strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Where might I get a webeditor that can include forums such as this one? From what I hear this forum you can get for free.. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 You can install a forum just like this from your cpanel, look under add on scripts Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 I don't see the forum.. I see InvisionBoard.. But that has a fee.. Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 I found it.. It was under Advanced GuestBook.. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 I don't see the forum.. I see InvisionBoard.. But that has a fee.. Your in the right spot and the fee is only for their priority technical support. You don't have to pay that. Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 I already got my forum set up. ^.^ Now, since my username for the website is ClanDsC, obviously when I set it up it's gonna automatically make me a member. I've already set up my new account name strodeath, cause I'm not being clandsc. I've given stro Admin powers, and now how do I delete clandsc? I can't find the button to do that.. Quote
vendlus Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Which forum are you using?? If you're using Invision, go to the Admin CP. In the left pane, click on "Users and Groups" Click on "Delete User(s)" Search on 'clandsc' Click the delete button on the page that comes up. Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 Nah I'm using a forum exactly like this one. Ah nevermind! I found it. You havta edit the persons profile, then you gotta checkmark the box with delete.. Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 Ahhhhh! Ok I'm totally messing everything up. I have a major problem. I created a FORUM by going to Bulletin Boards and creating a new one. I typed the URL to get there wrong, now I want to move\delete that forum for that URL.. Quote
strodeath Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 Well??? 1.) When you first create the website, it gives you the default PHP logo in the top left of the index.. How do I change\delete that?? 2.) Is there a place where I can download already made templates\styles? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 try phpbb.com if it is a phpbb, or ibplanet Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Replace this file forum/templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif with your logo. Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 I replaced it, and it did nothing. :-\ I deleted the file to and still nothing. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 The file you replaced it with has to be the same name as the one you are replacing logo_phpBB.gif Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 In that case, is there anyway I can convert a JPEG to a GIF? Quote
Hockeypuck Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 In that case, is there anyway I can convert a JPEG to a GIF? If you have Photoshop (or somthing similar) you should be able to simply do a save as. Otherwise, someone might know of a conversion program somewhere, but I don't know of any off the top of my head. Try: www.download.com www.versiontracker.com To see if you can find a conversion program. Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Hmm, well I just changed the name for a GIF file instead, just to test it out, so it has exactly the same name, but it's still not working. What must I do aside from replacing logo file?? Cause that's all I've done. Just replaced it. Quote
boxturt Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Assuming you have replaced the image with another .gif file and that it is called exactly the same thing as the original one then you might want to try clearing your cache/ temp files. Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Ok I know how the temp files are cleaned, what about cache? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 You don't need any special software to convert it. Just do it the quick and dirty way. Open the image in Paint and then go to "File>SaveAs>chose .GIF for the extension. Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 That would work too. ^.^ Where's cache? Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Where's Cache guys?? I know where temp is.. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Temp and Cache are the same thing on your PC. If you are using Internet Explorer try pressing Ctrl and the F5 key when viewing your page to force a refresh. Andy Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Ok this isn't working. I deleted all the files that was in the folder. But the problem is, my computer isn't even using any files from my computer! I dont' have Php_logo ANYWHERE on my computer and it's still up there on my website. www.clandsc.com/forum Do I gotta go into control panel for my website or something? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Yes the file you want to replace is on your site. Just use File Manger at the bottom of the Cpanel to upload your image named logo_phpBB.gif into the folder public_html/forum/templates/subSilver/images. Quote
strodeath Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Well sheesh you coulda told me it was in the control panel from the start. :-\ I'm a noob here people, I havn't a clue what I'm doing. Quote
GroovyFish Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Instead of critizing people trying to help you, you might try offering a "Thank you". Quote
Head Guru Posted October 4, 2003 Posted October 4, 2003 Instead of critizing people trying to help you, you might try offering a "Thank you". I couldnt have said it any better myself. Nothing like wearing out your welcome. eh? Quote
strodeath Posted October 4, 2003 Author Posted October 4, 2003 And you'd think that you all would be smart enough to realize I'm a noob by now. Quote
Deverill Posted October 4, 2003 Posted October 4, 2003 strodeath, It is blatantly obvious you are, as you put it, a noob. As a new user everyone expects you to have questions about your hosting home. None of us, however, expect your unappreciative tone or the reliance on being a "noob" to excuse a basic lack of understanding nor the inability to follow a conversation. It would be like a person going to a car dealer and buying a car. The salesman would expect questions such as "What weight oil does this car use?" or "What octane gasoline should I use in it?" He would not expect a question like "What does 'reverse' on this stick thingy on the wheel mean?" or "How do I open the door?" We all have been willing to help you learn what you can do here, but it is very difficult to continue to do so with such rude comments as "You'd think that you all would be smart enough to realize I'm a noob by now." Of course, if none of us are that smart then why ask us all the questions. I hope you will learn from the others here... they are a very bright and helpful bunch. I also hope that you can learn what you need to make a successful web site for yourself. Most of all, I hope you can find it in yourself to actually respect the wisdom of others and accept their instructions and try to find things out on your own instead of asking for every little thing and then insulting the very ones who have helped you. It's all about being a good citizen, my friend. Respect goes a long way - insults fall straight to the ground and go nowhere. Best wishes! Quote
