  1. Not a problem Rob ... I expected that there would be a move required. Thnx!
  2. FYI - I ran a machine with 1 256MB chip and 1 64MB chip with Win 98 and it worked just fine for several years. You may have something else going on that caused the registry to become defective. Might want to think about this as you try to recover.
  3. Hello potential helpers! Not sure where to put this thread. I've set up Apache on my Linux computer to serve up pages for a testing environment. I mostly develop software and it should speed up my development process. Anyway, at one point I had it working and now I just can't seem to find out how to get it going again. I switch HDs, so I reinstalled everything. I have SSI (Server Side Includes) on some of my web pages. I know that SSI works because using the "#include exe=" works. However, if I try "#include virtual=" the script (using perl) does not process. Instead I end up viewing my perl code ... the text. I use symobolic references to get at my perl script directory. I think it's something to do with my Apache configuration files, but I've adjusted all that I think I need ... still nothing. I've given the options as "Alll" and include the correct prefix. Not sure what I'm missing here. I'm using Mandrake 10.0 Linux with Apache 2.0. I've been stuck for a while on this. Just can't seem to get by it. If you can help ... thank you in advance!
  4. Oh dear Lord that was funny. The family came it to be sure I was Ok ... laughter was uncontrollable and like that of a mad/crazed man. Now that I can breath and type again ... had to give credit to the poster on that one. Whew! Ok! ... back to work. *giggle* ... "indistinguishable to the sound a little girl makes when you drop a spider down her dress " ... OMG that was just too funny. *sigh* ... really back to work now ...
  5. Currently TCH does not provide a secure FTP connection.
  6. Hey there ... The only way to send a mail note is to use a script that runs on the server side. Your script runs on the client's computer. So either you envoke some "Form mail" type of script that's ready made, or you send the data to a script (Perl/PHP) that sends out a mail note.
  7. Actually, I don't believe it's completely possible. Mostly possible, but eventually it will be found. The "referrer" link is something you can't hide. So when you bounce from your "anonymous" web site to another that logs and visits a referring web site, your cover is blown. Also, the robots.txt file can be ignored. There's no rule that says search engines go by this. It's only a curtesy. If you really want to protect it, give it password-only access. Then, in theory, only those with a password can get in.
  8. That's pretty wild! How tall is that?
  9. Well I thank you all for being understanding of what appears to be a very unique viewpoint on this. Am I offended by the site? Yes, some. But I like my rights, and if we started catering to every viewpoint free speach would be dead. Nobody wants that. I'll put all my cards on the table here ... I lead a small men's group at my church. So, yes, naturally my views are going to be very concervative. I have learned pornography is a very rampent thing in our society at large. Guys can get hooked on it. This may sound unusual to some, but some guys use this as a form of pornography. Seeing a particular pose I can understand where this comes from. I understand there are culltural neuonces too, as well as comperable examples from our own culture as expresses earlier. Point taken and it's valid. My view is understandably unique. And I don't necessaryily expect a bunch of people to get behind me on this. But in the small circle that I work with, I realize that sometimes there's more there than is immidately recognized. Thus I am particularly sensitive to see things in a different light. This is really why, in a way, it seems that you may be hearing what you do about this. We're all friends here, and I'm sorry if my line of thinking has detracted from your original intentions MikeJ.
  10. Hi Bruce, I agree with your findings. Some of these issues are almost a distant memory. I've only been here a couple of months so far myself. But the bad customer service, the black-listed e-mail, the unscheduled downtime and the supposed server upgrades ... seen it all, hated it all. Unfortunately, as you indicated, it seems to be that the majority of hosting services still thrive in this environment. It just makes me wonder ... But TCH should not be alarmed the these people are still in business. In fact, they should welcome them, because they show how GOOD TCH is and how BAD the other guys are. In the end, there is one number that TCH will be very happy with ... customer retention. While people like Bruce and myself keep searching for a better solution, knowing that one must exist, they will eventually happen upon TCH and take up permenant residence. I know I'm here to stay too! It's always good to remind yourself of where you came from!
