  1. I'll spend some time here reading, great referal! I'll be back to ask more geeky questions.... thks! Mr. Bill
  2. That clears up alot! thanks! now who wants to break down the IP system? just kidding! Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  3. it took me couple of times reading to get it, you spelled it out well, i'm just sleepy.... you said that a switch keeps the address of the requesting node and on the return the address is read back and the switch sends only to that node.... But if an un-requested packet comes in, the switch routs to all for them to figure out if the info is for them or not.... does a switch mask ip address like a router? (does a router mask ip addresses?) how many times will I spell swich instead of switch? thanks for hanging in there for me! Mr. Bill
  4. Thank your for your response.... This helps, however (my original question was vaigue) in more commerical aplications are the discriptions the same? (if I understand you so far....) In a web enabled network I may have 15 nodes all connected to a switch, additionaly I may have a T1 modem also connected and if a specific node (say node 4) calls for an internet ip, the modem respondes with that ip packet back to the swich and all of the nodes see the info, but only the node (4) knows it sent the request so it accepts it and all the other nodes ignore? (is this even close?) and if this is close, is this done for cost reasons? since a router creates less network traffic, why even use a swich? thanks again.... Mr. Bill
  5. what is the difference?
  6. up 'til recently I would use IE to handle the "complex" (more than 1 image or two upload) but with the recent upgrade of cpanel I had to stop. A wise person here (thanks HG!) reccommended SmartFTP and I'v been hooked ever since. I am just learning how to get away from netobjects fusion and do my own html so this (smartftp) has been a great learning tool in my site maintanance. and I found it easy to use! Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  7. www.google.com/ie quick and a great launchpoint to anywhere! Mr. Bill :Nerd: isn't it funny how none of our start pages are our own websites...!
  8. Another Photographer! YEAH! (nice work!) Welcome home.... Mr. BIll :Nerd:
  9. Dsdemmin Rocks!
  10. Hi guys.... I beleive the prefrence is for a text link if they couold have their druthers.... (It is worth more to the search engines I think.) Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  11. Not sure if this helps but it took your main page 17 seconds to load on my machine and I am high speed- cable. The background comes in right away, but the progress bar hangs 1/2 way for about 10 seconds, then comes in the rest of the way and then the page shows up. My main page had a javascript that was the culprit (it took 20 seconds to load on my machine and I have a cable conection.... zoom!) changed that out and now, Bang! it's there! Thought you might want to know.... Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  12. Hi All, I am thinking of installing a new processor to work with some other newer hardware.... I am real good with computers inside and out, but have never done a cpu change. I am not too sure how tough this is, or what all I can do to upgrade the machine. the specs are as follows: Operating System System Model Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 (build 2195) 00101850 6730 15133200050200 System Serial Number: 4094HPPAV3 Processor a Main Circuit Board b 600 megahertz Intel Celeron 32 kilobyte primary memory cache 128 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: Trigem Computer, Inc. Any thoughts? The device I want to istall needs a P II / 800mhz minimum. (dvd burner) otherwise the machine works fine for me and I have no other reason to upgrade it. Thanks in advance, Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  13. Not to stray too far from the great advice given here.... TCH is a great support group that has answers beond the normal experience. Is it plausable to "capture" some of that experience in an honest "Co-op" sort of way" that stresses the single web artist backed by an extremly experienced mentor group? (please don't flame me for this.... the more I think about the question, the less I like the thought of posting it, but I thought it was an interesting perspective to the original question....)
  14. My humble entry.... Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  15. How can I insure a correct cross over from domain bank to tch if I register greatfolios with tch? I am good at goofing things up and don't want to do that this time.... (I have 60 days left on the domain name....) Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  16. I can't speak too loud on this, however one of the key concepts is not to have links to those pages anywhere, I have a family site (billmccorddotcom) that I made one refrence to here at the forum and now it has a pr 3 from google. your friends can not refrence their pages in other forums, guestbooks etc. The other thing that I think you can do is add a nospider line into your .htaccess file (someone else will have to tell you how, I am not an expert on this one.... Good luck! Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  17. Outlook Express for the last 6 years (still have one email in my in box from Jan '97)
  18. In another forum, there is a pending issue of spam email through a TCH server. In the reply from Bill (HG) there is a comment about the user or someone using his mail service is sending a "boatload" of email.... My question is this: can anybody gain access to the mail accounts and is there anything we can do to keep them from gaining access as webmasters besides using password responsibility? I just want to make sure I never end up in that situation just because I may not know how hte abusers gain access. Thanks, Mr. Bill :Nerd:
  19. What about his U.P.S. and on board backup batt? Rock Sign
  20. It's designed to scare trouble away before they even get started! :Nerd:
