  1. Ok, after looking at the domains in question, locking the domain may not be as simple as I assumed. These sites are free web hosting companies and locking them would affect their business. But just allowing hackers to use their service for this type of activity would also affect their bottom line with all the legal problems that would follow. Hopefully they will come up with some other solution before the actual date arrives.
  2. Then the solution is simple and the threat can be stopped before it gets here...lock up those domain names and nothing can be downloaded. And with the above solution this is stopped also since the only change thats made is to the subfolder name used...the subdomains and top level domains remain the same. Yes I realize these are not US controled domains...but this is a threat to the whole world and the country that controls those domains should be able to be convinced to do something about it.
  3. Ok, so you use the card as a direct connect to the modem for Internet access. I have done something similar, I disconnect the wire to my wife's computer and use it to download Windows Updates on all the PC's I work on. I've done well over 100 computers and have not had the problem you have. What I would recommend is you invest in a cheap 4 port router. You can then hang a wire to be used for your repair work and keep your home PC connected all the time. This will also give you a bit more security from the baddies on the internet because you will be hiding behind a NAT.
  4. Hi Raul, my understanding is backups are treated as separate packages and stored separately no matter the media used for storage. So when you do an incremental backup yesterday it is stored away whole, when you do another today it is stored away whole with what ever has changed from the previous backups. The file that was deleted isn't backed up because it didn't change...it remains on the last incremental package. Now, if you made a change to that file AFTER it was saved and deleted the file before it was resaved on another incremental backup, you will not get those changes if you restore it...they were not saved. Hope this answers your question...and I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong
  5. That was my first impression...why would it need to be unplugged? I thought about the laptop but when I checked the actual card it was for the desktop so I tossed the laptop theory. The only other thing I can think of is its a "traveling" network...for conventions or shows. So it has to move from city to city and be boxed up and moved from place to place. This would put a lot of stress on the network gear and explain the need to plug and unplug. If this is the case I would absolutely switch to a wireless setup!
  6. From a review here h_tp://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=500 I've rarely seen problems with a card or the RJ-45 jack except when the lock/release pin has been broken off. And this only happens from operater abuse I've done a quick google search and have not had much luck finding the problem you describe, so not sure what to tell you. As far as the Netgear FA311, I don't do much wired work anymore. With the price of wireless dropping its too muck work and actually more expensive wiring anymore.
  7. In IE, click on Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, Remember what zone you currently have selected. Now select the "Internet" zone, click OK and see what happens. Click on START then RUN and type MSCONFIG and press ENTER. Click on the STARTUP tab and the programs are listed there. Removing the checkmark will stop them from loading. Remember what you remove. And don't remove everything, somethings need to be in there.
  8. LOL, spoken like a true customer
  9. must be down, I can't connect
  10. Sounds like a lot of unrelated pieces are not working which is strange. 1st things I would check are the firewalls. Next I would check your disk space, updating nortons needs disk space as does downloading a file and possibly online banking. Also clear the cache in IE.
  11. Looks like Yahoo is on top of it, the website has been taken down. You still have to wonder how many were caught in the scam before the doors were locked
  12. Ok, after some investigation it was a direct link to a wmv file...
  13. Hmmm, click on the link and IE automatically blocked the site from downloading a file to my hard drive... I don't trust any site that I don't know that wants to put files on my hard drive without my permission.
  14. Jim, I've had Hijackthis in my toolbox for sometime now and use it for extreem cases. I don't usually recommend it to regular users because its very technical reading and can be dangerous if misread. And messing around with the registry is not for the faint of heart I've also been to merijn.org and used CWShreader for a long time, there is lots of good advice and tools on that site.
  15. Yeah Rob, you are correct, nobody is perfect and MS is far from it. But the facts speak for themselves. Windows is on the majority of machines at this point in time because of its ease of use and its compatibility with most 3rd party products. Linux is making headway but I'm afraid its not enough to overtake the leader at this time. We'll just sit back and watch and when it does start to catch up and the oppotunity presents itself, I'll go pick up some Certs for Linux so I can get paid more for fixing things .
