  1. The downside is, as Bruce said, an extra step for people to muddle through. Weigh the alternative and see if it's worth it. If you have time, which it seems you may not, make a fake/temp email account on your TCH account and throw that address in a plain mailto: on the front page of one of your most popular pages and let it sit a couple of weeks and report back to him the tens or hundreds of spams you get in that time. Right now I only have one address in plain text on the web and that's because it is in links to my client's site from other fishing directories. There's only about a dozen places it is listed and most are just text, not a mailto, but I have 3800 spams in my spam folder and they go away after 30 days. This means that I'm averaging about 127 per day and at least 90% are from that one address. My church gets only the ones that someone manually harvests. Dunno if it will help make your case but feel free to use the example and if you need anything else just PM me.
  2. Samantha, thanks for the update. It's good to know what the hangup was in case any of us see it again. "All problems stemmed from NORTON INTERNET SECURITY SUITE." Wow, I've never heard that before... Remember, anyone into computers that long, how Norton was THE BOMB! and it was the best thing going? Norton Speed Disk was an indispensible tool and their other stuff was good to ... at first. I think it was even written in assembly to be as fast and powerful as it could be. Boy, times have changed.
  3. Google does not "keep your personal information" unless you choose to use the new feature "Share across computers". The GDS itself doesn't send anything back to Google except the actual terms you are searching for. If, for instance, you have your bank account numbers in a file on your PC and use GDS and search for "bank account", the only thing sent to Google is "bank account" so that it can feed you ads. The search through your file information is all done locally. The new "share across computers" feature will store all kinds of stuff out there that shouldn't be and should be avoided like the plague. In other words, don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Unless Google goes insane and starts doing things that would be caught in a heartbeat by folks with protocol analyzers, the GDS itself is fine --- the sharing feature is what is pure evil and should never be used. Now, if your spouse walks up and types "lover" on your PC while you are sleeping then all bets are off regardless of the features you have turned on.
  4. There's a good discussion about backup media that happened in the forums recently. It may give you more insight into the dvd vs hd question.
  5. Let's try it over here in the Cpanel/Maintenance section, Ty. There should be some folks here that can help block access.
  6. I just ran across the RankQuest toolbar addin for FireFox (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1471&application=firefox). It's pretty nice for SEO stuff because it gives you a lot of tools such as back links and validation and code cleaners and link checkers and tag analyzers, etc. Please, keep in mind that these tools are of limited value and should not be taken as the absolute authority on anything. For instance, the backlink checker for Google uses the link: command which has been known to be "broken" for years. Also, keyword density has been questioned as to whether it has any value at all by some of the best SEO experts so take it all with a grain of salt. It is a good reference though and has some good info. Interesting at the very least.
  7. I'm just curious what script broke, whether it was one other customers may have or one you wrote yourself. The reason I ask is twofold. The first is so others can know it may become a problem for them and the other is to see what non-standard scripts are out there in common use. I'm no PHP pro but it seems the "normal" way to check to see if gd is loaded is to use >if(extension_loaded("gd")) Maybe you could incorporate this into your script instead of trying to parse phpinfo? Hope it helps.
  8. Welcome RobMonster... About the privacy option. I just set up one and that particular one gives you an yourdomainname.com@theirdomainname.com email address and then they forward everything to an address of your choosing. That way when the notice that your domain is about to expire comes through you actually get it.
  9. Hi Friend and welcome! I like my reseller account because it's easier to manage and I can customize my bandwidth/disk space for smaller/larger sites. That whole 200Mb, for instance, can be used as 20 X 10Mb sites or 1 100Mb and 10 X 10Mb or even 2 X 100Mb sites. That and to jump from one cPanel to the other is easier. Don't forget, your main reseller account doesn't count against that allotment. a 200Mb reseller can have 200Mb in his own site and 200Mb to split among his clients. Good to see you, happy decision making!
  10. Unless I'm misremembering - which is entirely possible - iTunes does this too.
  11. The answer is in the thread Bruce pointed to. The URL changed but just by looking at the menu you can see "Help2Go Detective" and get to the new page.
  12. If you have any links to your site from other sites that a bad-bot hits then they will come to your site. It sounds like you have a very nice trap in place to catch them though.
  13. Remember that "money" includes prizes or anything that could be considered of monetary value in most cases. Of course, I'm not a lawyer so don't take my word for it.
