  2. From the 'Just thought you'd like to know' department: Besides hanging out here in the TCH forum, I spend a considerable amount of time in several specific Microsoft newsgroups, especially the one for the Microsoft Small Business (SBS) 2000 Server. Anyhow, last week on the SBS2000 newsgroup, someone was asking for a good, cheap web provider, and I casually mentioned that I use TCH. OK, I actually used a 2x4 to get their attention, but I was nice about it. Well, since then several people on that newsgroup apparently have checked out TCH upon my suggestion, and have had favorable comments about it and have suggested it themselves in their replies to other message threads! So, if you think that TCH is doing something unique in the service they provide, in their product offerings, their support, and in the way they treat their customers ... You're right! :-) kw
  3. I've never (knock on wood) had to do a system restore. One advantage with Windows XP is that you can now *undo* a driver that you just installed that doesn't work. Why? Because I never rely on using Windows Update to update drivers! I did one time, during a huge memory loss - mine! It was a driver to update a wireless NIC card. I should have known it was worng when Microsoft reported the vendor as 'Generic' - instead of 'Linksys'. Well after installing the update, the wireless NIC wouldn't work. Fortunately, I could go back and select to "roll back" to the previous driver. -kw

    Ispell

If you want it, you would have to install it yourself. They provide a tar.gz file for you to download, and then upload to your TCH web site. Then simply use your CPanels' File Manager to unpack and install the tar.gz file. One warning, though --- it looks like the latest version of ISpell is dated Aug-2001, or almost two years old. Does not look like there's much, if any, technical support for the product. I suppose I'm impressed that they ported it to the Commodore Amiga. Are you sure this is something you want??? Who recommended it to you? -kw
  5. Either you have not correctly explained your set up - or -y ou have something wrong. If you access your TCH site via FTP (or CPanel's File manager), you should see several directory, including: mail/ public_ftp/ public_html/ tmp/ www/ The www/ directory is really a fake directory, and actualy points to the public_html/ directory. Think of it as an alias. Now, all your actual web pages should be inside the public_html directory. Your URL (www.illuminationlighting.net) is directed to the proper TCH name servers (ns1.totalchoicehosting.com and ns2.totalchoicehosting.com). What happens when someone types in www.illuminationlighting.net ? Well, first the browser goes out and determines that your URL exists physically at TCH, and so your visitor will be sent there. Furthermore, TCH is set up to automatically take the visitor to the public_html directory and locate/display the appropriate home page (index.htm, index.html, index.php, etc.) Again, if your set up is not this way, or you have something missing, it would be best to contact TCH's supportdesk and get it fixed NOW - rather than after you go live with your web site. -kw
  6. You're welcome! kw
  7. Yes, stranger - but glad to hear it's working! -kw
  8. This is a bit off the normal course of topics, but assuming that many of us do use Microsoft Windows on our home or business PC's -- recently there has beena flood of postings at various Microsoft newsgroups with people having problems with Windows Update. In some cases, the update they try to select doesn't install at all. In other cases, after installing an update, if you rerun Windows Update, it will report that the update needs to be installed, as if you had not installed it. Here are some Microsoft links on this subject: Windows Update Site Lists Updates That You Already Installed Windows Update Troubleshooter Guide Software Update Incomplete, This Windows Update Software Did Not Update Successfully" Error Message HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog -kw
  9. I use AdShield (www.adshield.org) and haven't seen a pop-up on my screen in over a year! -kw
  10. Yep, sounds like a good reason to me why TCH doesn't support or allow it. -kw
  11. P.S. -- I've re-edited Ian's comments slightly and posted it to the TCH Help site -- click here. If someone has further info or corrections to this topic, please let us know! -kw
  12. Ian, thanks for the tip on checking the log files. Not sure I would ahve thought of that one. -kw
  13. You may also be interested in a 3rd party web site that allows you to view email from multiple web sites via your browser. It's called Mail2Web - click here to learn more about it! -kw
  14. Just a guess .. but I would suspect the reason it does not work is that /403.html is saying to go to your root directory to find the file 403.html -- but obviously it is not finding the '403.html' file there. Remember that your web site is actually located at: /home/{username}/public_html This is is usually referred to as your document root. So, if you really want to reference your error file as /403.html -- you're going to have to move it up to your /home directory -- or change your .htaccess file to read: ErrorDocument 403 /home/{username}/public_html/403.html Does that make any sense? kw
  15. Good work, Rick - I've added your suggestion to the TCH Help web site - click here! -kw
  16. Can someone explain something to me? I thought a proxy server was used to protect and filter requests from a person inside a company LAN to a web server outside. Why would someone want to use TCH as a proxy server? -kw
  17. Thanks! -kw
  18. Thanks for the kind words! One small step towards making this a better world to live in! :-) kw
  19. I had someone contact me about topsites.us for submitting to search engines - I told them it was a scam. Can someone verify my feelings?? -kw
  20. A user on the Globalscape's CuteSITE Builder forum asked the following question: My question is: will Google and the other search engines actually review the contents of a PDF file itself, or simply pick up the keywords and descriptions associated with the HTML page where the link to the PDF file is? Or some other idea or suggestion? Thanks, kw
  21. Aaah ... I had installed SquirrelMail manually a few months back -- forgot that if it's installed standard on the servers, installation of plugins might be affected. Truthfully, I don't know the answer ... -kw
  22. I asked the same querstion awhile back - and it appeared that using procmail might be the solution, but now I don't remember the actual resolution ... -kw
  23. Stefan .. re: SquirrelMail plugins -- most of the plugins are tar.gz files. You DO NOT need shell access to install. The cPanel's File Manager allows you to unzip and install a tar.gz file! -kw
  24. The TCH Help Web site has been updated to reflect the fact that SquirrelMail is now a standard product for all TCH servers. I've also provided a link to instructions for creating anb embedded login script to access SquirrelMail. -kw