  16. So we just throw away all these windows programs we spent good money on? Agian we waste the money and time we already spent learning Windows? 85% of the population can not read the code and will not be able to change anything. Windows is king because you buy a PC, plug it in and it works. You don't have to do anything and thats what the users want. Users are lazy and do not want to work hard to get what they want. Linux is difficult and doesn't always work with everything you want it too and only power users will be the ones to use it. Linux may be your choice but its not going to overtake Windows until it can stand toe to toe with Windows in the "easy to use" department.
  17. Why not use the Backup Program that comes with XP? h_tp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx
  18. What you are missing is you are looking at this from the customer side of the equation. The rationale is a simple answer, profit. All businesses have a business plan and part of the "plan" is to price their products in such a way as to keep attracting new customers and keeping old customers AND make a profit in the process. One technique is to price the lower end products (most popular) with a very small profit margin and pricing the higher end products (less popular) with higher profit margins. The higher priced products help keep the company profitable while the low priced products keep a steady flow of new customers coming in. Once they are a customer the "plan" says that to keep the customer a customer you need to keep them happy, and a smart business owner does other things like gives great service and support.
  19. I've been reading Bruce. I expect vaporware from software companies like MS. I was just disappointed and suppose I shouldn't express my feelings out here since they always seem to get me in trouble. I'll go back into reading/helping mode again.
  20. Seems this started a trend, no number picked...announcements not given when promised
  21. Pix, splitting your inbox file into several files is probably what you need to do...but not the way you are currently thinking. What will probably work is to go online using one of the webmail clients and creating a couple of temp folders (or one) and moving all the emails into them, splitting them up into managable sizes. Once that is done you can move emails back into the inbox, logon using enduro and download that group. Next move the next group into the inbox and download that until you have gotten all your emails. Now 250MB sounds like a lot of emails. Are there that many or are there just a couple with large files attached? If its large files you might be able to just download them from the webmail client and delete them to make the inbox smaller.
  22. Nice article but I had a small problem with it. If they keep up the domain payments each year and the hosting payments...it could be possible. But Murphy's law is always out there Again its a nice article and I'll be waiting for the server count to increase over the holidays.
  23. d.a.n, the blocking of access after repeated failures is a standard practice and a security must have. If TCH were to remove this "feature" I would be looking elsewhere for a more secure host. You never know when someone is going to attempt a brute force attack on your web sites and without this protection you are a sitting duck. Now its a simple matter to tell folks not to do what was being done. I am surprised that folks continued over and over again after failing a couple times. After about three times I know I typed it right and further attempts and guessing at what it might be is a waste of time. I and others also know that after X amount of retries in a short timeframe will cause a lockout. So educate the users and explain if they want to keep trying, do it in lengthier periods, for instance wait 15 minutes before trying again. But this is not going to help...if a password doesn't work, there is usually another reason for it not working and beating it with a hammer is not the right answer.
  24. Check the plans here: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/web-hosting-plans.html But I'm afraid to get the disk space requested (unlimited) will be a show stopper. You can check other hosts but afraid this will be a problem whereever you look. Disk space is an expensive item. Good luck
  25. I'm a little confused about your question...or you are not sure how email works Ok, lets see if I can answer what I think you want by explaining how email and ISP's works. You connect to the internet using an ISP (which you are changing), and parts of the internet are protocols that perform tasks such as web browsing (http), file transfers (ftp), Newsgroups (nntp), and email (smtp, pop, imap). Now email is a two way street with a starting and ending point, and sometimes this street has alternate routes and I think this is where you are confused. Your ISP probably has given you and email address and TCH allows you to use their email servers with unlimited email accounts on your domain. These are two separate and distinct start/end points but you can use your ISP to access both of them. As long as you know the account name and its password, you can use the ISP's incoming (pop3) or outgoing (smtp) servers for your mail. So I think the answer to your question is it doesn't matter. You can access your DOMAIN email for either ISP as long as you have the email client you use configured correctly. A MX record is the "mail eXchange records, which identifiesthe mail server that will handle the emails for your domain.