RJSkon Posted October 4, 2003 Posted October 4, 2003 strodeath We all realize that you're a "noob", that's all the more reason to use the word "Thank You" Richard Quote
strodeath Posted October 5, 2003 Author Posted October 5, 2003 I'm just rather annoyed, for out of the 10 or so problems I've had, both on this website and others, everyone and everything that tells me how to do it, explains it in expert terms. I have NOT had 1 explanation given to me in which I fully understand it. From the beginning of this thread you all should have realized I was a noob, and yet people still fail to FULLY explain what to do. They leave a fact or two out in which I don't know what to do, and am left stumped. As I've said 3 or 4 times, it is very frustrating and from my previous questions and actions, when you reply to one of my questions you should know that you must fully explain what to do, from the simplest terms to the more complicated ones. ( In which I hope you put in simplest terms ) My constant confusion as to what to do has put me in an ill-tempered and short-tempered mood, in which happens very easily. If you all would just be patient and allow me to learn from you all, then when I grow to be more intelligent in making websites, I can appreciate all your help. But I fail to understand why I should appreciate your help when you all know I'm a noob, and you are continuing to confuse me by not fully explaining all your situations. So to sum it up... be patient with me, once I learn what I'm doing, I'll become a more lovable guy. ^.^ Quote
curtis Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 strodeath, Let me start out by saying I am not trying to talk down to you, I just want to be helpful,so please take this post in that light. When I decided to build my first website I spent over 3 months reading tutorials on the web before I tried to build a page. I had a shortcut on my desktop to Webopedia,an Online Dictionary for Computer and Internet Terms, so I could lookup terms I didn't know. I spent countless hours using Notepad and little snippets of code to see how and why they worked. I bought a book on HTML and another on JavaScript. Those two old dogeared and stained books are on a shelf by my computer today and I still use them. My point being, try to learn what some of these terms, that these very helpful people here use, mean. I do know how annoying and frustrating it can be and I also understand that most don't have the time or just don't want to spend the time to study and learn. I consider myself very lucky to have friendly and helpful people like the ones in this forum to help me when I have a problem. Try not to bite the hand that feeds you, even in frustration of not understanding. Everyone here will bend over backwards to help, I see them do it everyday. Also try to remember that old saying about first impressions. Well thats enough from me. I DO hope you take this post in the spirit it was written and not as an affront to you. curtis Quote
borfast Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 (edited) But I fail to understand why I should appreciate your help when you all know I'm a noob, and you are continuing to confuse me by not fully explaining all your situations.Well, let's see then, you want it ALL explained, right? OK, here goes:In the beggining it was darkness all around. All the matter of the universe was concentrated on a single point with no dimension, called a singularity. Then that point expanded - the so called Big Bang. It was the beginning of the universe... hum? what? Oh, you already know this part? Oh, ok, then I'll skip a bit forward, to the dinossaur age, how's that? strodeath, what I mean is that you can't expect us to explain you every little detail of something. It's exactly like jim put it: It would be like a person going to a car dealer and buying a car. The salesman would expect questions such as "What weight oil does this car use?" or "What octane gasoline should I use in it?" He would not expect a question like "What does 'reverse' on this stick thingy on the wheel mean?" or "How do I open the door?" You have to start somewhere, not wait for everyone else to tell you exactly what do to, how to do it, when to do it, why... My advice is that you first search the internet for the answers to your questions. Use google for that: http://google.com If you want to learn about something, say webpages, search google for "webpage tutorials". You'll find tons of them and if you read them, you'll learn a lot. Then, if you have any doubts or if you couldn't find anything, ask for help. But *don't* ask for people to solve your problems like their life depended on that. We all help out where we can at the TCH forums and although we don't expect any appreciation for it, we certainly don't expect people to say things like "Why should I appreciate your help when I was asking you to do this for me and you only explained me how to do it?" Take this as friendly advice, not like I'm trying to bash you or something. Don't depend on others to do what you want. Be independent. You have internet access, which is unvaluable when it comes to learn about almost anything. Use search engines to look for what you want. There's an old chinese saying that goes something like this: A fisherman was sitting on a rock, waiting for the fish to bite, when a poor man came to him asking that he spared some fish so that the poor man could eat and feed his family. The fisherman said "I won't give you any fish." but the poor man saw the fisherman had already caught a lot of fish so he asked him "Why will you not give me any fish? You already have so many, just a few won't make any difference to you." And the fisherman replied "No, it won't make a difference to me but it will make a difference to you, because today you and your family would eat but tomorrow you would have to ask me for some fish again. Instead, I will give you a fishing rod and I will teach you to fish. That way you and your family will never be hungry again." I hope you see what I mean and I don't have to explain it to you... Just kidding If you have any problems, don't hesitate to ask for our help. But please, try to do some things for yourself. Learn. Make your mind work. Feed it with knowledge. By the way, just in case you're all wondering, the poor man is still around these days. Ever heard of Captain IGLO and his fish sticks?... Edited October 5, 2003 by borfast Quote
DarqFlare Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 I just breezed through this thread... some thoughts... 1) The TCH family is not here to bow and serve just one person, str. 2) The nicer you are, the more willing people will be to help. 3) Thanks and appreciation go a long way to getting people to help you additional times. 4) If you're really, really new to websites, why in the world are you purchasing space to develop on if you can't use much of it to its full potential, nor know how to use any of it? You obviously don't have a great deal of experience with how websites work or folders, so why on earth are you shelling out cash for this? Don't take any of my comments the wrong way. I was a website n00b once too, but I began on Geocities. Quote
