Tim, sorry to hear about your and your puppy's ordeal! It's small consolation that they are being decent about handling it, but at least there is that. I'm glad Juneau's doing better! About allergies... wow. Should Mr. Peanut not go out because people are allergic to him? Seriously, sorry you have allergies and such, but to suggest there should be no pet owners because they are unnecessary is just a sad thing. Pets bring so much joy to so many people. The alternative is to kill every dog out there - oh, and don't forget cats - people are allergic to them too. Oh, and don't forget smokers... we gotta kill them too. See, it's just too extreme. I'm sympathize with those who have allergies, but what's the best solution? Are there any meds that can reduce/remove the problem? (Except pit bulls - they may indeed be unnecessary )

As an alternative you can just email to yourself at gmail. I use my gmail account to email myself notes at that same address all the time.

I would think that a spammer/advertiser would be willing to pay to guarantee their email will get past the spam filters. Remember, that surcharge guarantees their spam won't end up in a junk mail filter or spambox like Aunt Suzy's email did because she signed it with xxxoooxxx and the filter thought it was a XXX movie ad. It just seems to me that it will have the opposite effect of what they hope for.

Pay per email won't work... just look at the gob of junk mail I just took out of my mail box (USPS)... and they pay. The spammers will be the first to pay for guaranteed delivery. Not to mention the logistic problems that model presents.

In the middle of a CPU flood or Bandwidth flood, it makes more sense for TCH to disable the account and let the user handle the problem (and they almost always help) than to let the problem continue while they search our files for an offending script. Personally, I'd rather them keep the servers running and explore the impact of upgrades than to spend time explaining every decision they make... but that's just me

It depends. What are the files? What kind of names do they have? It's likely that they are the FrontPage extensions.

I bet if you had never seen another theme and came from a non-cPanel host you'd love whatever theme was there cPanel is a nice tool and isn't cheap for TCH to offer so my hat's off to them because I never had it so nice before here. (my comment only - not trying to say anyone else feels differently.)

That's never going to happen! I'm glad TCH, and others like them, does what they do to protect the ones not smart enough to protect themselves. How bad would these things be if these kinds of limitations weren't in place. To continue your example, if you want to drive your fast car fast then you should get a dedicated server... then you can fly, or wrap it around a tree, as you like. On a virtual/shared server it's like driving a Greyhound bus full of people at 150 on a winding mountain road -- you're likely to take a lot of us down with you if you make a mistake.

Then there are the folks that are too paranoid to share their private information (financials for ex) on a server owned by a 3rd party. Remember, these could be subpoenaed by the cops or hacked by the crooks.

Here's a page that shows how to use Javascript to refresh a page on command. Perhaps that would work?

We used FreeBSD at my last job and it was great. We had hundreds of players in a massively multi-player game and they were as solid as it gets. I wonder how it compares to Linux for home users and business servers in today's versions.

Depending on your settings, you may have issues with addressable ip addresses. Another alternative, although I don't know how expensive it is, may be gotomypc which they have been advertising the heck out of on satellite radio.

Hey gang! I have a website for my church - covenantwordchurch.org. I have built very good rankings on search engines, especially Google, and was very happy. Recently my pastor wanted to create cwckw.org as an easier way to get to it - he doesn't like typing too much I guess. As a result of this, I noticed my ranking in Google dropping and acting weird. The problem was that Google was spidering cwckw.org and all my inbound links are to the longer name. Not a good situation. I went looking for a solution and found it. I added the following code to my .htaccess which "converts" everything to the longer name. Now inbound links and the spider following internal links all match. >Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.covenantwordchurch\.org [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.covenantwordchurch.org/$1 [R=301,L] This will turn cwckw.org into www.covenantwordchurch.org anytime it is accessed. To see it in action go to the short name and look at your browser address bar - it will be redirected to the longer name. The theory, which time will prove or disprove, is that the shorter address will disappear as far as the search engines are concerned which is fine by me because it will keep all benefits at the same place and not spread my "popularity" over multiple names. Disclaimer: I didn't write this and it will take a month or two to see any results on Google. YMMV.

