me. There are some weird things happening to results lately though and some pretty big bungee bouncing in SERP position. Hopefully whatever the cause will get straightened out soon. Maybe, contrary to James Robertson's assertions, Mr. Orlowski was right, although guilty of sensationalism. It is a pretty fair bet that the new monster computer was bought because Google was approaching non-optimal capacity ("full"), but maybe not soon enough to avoid the bottleneck and turbulent updates we are seeing now. They are not full now, but being nearly full in Feb is still having a ripple effect on us now. Or maybe it's all just public relations magic.

That would depend on whether the blacklisting agent was using domain names or IPs. It would probably not help is my guess. I may be wrong but I believe many use both but the majority use domain names primarily. Now tell me you're not planning something nefarious.

But they are getting there. I lost my laptop harddrive and decided to just go Ubuntu and toss Windows. The only thing I have to do in a non-GUI way so far is relating to the wireless card because it's not one of the normall supported devices. It can be done but it requires some mucking about the OS. Other than that I've not had to do any config file tweaks or anything and haven't even heard that other nasty word (registry). I think it will be soon. If anyone is interested, I've been recently laid up with a herniated disc in my back so I've been doing a lot of reading and desktoplinux.com has some articles about all kinds of things. It has a bunch of linux articles such as governmental adoption of it and how to make a knock out home network and all kinds of other stuff.

I found an interesting article written by a guy who switched 95% of his computing to Linux. He still dual boots into Windows when necessary and seems to have no hidden agenda in his pretty well written intro to Linux article. If any one is interested in what the Linux fuss is and is afraid of the switch it would be a good article to read. The article. And for anyone who knows what the fuss is about but is new to the idea there are some "you can do it this way" tidbits too.

Not to disagree with you, Todd, but there are many reasons why things are announced in the forums instead of email. 1. You and I would be surprised at the number of out-of-date emails are on record here. People change emails sometimes more often than their underware so it gets behind. More than once someone has yelled "I didn't get the email" and it's been a rare case that TCH did send emails and theirs was just out of date. 2. An update has to be easy and efficient. In most cases announcements are made in forums that can be subscribed to and email notices can be sent based on that. Additionally, a thousand notices of new posting in the announcement thread is easier on the servers than a thousand emails describing the change. 3. If an email were sent to every domain then many reseller's clients would be notified that they were hosted on TCH and not Joe's Hosting which is a bad thing they try to avoid for the resellers. 4. I'm sure there are other more technical issues than I'm aware of. An email would be great in an ideal world, but there are issues with any way the announcements are made. I can assure you TCH staff hears your complaint and will do anything possible to help... if it exists and is practical.

Don't forget also that since you are on a shared server that a problem you may enjoy banging your head against might be causing another to give up on this "whole internet thing". By reporting it you may be fixing a problem for another who may not even know how to ask for help.

What is the application you need it in? Is this something that you just want to put on a web page and could use a gif file for or is it something that visitors need to be able to enter as a rendered formula?
-
Yes, the Google hosted email for your domain is a new-ish thing that you have to sign up for and they have to approve. It's in beta now. You just get them set up and then give the info from their welcome email to the TCH tech guys and they'll hook up your MX records to work with it. I've been using it for about 1.5 months and it works great.

Just remember that anything on gmail is stored for apparently a very long time and is subject to court ordered subpoena. That won't bother most people but it should be said in case it's a problem for you. Some people are very nervous about that kind of thing.

Yes, please send rain to Florida. Here in Key West, any time that we don't have enough rainwater in the storage tanks they add brackish water into our drinking water and hyperchlorinate it! Yuck! If you get a bottle and put tap water into it and let it sit overnight it will smell (and taste) like a swimming pool the next day. It's been so dry lately that they even reduced the water pressure to conserve. Next they'll be telling us which days we can wash our cars. (It's happened before!)

Cpanel Redirects And Google Page Ranking
Deverill replied to ramone_kalsaw's topic in Web Site Promotion
I've never seen the Temporary Redirect recommended unless it is truly a temporary situation (moved the site due to hurricane?) Anyway, the permanent redirect will help the search engines find your new pages but if you have a million sites pointing to your "old" address then that "credit" is wasted unless they switch to the new one - over time. Remember too my favorite mantra "Google's not the only game in town". Other search engines work differently and one should never depend on only one search engine or even one marketing method (search engines only). I have one site that gets as many hits as another and the other gets a majority from Google and that site gets tha majority of hits from Yahoo. The downside to incoming links is if anything changes it throws things sideways. I still get 401 errors in the log from pages that haven't been there for years - just because some directory out there linked directly to it. -
I don't get the timing on this. The original article says they spent $345 million on new servers and then it says the quote by the chief executive that says the machines are full and there's a machine crisis. Depending on the order of those two events it could be as bad as the "full" guy says or it could be as much a non-issue as the guy that has a personal vendetta against "full guy". Either way, there's a lot of junk on Google, as Makaveli points out. Whether the machines are full or not - they are spewing junk mixed with good stuff. What's an honest web site developer, SEO person to do? (I too get frustrated by the link to links to links problem. When I put in something I want info about it, not links to sites that may be about it.)

"Back in the day" we used AM radios tuned to no particular station to see if our computers were hung up or just slow. If they were computing they would make chirps and beeps so we knew it was working.
-
Here's an interesting article that talks about evidence that Google's servers are full and their algorithms are not doing well at filtering out junk sites bringing the whole thing to a grinding halt. Things could get interesting soon...

I'm not going to get into another Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux discussion - tired of em - but as for your second part, my situation was Windows only at work, Windows on my laptop at home and Windows and recently linux dual boot on the desktop at home. My laptop blew a hard drive - couldn't even reformat it - so I got another and started fresh. It now is sitting here as I type this with Ubuntu (Breezy) only - no Windows dual boot or anything. To answer your question, yes I would switch (did) but consider that I've been a programmer since 77 so Linux is not scary to me as it may be for beginners or folks that just want something simple.

Good point Tim. Wonder if that's why Maxthon's features have worked so long - they haven't upgraded IE in ages.
-
Tim, I'd be happy to help if I can. You could use one or all of my reseller domains as needed.
