  1. Dear TCH family member, Wow! My thoughts are with you. I sincerely wish you good health and hope that you are surrounded by loving, caring family and friends. peace, Stefan
  2. Hi Dennis, Thank you. By the way, GREAT work and research on your part. I've installed Squirrelmail on my domain previously, but ran into some major problems. Your work will make my own installation of Squirrelmail easier. Yes, it's definitely nice to use the personalized version of Squirrelmail, the plugins make it more functional. peace, Stefan
  3. Hello, I'm not sure what the ftp root is: do you mean the public_ftp folder? thanks, Stefan
  4. I installed Service Pack 2 also. It's been a week, no problems that I can see. I suggest installing it by following the Windows Update link on the Microsoft web site. I definitely encourage reading through some of the online documentation before clicking "install" at the final step. That way you can have some ideas about what to expect when Windows reboots after upgrading itself. peace, Stefan
  5. Well, I am using version 3.0 beta 1 (06/09/2001). I'm going to read through all the "evidence" at PestPatrol, then follow up on related links before making any decision to uninstall (if I do). Good work finding that link. Stefan
  6. annie, Thanks for the tip on Sam Spade. I've bookmarked the web site. Yeah, interesting that CyberKit is considered a pest according to PestPatrol. Hmm, I've never had any apparent problems using the program. Sigh, time for a little more research into this issue. Stefan
  7. Hello all, Just curious, has anyone here ever used CyberKit, a multifunctional networking program for Windows OS? Apparently, development stopped three years ago. I still have the last version of it on my computer. I learned a lot about the internet by using CyberKit. It includes the following functions: Finger, MailChecker, NetInfo, NSLookUp, Ping, PortScanner, QoD, Scheduler, Time, TraceRoute, WhoIs, WindowList. Do any of you fine folks know of more recent Windows applications that provide most or all of these functions in a single interface? Shareware or Freeware, doesn't matter. Thank you peace, Stefan
  8. I, ahem...have my computer in the bedroom that my girlfriend and I share. She can't sleep with the sound of the CPU fan, mixed with the occasional hard drive whirring and grinding all night. Myself, I feel somehow...comforted by them. I think it comes from my days of computer programming classes, when I would have to awaken at 4:00 AM to finish a programming project that was due that morning. I leave my home PC running all day (on the days I am home to use it), but set the monitor to use screensaver mode after 15 minutes, then power down after 1 hour of inactivity. Out of respect for my girlfriend, I turn the PC off every night. When we move to a bigger home I will probably leave the PC on most of the time, with the occasional reboot. By the way, there is a really fun book by Linus Torvalds, "Just For Fun: The Story Of An Accidental Revolutionary", in which he describes the period during which he created the operating system Linux. I love the passage where he describes living in a tiny room with his computer running beside his bed. peace, Stefan
  9. Hi kajoiner, You might try these calendars; they involve a little setup on your part. They are PHP and mySQL based. Calendarix, phpCommunityCalendar, WebCalendar Good luck peace, Stefan
  10. I use Dreamweaver 4, TopStyle, and UltraEdit nowadays. Used to code exclusively by "hand", piecing together various javascripts, html, style sheets, and other snippets. That's when I would spend hours every day doing it, thinking that someday I would get good enough to get a professional gig developing web sites. I learned a lot about the "behind the scenes" stuff, but in the meantime, other web site developers were spending THEIR time learning to use high-powered applications like Dreamweaver and doing nice work with less effort. After designing my web pages, I test them in all my browsers: Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Avant Browser, and MY IE2. These days I've gotten too lazy to consider all the different screen resolutions and operating systems other people use. So I live in denial, thinking that "if it looks good on my computer, it must look good on everyone else's". What the heck, it's fun. peace, Stefan
  11. Hi bonsaimule, Here are three freeware WYSIWYG HTML editors and their web sites: Amaya, a project managed by the World Wide Web Consortium, Selida, Enersoft SiteGenWiz. Good luck. peace, Stefan
  12. Hi Feather, There is a good web site that has many, many free and commercial scripts that you can use on your own site. They just require that you configure them to work with your server settings. Anyway, the site is called HotScripts, it's updated most every day. You might try browsing through the CGI/Perl and PHP scripts. Here are the URL's: CGI and Perl Form_Processors PHP Form Processors Spend some time, you'll most likely come across a few options. 99% of the scripts I've ever used on my web sites have come from HotScripts. peace, Stefan
  13. Thanks turtle! If you looked at my source code, you can see that I used Macromedia Dreamweaver to design the web site. There is a web development group called ProjectSeven that sells customizable templates that work with Dreamweaver. I used the Transitions: The CSS Masters Series package, which uses CSS extensively. I finally got tired of trying to hand-code all my web sites, cutting and pasting Javascript code to make things work, although that's a great way to learn about web layout. I probably would have kept that up, but I wasn't getting paid, and more importantly, it took time away from my music practice. peace, Stefan
  14. Hey, no trouble at all. My site's not going anywhere, nary a visitor except a few friends and family members. Have fun, Stefan
  15. Hello, Please add my web site to the TCH Family Members page. URL: http://www.phatfunkjazz.com Site Name: PhatFunkJazz. Description: A personal web site from an electric bassist/guitarist whose personal musical style incorporates Funk, Jazz, and Rhythm & Blues. Link acknowlegement: My web site has a link back to TotalChoice Hosting. thank you, Stefan
  16. Yo roadmap, I'm doing the exact account upgrade you are: FROM Starter Plan TO Silver Plan. Here's what I was told, submit a Help Ticket stating the change you want. They'll send you a link to the billing service that will ask you for payment. Once you do that, send a copy of your new receipt via the Help Ticket you opened. Then TCH will cancel your existing account (you'll get a refund for the unused months of service, so you'll see a credit and a new charge on your bank statement). Then TCH will begin a new account for you. It's my belief that you will NOT lose any existing data, but will see an upgraded amount of disk storage and bandwidth. If TCH support staff finds any incorrect information, please correct me. I'm just stating what I know about the upgrade process from a newbie perspective. I really want to be clear for myself before pressing the "SEND" button. peace, Stefan
