Have you tried clearing your browser cache? Getting in without a password sounds like some caching is going on and it may be inconsistent.

Nope, not me. Three reasons: 1. I'm using Linux more and there is a free program named Screem that does a good job of web editing. 2. I'm doing a LOT more with CSS now so it's easier to edit straight html by hand without all those pesky tags in the way and I know how to do it so it makes sense. 3. I'd not pay that much for an upgrade with the company being bought by Adobe until I see what they do with it -- even if I was going to go forward with it. I am looking forward to "version 9"

movie - oh wait, that's not what HG meant when he said the first word that pops into my head.. uhm... POPCORN!

Have you had any success in verifying that your awstats is accurately reflecting your true log file? If so, awstats can be a big help in seeing where the bandwidth is going. In one of my sites, almost half of my monthly bandwidth was eaten by MSNBot.

While you are at it, see if Afrihost will change the contact fields to your info so in the future you won't have to go through them to change things.

Flashback! Aieeee! That was me until I started Taekwondo in college. I don't remember the last time I fell - except practicing takedowns in self defense

Welcome Esoos! Thanks for the comments - it's always good to have another input, especially one as qualified as yours. Most of us are just guessing, albeit educated guessing, at SEO and it's great that you took the time to post to let us know we are on the right track. Also, thanks for the note about the book - I hadn't read anything about it and didn't realize it's an ebook. I'll have to check that out.

By the way, Gimp is nearly (?) as powerful as Photoshop but is free to use!

That's great news! So many hosts try to scam people by doing that little trick - I'm glad you can do what you want with your domain. BTW, welcome to the forums and nice website!

Your submit file tries to run the script at www.kaulaiscool.com/scgi-bin/links.cgi It seems that file does not exist. Do you really have an scgi-bin directory - most use just cgi-bin and it may be a typo.

Paultwang posted some helpful links to free encryption software this morning... just in case you missed the topic. If you encrypt it with a good secure encryption first then it really doesn't matter if anyone does happen to get it - although the servers are as secure as it is practical to make them.

If you deleted yourself from cPanel then a helpdesk ticket may be in order. Moving topic to CPanel and Site Maintenance forum for better visibility.
-
Awstats should reflect your raw logs. I'd submit a helpdesk ticket with all the details if it is not.

I'm not the best at reading whois entries, especially international ones, but it looks like your host is also the owner of the domain name. Some hosts do that to prevent people from leaving. If someone more knowledgable than I wants to have a go at it, the record can be seen at whois.co.za/cgi-bin/whois.sh?Domain=freegrace&Enter=Enter (mentioned because my normal resources don't do .co.za sites) If your current host uses cPanel then you can submit a ticket to the helpdesk after creating your account and they can try to copy your site over to here for you. It's not guaranteed but usually goes well. If you are thinking about creating other web sites then don't forget the reseller packages. They start a tiny bit more expensive but you can host as many sites as you like, limited of course to the bandwidth and disk storage space of your account. It's much more convenient to manage them and you can switch to a reseller account at any time.

You are absolutely right, but it's nice to choose a media today that will hold the data until you do copy it to the latest greatest media 5 years from now.

Leigh, thanks for that info. It's pretty impressive how MO drives work and I'd not even heard of them before. Good stuff!!!
-
They are not totally useless as many search engines use them to help decide what the site's about and for the blurb they provide sometimes. They are not as important now when a search engine tries to determine your placement among other sites like yours. You should use them - who knows, maybe they will become important again or some smaller search engine will still use them and drive traffic to your site. Every little bit helps - just don't obsess over them.

You can use Windows search feature if you are in fact using Windows. Just go to (these are XP directions but others should be able to do it) Start - Search - Files and Folders - and look for the text box that says "containing the text" and put your string in there.

I saw a recent study results (either techdirt, wired or slashdot) that says the user-burned CD's typically last 2-5 years before the everyday heat and such causes it to corrupt. The commercial ones last much longer because of the quality of the CD and the process by which they are made. Not exactly what you asked, but I'd personally stay with what the article said was more reliable - magnetic media. It sure was an eye opener to me as I sit and look at 3 year old inventory CD's for my company.

I saw a shareware program once, years ago, that stored one entry in the registry relating to notepad which it used to identify that it had, indeed, been installed so people couldn't cheat it. With this I would assume that notepad is a more-or-less permanent part of Windows and that's why they chose that particular identification method. "Kinda clever," I thought at the time but with tools available today, it is less effective than other methods.

Bruce's method is also good in that as the domain name change propogates and some people, for a brief time, go to the old site and some to the new, they will both see sites instead of the typical "Under construction" or "coming soon" pages. Once you tell your registrar to switch your DNS to the new site here you may want to put a note on the old site that posts there won't show up at the new site so anyone that does get sent to the old site during the transition will not "lose" their post. Make sense?

CSS would work and most browsers are compliant, or nearly so, making it a good choice. The best thing to do is grab a book or visit some web sites that will get you up to speed with it. It's a bit strange at first (or was for me) but once you start understanding it, the whole thing makes sense.

Although I suspect spiders may revisit more often if content changes frequently, it's not necessary to get them to come to your site to index it. Googlebot has hit me 78+ times so far this month on a site that's not changed in probably 2 years. The latest visit was 4:44 yesterday.
