  1. As most others have mentioned...googled. We came out with a large selection and narrowed it down to 3 companies. We turned the pages over shuffled them and picked TCH. So far it seems the better company did win.
  2. Thanks Bruce. [deletes old version from toolbox...adds new]
  3. Try this and see if the problem is corrected. In Display Properties remove the desktop image you have selected and change it to "none". Then change the video resolution and reboot. Maybe the desktop image is to large and this is whats resetting the resolution.
  4. Do you have the latest Service Pack (SP2) and are the current patches installed?
  5. To change the resolution, right-click on the desktop (blank area) and select PROPERTIES from the list. Click the SETTINGS tab and select the resolution and color quality you need.
  6. When I first read this thread earlier this morning my initial reaction was whats wrong with 40% CPU usage, for some folks this is the low end and is not an issue. I was going to reply but got distracted and had to leave. Now returning I see you are having other difficulties and this maybe the route of your problem. A CPU running at 40% or even 60% is not a bad thing and should not cause a system "slowdown". Once you get over 80% there will be a need to be concerned but the system should still run fine. A bad spot or spots are a better explanation for a system slowdown. When one is reached the system tries over and over again to read the drive until it gets past the error and this will look like a system slowdown. The computer processes things in order and if it can't complete a request (read disk) it does not complete other task behind it. So first thing to concentrate on is the hard drive problem. It will ether need to be corrected or replaced. Once the hard drive is working correctly you can revisit the CPU/slowdown, but I have a feeling it will be corrected by the harddrive being fixed.
  7. Wow, I found my next monitor. I clicked a link on the right side and ended up at a site with kewl stuff. h_tp://www.hammacher.com/publish/10244.asp?promo=el_computer
  8. No thanks, sending an electrical charge thru a metal pipe with gas flowing thru it just doesn't sound right. And I really don't want the hackers to see what I am cooking for dinner
  9. After sitting on the steps for opening day Spiderman I'll never go opening day again...I'll wait to see it next week Oh yeah, a friend saw it and said it was better then II...have fun!
  10. You can actually run any executable "program" from the "Run" or command window. As long as you give the full path it will startup just like you clicked an icon. And there are lots of "executables" besides the .exe and .com files. The .msc and .cpl, .pif are others... Do a search for them and try some out.
  11. Well Raul, alls I can say is I take reports like these from a "security" company who's main income comes from products that protect you from these exploits with a grain of salt. Its similar to the "reports" made by Virus companies when a new one is discovered in the wild...and they direct you straight to their web page where they sell you their product. I clicked on your link to eEye and was immediatly given popups to purchase or try a free trial . As for being susceptable for a long period, thats not as long as it appears. eEye has a bunch of programers with their sole job being to uncover these bugs/vulnerabilities/security holes, once found they "report" them to Microsoft (and the press for free publicity) to be addressed. The only ones at this point who know where and how to use the exploit is eEye and Mickeysoft. It will take time (if ever) for someone else to find it...so when is the clock started for this "long period"? If there is no working exploit out "in the wild", what am I worried about? Now I do agree that is does take a lot of time for MS to correct these thing. I just don't like the scare tactics or ethics companies use to sell their product. Just wait till the user base for browsers balances and these companies start closely examining the other browsers code.
  12. I thought it was live an invites were no longer needed.
  13. They said Part of what the sober virus does is to send emails "from" the infected PC. The virus creates these email and most of the time they are false names placed in the TO: field and in the From: field, so people will receive returned emails because they could not be delivered... You are not infected, someone else is. We all receive these types of emails and we never sent them, nor are we infected. Alls we can do is weather the storm and hope the infection is discovered and cleaned.
  14. Have you tried the support forums for SBC over on dslreports...you may get better results there. h_tp://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,swbell Have you reset your modem? Also try and power down the router if you have one and reboot the computer. Try those and see if it helps.
  15. You are getting the newest variant of the original sober virus, which makes sense. The virus scanners are normally behind the virus writers and it takes several days to catch up. Actually all thats needed is to "execute" the file. It comes in a self-extracting zip, so it will unzip itself and then execute itself.
  16. My first attempt at a website was with frames, at the time it was the only way I could accomplish the way I wanted all the pages to work. I spent a lot of time working on the design and layout and once I had it in place I decided to keep it. I concidered rewriting the site and not using frames, but this would be a huge task. I've collected data for 8 years and each year could be separate site and the work would take too long. I decided to keep frames cause of the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Common Reasons to not use frames: 1. Hard to navigate. I don't think so for the one I designed. I replace each frame, each time you move. Its difficult to code and there are a lot of files but I believe navigating is not an issue. 2. Search engines and crawlers don't like frames and you lose possible viewers. Not an issue for me. I don't want this site listed and don't care who misses it because its not listed. 3. Viewers get caught in a frame within a frame within frame circle. Again, not an issue. Its a design issue and it does not happen because all frames are replaced each time you move. Since these top reasons have no meaning to me, I'll keep the frames
  17. Hi MikkiV, welcome to TCH. Please don't take this the wrong way, I just want to explain some of the terms we use so there will be no confusion when trying to answer question. ISP = Internet Service Provider or a company that provides you a connection to the Internet. An ISP is a company like AOL or Netzero, or SBC or a cable or DSL company. They provide a way to connect to the internet to see web pages or get email or upload files to your web site. TCH does not provide you with a connection, they supply you with web space and a place to store your files for your web site and services for it. They are a Web Hosting company, not an ISP. The reason why you can access your pages faster is because of the data centers where TCH keeps their servers and the equipment they use to supply bandwidth. The other hosting site you used probably didn't have their server at these high quality/high speed data centers that TCH uses. Again, welcome and I only mean to help here.
  18. Not sure which silo it was in but here are pictures from the cruise ship as we were leaving last week. http://cruise.venitsports.com/c137.jpg http://cruise.venitsports.com/c138.jpg My Dads place is right across the river from there and its a fantastic sight to see them take off from his roof or front yard. The ground shakes and it feels like you will fall. When he had his boat he would take us out in the Banana River to watch.
  19. You may want to rethink this...this is not a good way to "backup" your computer. Saving the data only files maybe what you want to do. But copying all files from your hard drive to the TCH server will not be a good (or possible) "full backup" used to restore your computer if the hard drive is lost. This is best done with a backup type program like Nortons Ghost and the "image" file could then be stored instead.
  20. oops, I was wrong...forget what I erased...
  21. Hi Krull, from what I remember about this error and have read elsewhere you probably have a corrupted ntldr file. Try using the Recovery Console or find instructions on replacing the ntldr file on your hard drive.
  22. Thanks Steve, I'll drive by there to take a look on my way to the Cruise or when I go back to my Dad's place on the Banana River. BoB in Palm Beach at the moment
  23. David has covered all the bases Mike. I would concentrate on overheating or a virus. I had 2 computers last month to fix because they were rebooting and they were both a virus.
  24. There are patches AFTER SP2, be sure to connect to the Windows Update site and download any that it suggests.
  25. They changed April Fools to *Quiznos Subs!* and yesterday they changed the Topic from Hacked to Forums. Guess they didn't want others to get the impression this forum was hacked when it actually wasn't. So when are we getting our subs? Can you deliver mine to me while I am in Florida? ;-)
