  1. Of course you do, but remember that most folks that frequent the forums and the Forum Moderators do not have access to your account information and a followup to the helpdesk is best for those kinds of things. Besides, if anything bad happened you could discuss it in private with them... but mostly because we don't have access to the accounts.
  2. Welcome to the forum, Vic. If someone wanted that kind of protection I guess they could go to AOL - that fast talking guy on TV seems to have everything protected for their users. They let you have a small web site too. Of course, if you want a real site then here's the place - great features, prices, uptime, support, etc. but TCH does require us to either ride the bicycle like a big kid or bring our own training wheels... they don't set up blogs or do virus checking or setup our FrontPage settings on our PC or stop spyware or phishing or any of the other things. Bottom line for me is that I'd rather them be the best web host as they are than be a mediocre AOL product. Besides, they aren't planning on offering it so it becomes a moot discussion anyway. There are many reasons to or not to offer a product or feature and I'm sure the cost is not the only issue in this case. Again, jack of all trades and master of none or the best webhost we could ever find? I prefer the latter.
  3. Congrats Raj! How long does this separation last in your customs? I hope you won't be apart too long... I'll bet you're really wanting to be with them! Aren't babies just awesome!!!!
  4. gz is a file compressed with the gzip format. There are programs that will read it that you can get for free from sites like download.com for instance. I use WinRAR which reads gz files. Googlebot is a touchy friend/enemy. If you block it then they will think your site is gone and eventually remove your listing - not good. If you leave it alone it may eat your bandwidth - also not good. You could try a robots.txt file to restrict it from certain directories but depending on your site that may also not be good.
  5. The single best thing you can do for yourself and your client is to learn as much as you can about SEO from reputable forums, etc. If you talk to them and they are scum then they can sweet talk and blow smoke up your bloomers and you may not be able to tell. With a basic understanding of true SEO you can spot a scammer quickly. Fast results without paid placement? *click* Keyword spamming? *click* Doorway pages? *click* Just don't go in blind or they'll rip you off. Assume scammer and make them prove they're not. I'm NOT trying to bad-mouth SEO experts or companies. There are good ones everywhere, but the bad ones far surpass their goodness by how scummy they can be and how unfeeling they are about taking every penny they can.
  6. Sorry I don't have any experience with that program. Usually those kinds of programs will dump an entire folder of the html file and photo files. As for personal information, I highly doubt that anything will be sent that you didn't tell the program, such as name, and maybe not even that. When you post a page you can use your browser's "View Source" feature to see what it sends -- most likely anything there would be at the top of that page.
  7. Doesn't that depend on how many you pump into someone? Besides, I'd think it's better than something that would depressurize the compartment by going through the person and the window. Seriously, I heard that the air marshals have special bullets that immediately pancake inside the target so that doesn't happen... dunno if they're .22's or not... but that sounds like it would do massive damage to organs if it doesn't hit bone first.
  8. Doing a Google search on "entropy search limiting" I found several hosts with what looks like canned Cpanel text that says the following: Sorry it's not good news.
  9. I've never used it so I can't help there. It does require shell access to install which is available only to the techs who would have to install it for you. You may want to submit a helpdesk ticket and just ask if it's an option, but I doubt TCH would like little programs running around the system outside what they already have. If you do that then make sure you post back here with their yea or nay so we all know.
  10. Too bad it's about as reliable as a $2.00 handgun. There are MANY factors that will affect the results of this guy's test. A couple are: 1. Google's duplicate content filters lowering the value of the 2nd site as a duplicate. 2. Google's tendency to delay highly ranking sites as they "settle" into their place among the valuable. It's a totally unrealistic test. Interesting, but unfair to Google as well.
  11. Check the link - it does pop pictures (icons more precisely).
  12. You can do it with CSS also. Eric Meyer has a bit about it on his site. (The menu on the left is a working example.)
  13. Don't forget to check their help (F1) and forums too... being fairly new it's got some cool features that are not immediately obvious like a wildcard search feature.