  11. Sorry if I growelled a little ... not at Mike ... but at the "case mod" I just didn't see the "scuplture" as objectively as MIke did. Yes, if you look at the larger pictures they are a little more disturbing as to the image they are projecting. My comment to Mike was really because, well, I like the guy. I had to rib him a little! Jim is more on-base with why I was "upset" ... but I'd rather say "alarmed" ... at the picutres. Yes, this is a family site, and it is part of my reason for saying as much as I did about it. Pictures and depictions of this type are really borderline child I AM A SPAMMER. Go back and look at some of the larger pictures and the way this girl is posed. True, it's inanimate. But what are the motivations for trying to make something like this? I realize that my stance is may seem extreme to some. I'm Ok with that. But I won't go far as to demand to remove something like this from our family forum. Being allowed to present my view is enough for me.
  12. Just a sculpture? Oh come-on Mike. I KNOW you're smarter than that. A sculpture in the form of a pre-pubescient girl ... or is that too much of a fine point to put on it?
  13. I don't think I like the direction this is going (not this post ... but that site). That's just scarey. I looked at it for a few minutes trying to figure out exactly what it was supposed to be or do. Is it supposed to be a robot? I saw one picture with what looked to be a motherboard attached. In any case, too much time, and innovation spent in a really undesireable way!!!
  14. Since we have 6 kids, that's pretty much what our family is about ... raising kids. We don't get to go out that that much though, but we LOVE leaving our kids with people. We've had these startled sitters who said "I told the kids it was time to go to bed ... and they said OK ... I was amazed! They got ready for bed without complaining." It's sad, but others notice that. Usually the older generation praises our family. They notice more than my generation. But we're very happy ... and our children are, for the most part, a joy. For those who read this and think "They must get into trouble sometime." Let me reasure you ... they do!!!! And some days I could tear my hair out, but thankfully those days are few and far between. Thank you Bruce and Brich for your encouragement. Sometimes you feel like you're the only people who believe spanking can be an appropriate form of discipline. It's good to hear that others out there still think so too.
  15. I'm a reseller myself and I think I understand what TCH is trying to say. TCH offers $4/month plans that allow you to have multiple sub domains. Under these plans, it is not acceptable to "resell" or give away your web space to other parties because it's just not feasible for TCH to sustain a stable server environment if people sold off their sub-domain areas. These accounts are meant for individual use, not multiple enteties. However, a reseller account lets you establish as many accounts as your web space and bandwidth allow. There's no need to put web sites under sub domains, nor would TCH really care if you did because the primary limit is your disk space and band width. So this rule doesn't really apply to reseller accounts. Just to the regular accounts. I hope this explains what you are asking!
  16. Interesing little rhyme there ... and comments about parenting. Having 6 kids myself you can guess that things are different in my house. I bet most of you would cringe at my discipline style. We would appear very strict to what the typical family picture is painted. We demand a "first time" discipline response from our kids, and we do spank our kids. Most of the "spanking" happens for the 6 and under group, but my 8 year old gets a swat once in a while. As children are taught and aware of the value relationship and privleges play in their lives, discipline changes to be that of taking away priviliges, or sometimes the knowledge that thier actions have dissapointed Mom or Dad. My children also contribute to the keeping up of the house, including dishes, laundry, and general cleaning. They also help in occasional entertainment of our 3 month old son. Our 7 year old is excellent with small kids. With six kids we just have to run a tight ship. Our house would be anarchy without it. But one thing I am thankful for is that we can take them anywhere and not be concerned about embarassing public fits. They are great kids and respect their parents. And we love them all very much. They're also very affectionate too ... and give that affection to us freely and often, as we do to them. Since our oldest is 8 we can't predict what the teen years will hold, but we are hopeful. One motto I've always believed is that: "If you don't discipline your kids, someone will" (their boss or the law). But good discipline is only the beginning, but without it it's difficult to teach and develop good, strong relationships with your kids. My thoughts of course ...
