  1. I don't know the specific reason the techs disabled Curl, but just a quick glance on the net shows a security vulnerability from just a couple of weeks ago. Another from last June says "multiple security vulnerabilities were discovered in cURL". They seem to be fast to update/patch it, but I'm glad it's not on my neighbor's sites. I guess any program that transfers files that's not as "mature" as the standards is at great risk. About the statement that if a host doesn't do cURL it's not worth having -- what about programs that use such risky tools that can compromise the entire site being allowed to run and the sites that allow them?
  2. Get well soon, amigo. It's no fun being sick.
  3. Not a choose one - it was A or B and in boolean logic if either A is true or B is true then the answer is true. You gotta be more specific when you ask questions.
  4. Welcome! Level 1 and Level 2 tech. Does that make you a Level 3 tech? It's a pleasure to have you on the team, Carl.
  5. There was an interesting article in Wired yesterday about it. Apparently, starting this year, all of Indiana is doing the same thing, even the counties that did it illegally so they could keep doing business with their neighbors. Oh yeah, next year, it's going to be the 2nd week of March. I just wish they'd leave it alone.
  6. Nope, never played WOW but I am hooked on City of Heroes / City of Villains. Love that game!
  7. What header tags do you mean? Of course the <TITLE> tag will make a difference in your search engine placement. But regardless of that, it won't change PR because Google's PR value is based solely on how many links are to your page and how impressive (well linked) each of the those pages happens to be.
  8. A changing quote won't really have any significant effect on the search engines and how they rank your page.
  9. The "colored scrolly thingy" is something unique to IE. It is not part of any standard and will not work on any other browser I know of. It's something they added, a gimick if you will, to get people to put all that work into their websites for aesthetics and then add a note "Best viewed in IE" so they can sucker more people into using IE.
  10. Hi Bill... Great start but you must know that your journey will not be an easy one. All your old friends will tell you that you must go back, that you are not... compatible any more. You must cut yourself off from those who would have you revert back to your old ways telling you "You must use IE 6 or higher to access this site". Let them know that you have turned over a new leaf in life and you are not going back!
  11. Congrats Rob! You couldn't find a better guy to work for!
  12. Tim has a good point. The install scripts all have well known names. It's very important any time we install a script that we follow the instructions carefully. One script I recently used said "When you finish, remove the install.php script or " you could get hacked. Phishing for known filenames is not that uncommon.
  13. I knew that. I was just thinking about how the "public" would respond to a comment that the plane software was rebooted. Of course the nav and other critical systems aren't tied to the entertainment system -- it wouldn't be very entertaining to the passengers to crash the plane
  14. <sigh> Yay Microsoft! Thanks BoB
  15. Yep, the bickering is a cross between annoying and amusing. I can see the headlines: "The airliner that crashed in the field yesterday afternoon was the victim of terrorism. Charges are being written up for Linux "Tux" Penguin today and will be served shortly. It seems that a flaw in the operating system, combined with a rookie co-pilot issuing the three finger salute, resulted in the plane being rebooted in mid-air. The rest is just gravity folks."
  16. Congrats guys! Welcome to your new home, little Cooper, and enjoy your trip around the sun! It's gonna be a blast!
  17. Aww, come on guys. It's for her kid's website! It's supposed to be fun! Live a little and let some silliness in once in awhile! {I'm just funnin you guys. } Mouse trails are terrible for a serious site but for a kids site they can be fun. Annoying to adults? Of course. Fun for kids? Probably. Give the link Dick gave you a try and if you have any problems just stop back and we'll see what we can do to help.
  18. Agreed, Jim. There's just something depressing about pulling into the driveway after a day of work and it being pitch black outside. At least with the sun still up you feel like you haven't wasted your whole day at the office.
  19. That's not messy --- that's nasty. Eek!
  20. But do they use them in ranking decisions? Just as an experiment (proving nothing by the way) I put in "Key West Fishing" and #2 and #3 had no meta keyword or desc tags. I just wonder if they play a role and if so how much.
  21. Right! I don't agree that it necessarily shows good or bad linking. PR has always been questionable since no one can say with certainty what it really shows. Besides, I've seen PR0 and PR1 sites at the top of a search engine result page. Other tools are also useful. I use digitalpoint.com which has some good free tools for things like how many links do you have to your site or search engine rank for certain keywords. Bottom line, PR means nothing of use. It might give trending but can we rely on it? I dunno. By the way, welcome to the forums and family airfarenow.
  22. Unfortunately you can't totally remove IE. Click My Computer and in the Address bar put www.google.com and there you are. IMO, that's the problem with Windows - everything is so integrated that the web pages can access the OS through hooks and stuff. One bug and boom, your whole computer can be at their mercy. With compartmentalized apps there is no problem... in Unix the web browser can't take over the OS essentials unless something was done horribly wrong and probably on purpose to compromise that one system (like a hacked shell command or something).
  23. Lucky you. I had to get a special dispensation from above to run XP on my desktop at work and the rest of the company is all on Windows 2000 - except the few on Windows 98. Isn't it funny that when the computer "boss" doesn't know something he's usually totally against going to it because it's not stable enough!?! We could do more to keep my users at work from hurting themselves with XP. <sigh>
  24. Hi everyone, Background: My Pastor asked me to set up a small network of emails for our church staff. Problem: On only one computer at church we kept getting PHP errors from Squirrel Mail. Horde failed almost every time too. I knew it wasn't on TCHs end because it worked from other computers at our church. Answer: I did some research and found that Google Accelerator will cause this problem. The reason was that the prefetch was, in essence, clicking crazy links at the wrong times. In fact, I also read that since the prefetch looks at your mouse location, you could accidentally "click" on "Delete Message" just by having your mouse in the wrong spot and your mail is gone! One of the guys in the technology team loaded it to speed things up. It is not worth it! Google Accel said it saved us about 5 mins in over a month so it's no help to speak of. I just wanted to let anyone considering or using Google Accelerator know the problems it caused me just in case you start seeing weird stuff.
  25. Last I knew, it varied from state to state. For instance, the state I was in only required ONE party to know about the recording. Guess it was to stop the illegal cop taps and the jealous husband types.
