That was reported a month ago.

Thanks for sharing. I remember my first fish, what a day that was. Out on the dock at my Grandma's new house on the South river, a stone's throw away from the Chesapeake. We fished most of the afternoon and I finally landed this huge fish. It was big and brown with a huge mouth with teeth and the ugliest thing I ever saw. We took movie pictures (super 8) of our trophy, me the proud fisherman, and planned on cooking our first meal. The neighbor decided to come down and greet the new folks on the block and see what all the commotion was about. I proudly displayed my fish and the man laughed and said he hoped we had other things to eat for dinner. The fish I caught was a Toadfish and was not eatable and some were even poisonous, it was so bad even the crabs would not eat it. I have since caught many fish but will always remember that first "bigone". Hope your son catches many more.

Is your phone number they called on the "Do not call" list. Companies are supposed to check this list, and abide by it, when soliciting. If you are on the list you can file a complaint here: h_tps://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx

Wow, those times look like you are running thru molasses. Another option would be checking the times of TCH servers over in England and if those times are any better for you having the techs move your account to that server.
-
Sorry but TCH does not allow shell access on their servers. If you can't run a tracert then there are problems and it should tell you at what point it fails. Can you post your results here and someone maybe able to tell you where to start looking for help.
-
Why not run a traceroute to each server and see if you can see where the slowdown is happening. If its happening over here at the TCH datacenters you can then have TCH look into it.
-
Hi Mitan, This will probably be because of your location. There are a number of factors which determine and control your response time and most of them are not controlled by TCH. Your ISP is one, the routers and switches between you and the data center where your web site is located. You have a very long distance to travel between here (USA) and China and I would expect some delays would be "normal". Also I would suspect the internet took a big hit here in the USA because of all the damage done by Katrina, it probably wiped out a lot of backbone in the south and everything is being rerouted around the truble areas.

Thanks Steve, I was also going to mention that point but forgot. There is a lot more to a website than just buying a server and writing the html code.
-
I would do a cost comparison with your dad and I think you will be surprised. To purchase a domain is $10.95 and a Starter Plan is $5 so the cost to host a domain here is going to run around $70 a year. Can your dad buy a Server, purchase the Web hosting software and the bandwidth for less than that? There is a lot that goes into making a website work and TCH takes care of all the backend work for you for very little money. Good luck with whatever route you take.

I was also thinking low power or even being stuck in hibernate. Most laptops also come with a "reset" button. This is usually located on the the bottom of the Laptop and you also use the paperclip in the hole to "open" the circuit and reset the power. I would also remove the AC power adaptor and remove the battery to reset the power.
-
Hi Kempo, 1st locate a small paperclip and then straighten out one or two of the curves to make a short rod that you can hold with the other two curved parts. Now on the front of the DVD/CD drive door try and locate a very small hole and insert the paperclip. This is a manual release for the drive and if done correctly the drive should open without any power. Put in your CD and good luck with the rest of your repair.

Thats not good. Sounds like a lazy techs "quickfix" to connection problems. Instead of walking the users thru the steps necessary to open ports and allowing program access, they take the easy route and just turn the cause of the problem off. I wonder if the Security department knows this?
-
Outlook is also a component of Windows and I don't believe it will be uninstalled if you uninstall Office. Yes there is a version of outlook included with Office but if you already have the same or newer version it will not be installed. As Steve has mentioned, the settings are probably in the registry. The snagit plugin is a separate program and is independent of Outlook and its settings will remain.

Ok, the way I see it happening is like this. 2 programs are needed, a key logger and a backdoor/remote access program. With the key logger they can get access to the VPN username and password. With a BO type program they can start up the VPN client software and gain access to the network. This is a remote possibility. Now, will a firewall stop this from happening? Maybe, maybe not. These programs can be installed via either email or a rogue web site and bypass the firewall completely. Once installed they could either turn the firewall off or open the ports for outgoing activity. So is a VPN secure...no. Is it secure enough for the average joe? Yes, I believe so because the average joe is not going to have access to anything worth the trouble and hard work involved to break into a VPN. They probably just use it to read their emails or transfer a spreadsheet or a proposal in MS Word back to the office. Their access to critical data on a VPN network will be limited. Someone would rather try to attack the CEO's and VP's of a company to see what information they could gain there. And these are the individuals who will have their security departments setup their Laptops to stop those prying eyes. And gaining access to them will be a whole lot harder than your average joe.

EVERYONE should have a firewall... But lets say someone did not. They somehow get by all the warnings, they shut off the one supplied by XP and ignore all the information supplied by the techs at their job and get a VPN running. They also have cable or DSL hooked up. I believe this will be two separate networks and one will not be able to talk with the other without some sort of bridge or software link. Its like NAT, where you have an IP assigned by the ISP for your nic and your router (or software) reassigns a new IP for your network. They say NAT is a good first layer of security since its not easy to determine the IP's on the other side. Yes I did NOT say it wasn't possible, just difficult Now I have not setup a VPN at home. I leave my work at the office, I did my share of 24 hour oncalls for 30 years and I am enjoying MY TIME now. So I don't have first hand experience with it, just a general idea on what I've read about it. So I could of course be way off base...but it maybe a little of both. It maybe secure to a degree...just not perfect and there could be a long complicated process that will allow someone to break thru and get into a VPN. Just adding my two cents to the otherside since everyone was saying it was not secure.

Goto Control Panel, start Internet Options, select the Programs tab and next to E-mail see what is selected as the default email program. Use the drop down box to select Outlook or Outlook Express (whichever you want to use). See if this corrects your problem.
-
Sorry, but I'll have to disagree Just because you are on two different networks doesn't mean one can "see" the other. I believe they separate and the VPN is secure from prying eyes. See if this helps a little. h_tp://computer.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm

*TCH-Dick reminds self to watch the Dell bashing Sorry Rob, I've just heard and seen too many problems with Dell lately to recommend them. But I guess its good for job security

If you have the time look for the model closeouts which occur from time to time. I work down the street from Best Buy and Office Depot and I would make a point to stop by several times a week on my way home. I got my HP zv5000 series for $579. Now the store I found it at was out of stock, but I had them check other stores in the area and found it 7 miles away. These closeouts are not always advertised, so thats why I would stop by to check the sales of the day. They like to clear out inventory before new models arrive. The ones I look for are HP, Compaq, and Emachines...you may find others, I just have had good luck with these brands and everyone may have other opinions. Get what meets your specs and your pocketbook and good luck

See if this helps Steve. Sorry I am late getting back, I was going to search for it and later it slipped my mind till today. h_tp://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_beta1_01.asp

I personally have not done it, but have heard others who have and say its a simple process. This would be an option if you already had the internal and wanted to add it as an external on another system. I would not purchase an internal drive and the external enclosure with the intent to make it an external. There are plenty of pre-made external drives to choose from.

Take a look at some of these. h_tp://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/Storage/Hard_Drives.htm