  14. Y'know, here's one benefit to Linux. You go to a site, download the OS, install it and you're done. With MS Windows you get out your CD, install the OS, then spend the next 2 days doing the "Update-reboot-repeat" cycle to get all the patches. There's gotta be a bazillion of them and half need a reboot before you can proceed. Really annoying in IT departments like ours. I wish I could convince them to go Linux!
  15. An (I think) interesting aside, the Tele-Zapper works by playing three tones at the beginning of every incoming phone call. You know them... they are the "do-do-dee" you hear right before "The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer available." message. The silly computer dialers assume it's a disconnected number and take it off the list.... at least they used to - I don't know if they've gotten smarter yet. Another thing you can try is that my previous phone provider, BellSouth, had a service called Privacy Director. If a call comes in as "unidentified", "private" or "unknown" on the caller ID, the phone company intercepts it before ringing your home and plays a message that goes along the lines of "Go away bozo, if you're legit then say your name, if not, go away." Then if they leave a name it rings and you hear "This bozo <Capital One> wants to talk to you. Press 1 for OK, 2 to say no nicely or 3 to hang up" The predictive dialing computers can't handle it at all and sales slugs won't bother so your phone rarely rings unless it's your friends. Pretty cool actually. *No offense to people in the sales business. You are necessary and I bear no grudge against you, just the way businesses force you to produce and be persistent which is a pain in my butt. The last thing I need when I tell AOL I want to cancel is 500 questions about why and a 10 minute monologue telling me why I'm stupid to cancel for that reason.
  16. Welcome samstone. That sounds like something that, if it can be done, would have to be done on the "backend" of your account. You may try submitting a helpdesk ticket and ask them if there's a way... if there is it would probably take a tech to do it for you.

  18. The Help Site has instructions on how to set up some of the popular email programs which you can use to read your TCH Webmail on your PC via POP3. Email Client Setup If you need any further help come back here and post and someone will probably be able to help you out.
  19. Hey Family! I found a program I think is great that I wanted to share with everyone. If you ever keep notes laying around on scraps of paper or in a bazillion little text files on the hard drive then you may be interested. EverNote is a program they describe as: It lets you create notes and store them on their digital roll of paper, categorize notes, digitally search for any text within. You can also cut and paste from the clipboard and even highlight a section of a web page and click on a button it adds to your browser (IE and FireFox) and it will save that portion as a note with a link to the URL source! This program is really nice and actively developed so expect more from it as time goes by. The basic version is free. The version that handles "ink" (handwriting/drawing on tablets) is for a small fee. If anyone gets it and finds it useful make sure you post here to let us know what it's doing for you. I'm using it to save the cost of post-it's, store information I want later and to keep a set of pat-answers for forums and work issues where the same answer is given over and over again.
  20. Bill, is the special project the notice about the change in backups or is there yet another great announcement (YAGA) on the way?
  21. "FTP Server" may also be used to refer to the program that sits on the computer Rob is talking about and talks to the FTP Client when it connects. It just sits and listens for someone to talk to it, verifies password information, and "serves" files to the client when you ask nicely (with the right passwords).
  22. You should be able to get some POP script to do that. I'd check the script sites. Here's a perl script that does web based pop email - maybe it can be a starting place for you?
  23. Geek! I guess even hardware has it's fans. Personally, I'm a software kinda guy.
  24. Sorry to seem dense, but want to be sure I understand it. Considering the discussion of deleted files, this form of backup will allow you to replace our entire site if it blows up but if we delete a file and want it back 7-14-50 days later then we are out of luck? Just asking because it may affect how we do backups... being a little more coreful of that delete button. In all seriousness, if this is how it works then we'll have to actually keep our own backups if we want historical information... not a bad thing but just something to know. By the way, you guys rock!
  25. Just go to Tools - Extensions and then click on Get More Extensions. That will take you to a web page where you can see most if not all FF extensions and you can choose to see them by popular, highest rated, etc. One of my favs is ForecastFox - it gives you a little weather summary in the corner - popup conditions, forecast, radar... kinda nifty.
