As an added note, you can buy your own SSL, and from what I've been told (by all means TCH correct me if I'm wrong) your "clients" can share yours.

I like Linux, but I (personally) prefer the BSD license/development model. I like the fact that all the BSD's include the entire "world" (ie it's not just a kernel, it's all the userland tools, etc). Of course, so do all the Linux distros... I just don't like when I go from one distro to another, and everything has changed (config/startup file locations, etc). That's just my personal rant lol.

I'm not too worried about the hardware support... my DMZ is a Pentium MMX 200MHz with 64MB RAM and a 2.1GB HD lol. I think it's old enough that most hardware should be supported. But I could be wrong... anywho, something I'll take into consideration.

Hey gang. Here's a run-down of the various OS' I have running on my home network: FreeBSD Debian (Etch) Gentoo Fedora Core 3 CentOS 4 (and, unfortunately :-P) WinXP Now, my DMZ box is currently running Debian (Etch), but recently my zeal in the BSD's has been renewed. This box first started as my primary webserver running FreeBSD, but has since moved on to being a DMZ server. I've been considering installing OpenBSD on it, and I was wondering, has anyone else in the (TCH) family used OpenBSD? What are your thoughts? Is it all that it's cracked up to be (which I'm sure it is)? Thanks guys. Oh yea, and if you've got a spare moment... tell me what your favorite OS is and why...

Upgrades in service are very easy, just open a ticket with the help desk and they will square it away with you. As far as keeping information (login/passwords), I'm certain none of that changes, however I'll let someone from TCH give the "official" word.

Welcome to another Aaron!

I picked up my Toshiba brand new on sale for $700. Only had 256MB RAM though, but that was an easy problem to fix

Since it's a club, the ".org" domain may be more fitting anyways. Tell them to go ahead with the purchase of the .org (as long as they don't mind doing so).

Of course you could have everyone just memorize your address, and tell them not to put it in an address book... or use FreeBSD! Sorry couldn't resist.

I, too, prefer phpBB. Really easy to administer and install/upgrade.

Need Little Help In Blocking Email,
cajunman4life replied to local1's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Or, if you don't have a paypal account and don't intend on getting one, you can set up a rule in spamassasin on your server to block any email from "paypal.com". I am a paypal member, and get these fairly often. They are somewhat amusing to read most of the time. I especially love getting the ones from banks I have never even heard of... especially when it's not even a bank here in America (Banco de Brazil rings a bell lol). But the best has got to be those "you had a rich relative you knew nothing about and they died and left you a whole bunch of money. Just send me $2,000 and I'll get you the money!". I actually replied to one of those one night when I was bored (and maybe a little inebriated) that said "Sure, just take the $2,000 out of the money you're sending me and we'll call it good." Amusingly, I haven't heard back... -
Hi Shriram, welcome to the forums! A few quick answers for you: 1) None of the hosting packages include a domain name. So domain name is still $10.95 a year aside from what you pay for hosting. 2) The benefits are all the same pretty much as any other domain registrar. You can change name servers, yes. Not sure what you mean by unlimited forwards. And you can park another domain, as long as it goes to the same place as your main domain does. 3) Depends on how you wish to pay. If you pay for a full year up front, then your billing cycle will be once a year. Otherwise it's once a month. I think (under the new billing system) it will probably be the first of every month if you choose monthly. 4) From the best of my knowledge, I would say give 30 days notice, but I'll let someone from TCH answer that. 5) TCH only manages the server you are on. You are responsible for installing/configuring any software that you wish to add to your account. However, there are quite a few people on these forums that use WordPress, and I'm sure they would be more than willing to help you out if you have any problems. Hope that takes care of you. Let us know if you've got any other questions!

While it is possible to unzip the file on the server, I find the following procedure the easiest: 1) Download the "Changed Files Only" version of phpBB. 2) Open in your favorite .ZIP program 3) You'll notice a few other zips inside. They will be named things such as "2.0.16_to_2.0.17.zip". Open the one that starts with the version number you currently have. 4) Extract it to a directory on your local computer. 5) Upload it to the directory you keep phpbb in on your server using your favorite FTP program (overwrite all files, but keep in mind if you've made any modifications you'll have to re-do those if they are overwritten). 6) In the main .ZIP file, there should be a file called "update_to_latest.php" (probably in the "install" directory). Create an "install" directory in the phpbb directory on the server, and upload that file to the install directory. 7) In your web browser, navigate to that file (ie "http://www.mytchdomain.com/forums/install/update_to_latest.php"). ** NOTE: before doing this, you may want to make a backup of your phpbb database using cpanel. 8) After the update_to_latest.php file has run, delete the "install" directory. 9) Everything is up to date!

Rohan, another thing you should consider is installing updates manually. Sometimes cpanel is far behind on their updates. And I know from experience phpBB is extremely easy to update (even install) manually. Just a thought.

Yep, I know about the *nix viruses. For the most part, the problem with them is they will usually only damage your user account, and if everything is set up properly it shouldn't effect your overall system. The same could be said about Windows, too, but since the "Admin or Vanilla User" choices are reletively new to most Windows users, and Admin is default, most people set up their user account with full admin privs. Anyone from the *nix world will tell you that's just plain foolishness lol. As an added side note, while Viruses will continue to evolve, I believe so will computer operating systems, and eventually we'll get to the point where the OS will detect that a program requesting permission to run is a virus, and deny that permission. Just a thought... Edit: One thing I neglected to mention was privilege escalation via buffer overflows and the like. However, I usually only see this attack being done by "script kiddies" (but that doesn't mean there aren't other more serious crackers out there using this attack).

Cpanel And Site Maintenance Questions

Yes fill in the first two with the DNS servers you got in your welcome email, and leave the third blank. Edit: It appears Thomas replied while I was typing... I hate mornings lol. -
What's a virus? (I use FreeBSD and Linux ) Actually I do have two Windows machines at home, an older desktop that I have since started using AVG free on, and my laptop which I run Norton on. Usually I can tell when a machine becomes infected with a virus. Hardly anything gets through my hardware firewall though.

Yes, TCH is awesome. Even though I'm not staff or a mod, thank you for your kind words. It's reviews like this that caused me to sign up for TCH. I have a silver plan ($5/month) and I'm a standard reseller ($35/month), and quite soon I'm sure I'll be on either the semi or full dedicated boxes. TCH is great!

Ok Bill, I'm IMing you... looks like I just missed you (by 15 minutes)... I'll be on for a few hours yet.
