When you ran it the first time you should have gotten a perferences box to set up the name, etc. You can change it by clicking on the little wrench icon on the tool bar under the drop down menu that says Inbox. That will allow you to change the name, add a signature, etc. Good luck.

The Bulletin Board option on the cPanel is PhpBB so if you install it from there it will set up the database and user name as well as all the config settings to run the board. It will be set up with your cPanel login name as administrator so you can log in to the admin section using your cPanel login info and set things up like you want. I set one up to play with it some time back and found it to be pretty straight forward.

How are you installing phpbb? The easiest way to install it is to go to the cPanel and install the Bulletin Board under the cgi scripts section. It will prompt you for a subdiretory name (I used forum) and do all the work for you.

I have had problems with Movable Type and Image::Magick as well. Seems to be a known problem with MT 2.51 (and still not working in 2.6). I have another program that uses Image::Magick to create thumbnails and it works great.

Have you tried setting the permissions at 775? That would at least be a little more secure.

I tried opening my AWStats from the Cpanel then I saved the page as stats.html to a local directory on my computer. Then I copied the *.txt files from my tmp/awstats directory to the local directory. I was able to view my stats fine locally using that method. Maybe a cronjob to copy those files each day would work.

One way to see what kind of response times other sites on TCH have is to look at some of the web sites of members of this forum. Many put their addresses in their signatures, others have them set up in their profile. If you see a WWW button at the bottom of a message you can go to the user's web site by clicking on it. Here's my Photo Page which has some very large images (700k+) if you click on the thumbnails and resized photos. Nothing real exciting there but you can get an idea of how fast the service is.

Hard to believe a two line post has expanded into the topic with the most replies on the board. I lost power last night about 7:30 and was offline until it was restored this afternoon. Thought I might be able to catch up this morning but when we got the the church where my wife works the cable modem was out there as well. Hope you are all safe and warm. The power keeps blinking on and off here so we'll see how the night goes.

I was reluctant to post that message for the very reason Head Guru mentions. I left a subdomain .conf file alone and do check it from time to time to see if there has been an update. As for changing permissions, it is easy to go back and change them back to allow writing in the future but it's not a change that should be made if you are not willing to risk potential problems.

I had the same problem trying to use my cpanel name. There was a username assigned to me in the email. When I used that it worked fine.

I thought you might have something besides tape. I have a pair of Tivos (Tivi?). I have a cable modem so I use cable rather than Dish or DirecTV. I did get the lifetime service so there is no monthly charge here either. I bought one for $50 after rebate and won the other in a contest so I figured I could spring for the $200 lifetime service at the time. It's the only electronic device that I ever bought that my wife can't do without. As for being a tech junkie, Lianna, you are in good company. My kids at school asked me yesterday what my next toy was going to be.

PhpBB can be automatically installed from the CPanel just by answering a couple of questions to define the database name. Invision Board (the one that we are using now) can be installed fairly easily and is a free download. Several of us on here run Invision Board and can offer help in getting one set up. Yeah it's a nasty thing that you can't enter your birthdate without a year in Invision Board. That means the calendar has that huge number out beside your name on June 5th.

Yeah, the problem with trying to set up a cronjob is that the update time seems to drift forward which means eventually it would creep past the time you copied the file and would rewrite it. Looks like the easiest solution is the permission route. It's worked for me for over 24 hours now on two accounts.

Rather than using crontab or copying a a file I just tried changing the permissions of the .conf file to read only (444). I tried that yesterday morning and it didn't get overwritten this morning as it had previously.

After being on a cable modem for three years, if my transfer rate drops below 100 KB/sec I quit and try again later...

I loaded the site several times and refreshed several times as well. It loads ok for me (using cable) but all the headings are .gif files and load at different times so it seems to load slowly. Total load time for the page was from 3 to 8 seconds each time. I checked my overall net connection and it was running at normal to above normal for me. I also downloaded the test.zip and it downloaded at 220 to 250 KB/sec which is pretty much what I normally get. Hope this helps. It's been a long day so I hope this is semi-coherent.

Since it is a global setting, will it be possible to set up the global file to default to reverse DNS? I like the look of AWStats but would change my vote to stay with Webalizer if the only info we get from AWSTats is IP address.

All the info you see on the front page of the Invision Board is generated by the program itself. Top Posters, most recent posts, etc. are all updated automatically. As for which is best, it's a bit like arguing over Coke or Pepsi. It boils down to a matter of personal perference. Since both are free I installed both and played with them to decide.

The AllowToUpdateStatsFromBrowser would need to be set to 1 to get the update option. The DNSLookup variable only affects the IPs processed after you set it, not previous ones.

I can't speak to all the differences between the two boards. I looked at Invision first and liked it so that's what I am using. Both are well supported and free so the best bet is to try them both out and see which you prefer. You can get a copy of Invision at http://www.invisionboard.com/ (I got the link from the bottom of this page.) I found Invision to be easy to set up and it is easy to maintain. There aren't as many skins (or themes) as there are for PhpBB but there are some. Have fun.

I mentioned in another thread that I do have stats loaded in AWStats now but they didn't update automatically, but I changed a setting the the config file to have the option to update from the browser. That worked but I only got IP addresses in the visitors section so I changed the config file again to get reverse DNS. I love the looks of things with those settings. The odd thing is when the system did an auto update my Webalizer and Analog stats updated but not the AWStats. To top it off, the config files I had changed in AWSTats were reset to the default values. I definitely would prefer Webalizer over AWStats if AWStats will not have reverse DNS enabled. I like being able to see which countries and domains visit my site.

I was able to update my stats in AWStats for the first time tonight. I only have a couple of days of stats. I editted the conf file to allow updating from the browser and then hit update now to get them. The default config file doesn't have reverse DNS enabled and that is one of the things I like about Webalizer--I can tell easily which countries are visiting my sites. I enabled that and checked a subdomain and it worked fine.