  17. Hyperthreading ... allows the computer to think like two computers/CPUs. Hypertransport .... helps memory communication between the CPU and the RAM. There's so much to hardware I wouldn't know where to begin to help you. But I can give you a philosophy. Since you're working with a 550 (me too) you're used to a particular speed. Chances are a 2.0ghz P4 would blow your socks off and probably save you $1000-$1500. Personally I base all my decisions on the limitations of the motherboard. During an upgrade, or new system, where I'm makiing a big jump in speed, I buy the best motherboard available on the market with the latest features (max Ram, Max CPU, PCI-X, Serial ATA ... maybe even over-clocking abilities, maximum flexibility for FSB and voltage regulation) and then save $300-$500 on a cheaper processor. In the future when the P5 runs at 5.5ghz, there might be a possibility of an upgrade path in 3 years where components are really cheap. When you buy memory, buy large chips that take the minimum slots up. So if each slot allows for a max of 2GB, buy a 2GB chip. Leave the maximum amount open for later increases when filliling the 2-3 that are left with another 4-6GB ... for Win2008. Me (we're in the same boat) I'm puting my dollars into making a Dual AMD Opteron system running Linux. But I'm only buying the 1 Optetron (240) now and at a lower speed, with 2GB of RAM. Later on I'll buy 2 of the latest CPU's and add 4-6GB of RAM. It will be like a new machine. My costs? About $1,500 for the parts and 4-8 hours of assembly and burn-in. Talk about your question with a thousand different answers!!!! Nat .... I'm still waiting for your "yes or no" questions!
  18. The short answer is ... you can't. Or at least that I am aware of. To create the ability to make changes to your database, you have to write scripts (PHP and Perl) to interface with your database to execute these things. If you are willing to detail more of your project and what exactly you are wanting to accomplish, I can better assist you in your goals. There's many different ways to accomplish things, but usually 1 or 2 are the best. Knowing more about your project will enable me to tell you the better direcitons to go. FYI - ASP is not really support on Linux. It is ... but as an add-on and not on the TCH servers.
  19. I like the "alerternative OS" patch myself. Not only that, but there's a certain "blue" screen that I haven't seen for a while. It's solved many of my OS related issues.
  20. Hi Blue, I'm worried that my information my lead to a greater mystery. I'm a Linux guy, and looked at it in 2 seperate browsers. It didn't show the error that you mentioned. In your JS code though, I noticed something unique to IE. See below I'm wondering if there isn't something to this function that is causing the duplication, because it appears to be IE specifc. Try Netscape on your end just to be sure. It's not an answer, but maybe the right direciton. Good luck!
  21. Hey blue, Sorry, I was blind ... let me get my glasses on. :Nerd: There, that's better. Looking at it now!
  22. ... and so far she's been a very good student! Her excitement reminds me of why I got into this business ... to be creative in yet another way! She's doing all the work ... so even I will be interested to see how it turns out! I wonder if something like this could be done in a larger scale ... student/teacher or mentor/mentee kind of thing. There's lots of people looking to learn these days. There are so many projects to do!!!!! Later!
  23. Hey there Raul! I've been on Linux for about a month now since we talked in another thread. Things are going really well. I have totallly wiped M$ from my larger HD and now completely on Linux - Mandrake 10.0 Community. Still don't have Apache working right though ... having trouble with the "virtual" includes. Execs, and other SSI work fine but "Include virtual=" don't execute my included script files, while the "exec" does. Any ideas? Thanks for your support on giving me the courage to go forward. I'm not looking back!
  24. Hey blue ... did I miss the web address?
  25. Hi, I hear your little problem and something like a gut feeling says that I might know what your problem could be. Are you "escaping" your input before trying to do anything with the data, like writing it to the database? If you don't escape your input, and the user types in one of those important string delimiter characters, your program might end up chopping the string at that point, especially in words with conjuctions and all. Those single quote can get you! Escaping your input usually means any unsafe character, including spaces and other unprintable characters, are translated into their corresponding hex values. Just remember to change them back when reading your data from the database. To veryify that this is a probelm, type a whole bunch of letter-only input. If large amounts of text work without single quotes, double quotes, or other probable characters then you found the problem. Good luck!
