My guess is Yes, but I'm not going to load a vulnerable version of exploited software to test it out. Generally you can only do so when logged in as a moderator. However, you REALLY should consider switching to an updated, supported version of a forum software. There are many good ones out there than will import your IPB users/posts practically seamlessly. Continuing to use IPB 1.2 is really not a good idea.

It sounds like you're already installing an OS on a computer when it comes, regardless of the OS that comes with the product. So it seems that if you were to encounter this type of problem if/when a successor to Vista comes out then you could switch all your systems to Linux or something else at the time. Or you could just figure out how to make your environment play with more than one "standard" operating system. I think it is reasonable for MS to expect that more than most of computer users should only have legitimate copies of its software (installed properly). Your case of downgrading from XP to 2K is an exception to the rule, but how many people out there who are installing software in that fashion are doing so in a legit manner? Few, I suppose. So MS will continue to protect their brand and you'll have to make modifications in the way you do business to accommodate that.

As you do this, remember that for accessability reasons you don't want to exclusively use color to identify links on your page. There are a good percentage of people out there who are color blind who won't be able to differentiate between colors to know what is a link and what isn't. It's not a bad idea to take a screen shot of your page and view it in Photoshop (or similar) and convert the image to greyscale. If the you can still differentiate between normal text and links then you're probably okay. Removing the underline on links can make it hard for your users to know WHAT is a link and what isn't...

I'd say it is time for a trip to the ever friendly help desk. They can help you analyze where the problem is coming from, and then can help you with a solution. Link to the help desk is at the top of the page. Good luck. Keep us updated on what happens.

No. Actually, I took a pre-existing theme, and then modified the images in Photoshop to get the look I wanted, and then made code modifications in Notepad. I've actually not used Nvu for production work in some time. I used to be a really big Dreamweaver fan, though. But recently any sites I've created either got a template from the CMS/blog software that I modified, or I just created in notepad. (I never thought I would say this, but) I've gotten to the point where for most things, it's just easier to use notepad.

He wanted me to be in on it and help with the website and documentation and stuff. We got together with some of his work friends and got the process started. Then I found TCH, and saw what a web hosting company was supposed to be like. I started asking my friends why we were planning on charging so much for so little in return. When they couldn't give a good answer, I jumped ship and moved all my accounts to TCH. They're still floundering over there, and I've happily moved on. But the point of the story is: TCH really is the best, and I've been around the block looking!)

This doesn't bother me, personally. If I had purchased a computer from a mom and pop store, and paid for a genuine copy of Windows, I want what I paid for. If I have to go back to the mom and pop store to make them fix the problem, then that is what I would do. All, in all, it's pretty mellow. Imagine if M$ patched Windows so it woudln't RUN if it weren't a validaded version. THAT I'd have more of a problem with. But I think M$ has a right to defend itself agains illegal uses of its software, and in the end, this a mostly fair way of doing that, I suppose.

I'm not sure I totally understood what you are asking, but I think Don explained it right. Do you understand what Domain parking is? In case you don't, domain parking is when two domains resolve to the same content. So let's say you have example.com and example.org. Lets say that example.com is your main domain name, and you want to park example.org on top of it. You point both domains at the same server (given in your welcome email), and then you ask the help desk to park the .org on your account. Now when users enter example.com or example.org, they see the exact same content, but the URL they entered stays in the browser's address bar. So you have the same content, but you can access it with either URL. Does that answer your question?

Okay. REALLY LATE addition to this conversation, I realize, but I have to put in a plug for a company called OneSuite. I've been a customer there for more than three years, and I've been SO HAPPY with the service and prices. We don't have any long distance on our home phone, and don't need it. With OneSuite we dial a local phone number (not available in all areas). When calling from home, OneSuite recognizes us so we don't have to use a PIN number. Then we have pre-programmed access shortcuts for all our calls. I dial 21# to call my inlaws. With it being a local number, I actually press the same number of buttons to use OneSuite that I would if I dialed direct, and I pay a lot less. How much, you ask? 2.5 cents a minute to USA, and (get this) 1.9 cents a minute to Canada (both using the local number. If I used the 1-800 number, it's 2.9 and 3.2 cents respectively). And they have great international rates as well: United Kingdom for 2.2, Germany for 3, Brazil for 5.5, China for 2.2, Japan for 4, South Africa for 7, etc. I'm not in any way affiliated with OneSuite. Hi Kaybee, Welcome to the forums. I don't use VOIP because I have DSL (through the phone company), but if I were to choose a VOIP provider, It would probably be Vonage. I have a number of acquaintences who use Vonage, and they love it. The trickiest thing that one of my friends discovered is that you basically only have one phone jack, so you'll only have one physical phone that works on the system. If you want to have multiple phones that work, you have to do some rewiring or use cordless phones that have multiple handsets with one base station. Hope that helps.

There are certain actions that can only be taken on certain files if you are the file owner. For example, files who don't have an owner can't be deleted by you. "Owner" basically means that you were the person who created the file. If you uploaded the file to the server or it was uploaded through your account, then you are the owner. If the file was created by a script, then it is possible that "nobody" is the owner. The server created the file, but didn't assign an owner. For security purposes, you can only delete files that you own. I don't know how you can tell if you own a file or not (except that if you try to delete it and can't, then you probably don't own it). It is kind of like the Windows XP multiple users feature. Lots of people can log in to any one box, but user 2 can't modify user 1's files (assuming 2 isn't an admin). In virtual hosting, lots of users can log in to any one server, but you can't modify anybody's files but your own. If you hare having trouble removing a file, you can ask the help desk to delete it for you, or to change the owner to you. Maybe somebody else can chime in and explain how you can tell who the owner of a particular file is.

Basically, CURL is not allowed as part of a cron job, as that IS command line useage. However, CURL can be run as part of a PHP script, and you can set up a cron job to load a PHP script/page every half-hour (or whatever). So you have to add the extra step in of creating a PHP page that executes the CURL command, and then set up your cron to run the PHP. If you need help, this was discussed in a different thread. Search the forums for CURL and see what you come up with. If you still need help, let us know.

I would make one additional comment. You mention that you have multiple blogs. The starter plan will NOT allow you to have different TLD's for your different blogs if they are all in the same starter plan. And TLDs can never point to a subfolder or subdomain. They have to point to the root index page for your site. If that doesn't make sense, post back, and I'll explain it in more detail. If you want to have multiple domains, you'd need a reseller account. Best wishes,

MikeJ covered your questions, but I wanted to welcome you to the forums, and let you know that I have a WordPress blog hosted with TCH on my own domain that uses permalinks, cron jobs, and php mail, so not only can I tell you that it should work "in theory", but it also works "in practice." If I were you, I'd either use the LATEST version of Invision (as opposed to ONE of the latest versions), or I'd switch to a forum software that releases free updates (like phpBB, SMF, etc.) You'll find some great installations for these in Fantastico. But in any case, thanks for the heads up!