  14. Sorry you've had a frustrating time of it. These kinds of things can be unnerving to say the least. Before you give up on Firefox completely, consider the problem may be with Internet Explorer. Every incompatibility I've seen is because IE does it "wrong" but folks assume that it's FF's fault since they are the little guy. In fact, Wikipedia says this: The only good news I have is that IE seems to be getting closer to W3C compliance so this should be a decreasing problem in the future... although that's probably not a big comfort to you now.
  15. Does "no go" mean that you haven't gotten an answer yet, they said "sorry, it's a security risk" or that it is enabled so something else must be wrong? I'm using UFM too and it seems ok after I added the newer Ioncube files.

I don't know of any scripts, Patty, but I'm sure they are out there. Try hotscripts.com or just plain old google for some starters. Hopefully someone will be by shortly that has used one.
  17. But Rob, life is beautiful all the time in the place they take you! You're right though. A famous SEO expert has been saying for years to: Make a great site for your customer/visitor and don't sweat the search engines. There are things you can do to help rank but never design a page for an engine. They thought she was crazy at first. They're starting to doubt their initial estimation. As an example, one of my clients had 9147 unique visitors last year. Here's the breakdown of those that came from search engines: - Google (Images) 1645 - Google 1593 - Yahoo 852 - MSN 842 - AOL 135 - Ask Jeeves 42 - and a few miscellaneous others. And that's page views, not necessarily visitors! As you can see, the search engines aren't all they're cracked up to be. A good marketing plan will get you many more visitors than Google will for most normal sites. This client is a charter fishing boat captain in Florida. We have links on Alaskan fishing charters for the clients that want to go somewhere warm next year (and vice versa), in directories of fishing tours, on a taxidermy site, etc. The captain also has the URL on business cards and he tells every customer to have their friends come check him out. He also gets pictures and puts them up so when they go home they send out a bazillion emails saying "Hey, go to www.***.com and see the huge sailfish I caught!" SEO is important, and it's a fun hobby if you're into that kinda thing, but it shouldn't be the biggest advertising method and should NEVER be the only method.
  18. Interesting changes they made. I like the Quick Tabs - wish FF would implement it. I agree with you, Raul, that it will take lots of evidence for me to ever trust IE. There's already so much to the contrary already.
  19. Yeah, it's funny that way. Rob's right that keywords mean next-to-nothing nowadays for placement. Put video into Yahoo and you get "Yahoo Music Videos" at #1. MSN's not too smart though... google's video is #1 there.
  20. Sweet! Thanks for the note! I'm off to see the wizard - the wonderful wizard of Google.
  21. Thanks for the note! Remember, this clown is calling you without your request or permission to waste your time trying to sell you something you don't want. He will take your fax number and every 2-3 weeks will send you even more junk to waste your ink and paper and time -- and he will do it under the excuse that you had a business relationship with him when you gave him your fax number. I feel bad for the individuals who can not do other jobs besides this kind of thing but the position itself is dredged up from the bottom of the swamp and they are trained to be your worst enemy. I never have a problem saying "Thanks for calling - I'm not interested - bye." and hanging up. They are, after all, wasting MY time, not the other way around.
  22. Yeah, I just got into cpanel on my site with FF 1.5 so it's not an issue that FF won't work with the badly formed page. Besides, if FF balked at no Doctype then 80% of the web pages out there would fail Has anyone from the Help Desk tried to get into your cpanel with your password and FF? It seems that since a lot of us use FF and can access cpanel, and... you tried 2 different isp's and... you have problems on different machines and... you have problems on different browsers... THEN it may be something wrong in the setup of the account/cpanel itself. I say this in all humility because our tech support folks here are the best I've seen, but sometimes things can get flakey and there's no good answer for it.
  23. Gmail does great for me. It keeps 30 days of spam and in that 30 days I have 3364 spams. Of course about 8-12 stock/investing/microcap spams get through - that's the Gmail boggle right now. They are having a hard time identifying it all the time.
  24. TCH doesn't offer Fantastico so keep that in mind when making your plans.
  25. Aha! as they say. If you can get in fine with IE and not with Firefox I'd like to suggest that it's a problem with FF. It could be a bad install or a plugin that is not behaving, or a setting not right. In one (and only one) of my systems, if I go to the main page with FF the menus at tho top won't show up. I haven't figured out what it is that's causing it but IE works fine so if I need to do it on that machine I can.... just with a little pain. If this turns out to be the case then there's probably nothing the tech support guys can do here, but please do let them know this in the helpdesk ticket you have open.
