  1. Lately I have noticed a pattern emerging from Google. Let's play a game shall we? Pretend for a moment that you are a consumer, not a web site owner. Go to Google and type in "Kodak camera" Wouldn't you think that Kodak's own home page should be sitting at the top of the list? Well it isn't. How is it that Google can find three other sites that it thinks is more 'relevant' or 'higher ranking' than Kodak's site? Notice that Kodak gets the 3rd spot in that result list, unless you count the PAID sponsor link at the top (which I never look at anyway). Ok, let's try again. Type in "belkin router" (not that I would want one, but maybe I need some support for the one that I have). Result? Belkin's page is listed dead last on the first page! Now if you type in "belkin routers" (plural) it gets even worse with Belkin being eliminated from the first page altogether finally to appear as #2 on the THIRD page. However, if you only type in Belkin, you get their home page immediately on top. Now, am I missing something? Seems like until recently, the results were much more appropriate to the search I was actually looking for. How do bizrate, homenethelp and news.com outrank Belkin for "Belkin router"? Don't get me wrong, I love google, but this is wearing me out.
  2. Hey Jack!
  3. All good things will come to those who are patient! Thanks for the update. This might be a little clue for an issue that my Dad's pc has been having for quite sometime. I think that I might delve into it a bit now.
  4. *YAY* Glad you found a solution and thanks for the tip!
  5. No luck getting webcalng installed. I know that I'm probably missing something pretty basic...like command line interface I followed the directions for FTP only access install and still no go. Sorry. Have you looked to see if you provider has an online calendar yet?
  6. http://www.agoracart.com/help/ Try there! Official home of Agora Cart
  7. Been holding my breath through this one, but here goes: I have a Linksys WRT54G and wireless card for the laptop...It absolutely blows away the 'b' system that I have setup at home. There I'm using a Linksys BEFSR41 and D-Link Access Point. I also have several clients with various configurations. My findings: 1. If you go wireless, go G. 2. If you go wireless, go with it built in to the router (easier, more convenient to configure). 3. If you go wireless, secure it!!!! Mine are locked down to a. No broadcast (so HG won't see it driving by) b. Enable WEP - encrypted transmissions c. Utilize the Allow/Block MAC Filters. I have each of mine set to only allow access/communications with MY pcmcia card. I also agree with HG, software firewalls are for the birds if you have good hardware in the stream and it's configured correctly. My two, well ok, three cents.
  8. Sorry for the late reply on this, but here's another alternative for preserving the ownership of your site. Not completely fool-proof, as nothing really is, but it will certain stop the majority of theives: http://htmlscrambler.com This is a free service.
  9. I tried a couple with my Pocket PC, but not with a phone or Palm platform. I've dropped that suggestion to the Trillian guys (gals, whatever), but haven't heard anything or seen any feedback on the suggestion. Would be interested to see what you come up with though, especially for a web enabled mobile phone.

Please forgive my ignorance of FrontPage, but is there a different insertion method used for animated gifs and static gifs? Reason I ask: The software that I use to create most of my webpages has a special Insert option for Animated images. If I insert using the Insert > Image, then I get a static (single frame) image. If I insert using Insert > Animated image, then I get the animation. Just a thought....
  11. Dennis, Sorry, still not coming up with anything affordable. By that I mean, there are some custom programs out there for sale, but in the thousands. (Figuring since you asked for freeware, that was a little off your mark.) Lianna
  12. I agree with Mike. There should be a definitive scope letter that would include specifics of the project, expectations of both parties, payment terms and recourse. That should be signed by both parties and copied to each PRIOR to payment or work starting. Not unusual to be asked for some funds upfront, but 70 of 99 would have thrown a bell or two in my ear. Red flags are usually best observed from your GUT not your eyes! If it doesn't feel right, don't do it. My personal two cents, not necessarily the views of TCH or it's staff.
  13. oooh, there's a good alternative!
  14. HG - Hey! I'm way too young to be SOME of you guys' Mom! Like I'm on that downhill slide or something? Geesh! Dennis - nope, been there, done that, done with that! Thanks for the compliment though. The avatar is courtesy of TCH-Don and I like very much too.
  15. YAY!!! Thumbs Up
  16. From the Server Installation Instructions for SafeTP: Not on a virtual hosting machine. You may make a help desk request to have this feature added, but I'm not going to give good odds on it. Can anyone else throw in an idea of how to securely do as alexfung is suggesting?
  17. That's a pretty sticky question. To use the Manage MySQL and phpMyAdmin functions requires cPanel access. If this is a temporary thing, then you can easily change cPanel passwords immediately after the access is no longer needed. ??? I can use MyODBC to interface a MySQL db using MSAccess, but that gets kinda tricky and I still find myself having to access phpMyAdmin for table structure stuff. Anyone else got ideas here?
  18. Trillian is a messenger client that allows connectivity to MSN, Y!, AIM, ICQ, IRC simultaneously. You must have an account with each service that you intend to connect to using Trillian, but it puts them all into one sleek little interface. There is a free version and paid version. You can learn more about it at http://ceruleanstudios.com . I use Trillian Pro 2.0 so that I can be connected to Y, MSN, AIM simultaneously through a single interface. It's dandy.
  19. From the EFTP site: So, the quick answer, without having tried this application is: In non-encrypted mode, YES. In "most secure level of data transfer", NO. Now, I just downloaded and installed and scanned through all of the documentation that I could find. The Server application appears to be for only Windows based servers....I could be wrong, but it seems that this app is best used for creating an FTP server out of your own machine and then making it securely accessible to web users. So, the long answer, No. Hope that helps, but please correct me if you know something else of this application.
  20. 1. Have you changed the name servers for your domain to TCH yet? If not then you will need to do that and then wait 24-72 hours for propagation before you will be able to use the domain name to access your site (http or via ftp). If so, 2. Can you access your site on TCH servers via the domain name (ie: http://mysitename.com)? If not, then propagation is probably not complete, just be patient. If so, 3. Can you access via ftp using the IP address that was given to you in your welcome e-mail? In your ftp client, just enter the number for the host address, such as 111.123.11.12 Let me know some more specifics and I can help you out better.
  21. My choices are CuteHTML and CuteFTP. Super easy, but not free. You can look more at http://globalscape.com Try Notepad. Yup, the plain jane version that comes with Windows. Then just use file manager in cPanel to FTP the file and replace the old.
  22. Bohemotash, If you'd like to PM me with the domain names, then I'll gladly look at the registry entries to see how they are currently listed and see if there will be any foreseeable issues with the transfer. Normally, with most credible hosts, the domains that they register are listed with YOU as the Registrant. And I've seen some that will list themselves as the Administrative Contact. That means that YOU truly own the domain name, but that they have control over it. The Administrative Contact email address is the really critical piece. It sounds as though Dot5 is being cooperative though and you should have no problems. Welcome home!