  17. One thing that really bugs Yuck! me about all the web hosts I've used (until TCH) is the "divide and conquer" (literally) concept where customers don't have a clue who else shares their server. There's no opportunity for dialogue between peers when things go awry. Okay, now that I've said that: My friends have a very successful auction business (mostly antiques); they've had their company web site online for three years now. The web site is a big component of their visibility to sellers and buyers. Like most first time web site owners they went with a pretty big name company to host their site. Their web developer uses FrontPage to do all the work, even uploads using FP (please, she learned everything on the job, how could she know about FP?) Recently they maxed out the disk storage and weren't allowed anymore uploads (no advance warning from the support team) until they upgraded their account...fair enough. Unfortunately, now that they have a new user name FP won't allow uploads. The web developer has spent hours with tech support begging for some clue. To be fair, I FTP'd their site and everything seems okay on the server end. But for a person who knows very little about techie stuff, it's daunting. Their business is suffering, they've asked me to help figure it out. My point is this: IF they had an account here at TCH I am confident they wouldn't have to suffer like this, or pay an outsider to figure out what's wrong. They wouldn't have tech support saying, "It's your problem, fix it on your end. That's all we can do." I'm trying to convince them to at least try TCH for a month, if even just for the support Forums. I know they would be pleasantly surprised. Wish me luck. peace, Stefan
  18. Okay, I probably should know the answer, but here goes (one last clarification): What if I don't have a subdomain for my girlfriend, but do have a subdirectory for her, i.e., www.****/girlfriend/ for her friends and family to see what she's up to? Am I within the legal use if there is no link to her directory on my main site OR do I have to have a link on the main site that ties it all together? This is for a Shared Hosting account. thanks, Stefan
  19. I agree 100% with Aaron that Second Copy is very useful. I have used it for over a year now, backing up data files on my PC daily (compresses them into zip files). I recently screwed up my computer, corrupted a lot of system and program files. Luckily I had current backups. I took the following steps: (1) uploaded them to X-Drive, (2) reformatted the hard drive, (3) reinstalled Windows XP and all programs, (4) downloaded all my backups, then restored the saved files...it worked! I share a computer with my partner; she has some very important documents which could easily have all been lost. I may have saved our relationship because of those backups with Second Copy. 'Nuff said. Stefan
  20. Wow, I am very impressed and pleased to see the Data Center Information and Colocation links on the TCH Home Page. I was unaware of them until this morning when I was just "surfin". It's really cool to know the geographical location of the web server that hosts my site...geeky, I know...but important to me. What great honesty; that's the kind of detail that sells new clients on your service. I know, it took three years to find TotalChoiceHosting. I'm staying! Props to Bill and all your crew at TCH! peace, Stefan
  21. Yes, I totally agree with you. I've been through several web hosting companies, tried a few 30-day trials and finally found TCH I don't consider the money I've spent a waste, otherwise how would I know what great deals TCH offers? I sing their praise to everyone I know who complains about their web host. peace, Stefan
  22. I'm using a Mac 9.2 with Netscape 7.02. Your Search box looks fine. None of the problems you stated appear. Nice work! Stefan
  23. I just moved from Olympia, WA to Antrim, NH...drove across the country in 4 1/2 days. I guess I've been pretty spoiled with a ComCast cable internet connection (never down, VERY fast), which made my web site maintenance quick and efficient. Also, I do all my work (?) on a Pentium IV running Windows XP. My new home has a DSL internet connection, with all the computers (Macintosh) networked to an Apple Airport HUB...sigh! I won't be able to update my site until I get my PC set up and connected via a wireless card (WI-FI 802.11b protocol). This means I must dig in my heels to learn yet another aspect of computers: networking . I just purchased a WI-FI card online, when it arrives I'll open up my PC, install it and then try to configure it to work with the Apple hardware. No complaints, it's just interesting how much I took my little web design life for granted. I'm humbled by the increased learning curve, yet ready to take this project on. By the way, it's been fun accessing the TCH forums with a Macintosh 9 computer. Stefan
  24. Some people use computers to DO things, i.e., graphics, programming, gaming, web surfing, e-mail, etc. Others use computers simply because there's nothing quite like bringing an operating system to life, like when Linux actually boots up after an hour of installating, trying to figure out what kind of hardware the computer is using, internet connection, IP address... In a warped way it's kind of like being the creator of a little world, virtual though it is. Once Linux is running, then comes the fun part of configuring, upgrading, and customizing the desktop...so many choices! Hell, the first time your e-mail client retrieves your e-mail it's like the sun suddenly comes out from behind the clouds. Really, it is pretty cool. I have a Pentium IV with a dual boot partition, running WinXP and RedHat Linux. There is a good boot/partition manager called BootIt Next Generation that I like. It's less expensive than PowerQuest's Partition Magic. My two cents. Stefan
  25. Thank you for installing SquirrelMail; I've been using it for a couple years on various web sites. Question: there are some useful plugins that extend the features, i.e., import/export addressbook to a CSV file. These plugins, available at the SquirrelMail site can only be installed via shell access. I know y'all are busy maintaining our servers, maybe you could please install some of those plugins? Stefan