Unfortunately cPanel text editors are not well suited to web page editing. It will work but it's usually much easier just to edit a file on your PC and upload it with one of the free FTP programs. Good luck getting it to work for you. One thing is that when you paste it into the editor, and before you save, check to see if the characters are there. They may be getting pasted there and may even be something innocent like tabs getting interpreted by your browser, the clipboard, the cPanel editor, etc.

Part of the confusion comes from this: When Taz was talking about SSH he meant "Secure Shell" and assumed thats what you meant. SSH is basically command line access to your old server where you can type in commands straight to the operating system. You said you have SSH loaded on your computer so the SSH you speak of must be something different than the "normal" meaning of the TLA (Three Letter Acronym )

I like it and use it a lot for appointments and anything I need to remember that's date-based. I wish that they had it working for the hosted email they have because my church could greatly use a shared calendar for vacations and ministry of helps schedules but they aren't that far along yet - with Google, everything is in beta. The great thing about it is that you can access it from any computer that has a browser (all of them?). With Sunbird you either have to have it loaded or run the portable one - either way there's a program involved. The web cal is convenient. Nortk, from the help file: ICAL is pretty standard, I don't know if your program will import it though.

I don't think cjoiner wants to put (A) in the website, but rather to keep the accented A from being there at all. One possibility is that the file is being uploaded in binary. Try to find the setting to upload it in ASCII and use that and see if it helps. Sorry, I've not used FrontPage in so long I don't remember where the setting is.

I don't know if you reopened the same ticket or a new one, but when the problem is not resolved and the tech says they think it is, make sure you stay with the same ticket so the techs know it's ongoing/reoccurring.

I'm not familiar with Ruby so it may be true of that, but I'd say there are many unique products created with .NET, with which I am familiar. It is true that uninformed people are empowered to do stupid things, but does that mean we shouldn't have cars because some get drunk before driving? Actually, that's a good idea! Let's just have car parts and if your are a responsible driver you'll go to school to learn how to build your car! (j/k!) You are right that there will be a lot of problems with these types of tools, but there are also many advances because the guy that can think "out-of-the-box" can now enter the fray and put something together that shows us well-edumacated folks a new way of looking at something that we never thought of before. I have that a lot with my Pastor - he looks at the website and says "Why can't we do ...." and my reaction is "Because, duh." But then I think about it and say "why not!" and the site gets better.

Tim - Oh, THAT talk. My son doesn't live with me but if he did I think I'd rather know what he's doing so we could talk about it than to lock up the computer and have him go to his friend's house. Besides, maybe he's not doing anything and a lock-down would only show I don't trust him and cause bigger problems... it could be the OP's cache was deleted by him seeing a popup and thinking "Oh gosh, Mom's gonna think I went to that site on purpose. *Panick*". Watching his habits will let one know if there's a problem to be dealt with. Of course, either way the discussions of sexuality should be had. We don't assume, if we're smart, our kids don't smoke because we never find cigarettes so why should we assume they have their heads on straight about sex.

Remember the Gmail hosted solution is limited in number of accounts and is still in early beta testing stage. It may not be suitable for many applications. I usually start looking for scripts at hotscripts.com - perhaps with the search term webmail. The yellow/gold colored ones are commercial, which you may require, and the grey ones are free scripts. Ah, but you're a minority, Carby (not that I'm not of a similar mindset). Most people just want things to work and the quicker the better. They don't want to know how bootstrapping works, they just want the computer to come on and let them play solitare. They aren't interested in satellites and radio waves, they just want to click a button and have the TV show them football. In the world of making money, the faster you can get something working, the better. If I have to write graphics routines for my combo boxes in .NET it will take forever. If I can just drag a control then yay... I can get my better-mousetrap program out to market before the next chump can. As I said, I enjoy programming for the knowledge, but as I work longer and longer at this I'm glad to have tools to make it faster/easier when possible. Ruby on Rails is not for everyone. If you just want a blog or a website then there's no need to use it so sit back, take a sip of your iced tea and say "Ahhh, one less thing I have to worry about!" If you want to have a website that works in a unique way or differently than the packages available then you'll have to write that functionality and perhaps RoR is for you. It's certainly nice to have it available if needed.
