I also use the WP Contact Form plugin for WordPress. I get very, very few comment spams, which is surprising, since I get A LOT of blog spam (which goes away automagically due to SpamKarma2)

Have you considered WordPress? /*Paul runs and ducks No seriously, I've never used MT, so I can't claim WP is better than MT, however, I REALLY LIKE WordPress. You should use Fantastico to install a test version of WP on your site and see how it goes. You could even import your MT content just for testing purposes. WP is so slick, and with the Plugins you can add, you can do just about anything. Anyway, glad you figured out that IE was the trouble here.

Thanks, Don. I'll pass it on. Actually, I pointed her to this thread. Maybe she'll chime in so you can all say hello to her.

I have a friend who I recommended join the TCH family. She did, and is trying to connect to her site via FTP. I'm trying to remember how this is set up on accounts initially. Do you have to create an FTP user, or is there one already created with your default cPanel username? (Its been a while since I opened a new account with TCH.... I can't remember how this part is set up on new accounts.) She says she is using her cPanel username and password for connecting to FTP, but she is getting username/password errors, using both FireFTP (Firefox extension) and the FTP Client built into Windows Explorer. Should I point her to the help desk? Thanks!

Oh Bruce! You are my hero-of-the-day™. Why, oh why didn't I ask you this question before I spent two hours working on this yesterday. I love this script. It worked perfectly and will be exactly what I need. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm trying to create a page where site users can enter information about themselves and upload a simple image. I can't get any script I've tried to work. I get permissions errors, or other problems that I can't figure out. I have created the proper permissions on the upload directories but that doesn't resolve the problems. Does anybody know of a simple php-based script for uploading images to the server. I've tried a Google search, and the main hits don't help, as I can't get them to work. Are any of you using a script that works that is simple to incorporate? Thanks

For example, you could use PHP. All the stuff in the PHP tags isn't rendered in the HTML when the page loads. The server processes it, but the end users can't see it because it stays server side. Be sure your forum is hacker safe; there are many form scripts that are vulnerable to header injection; if your contact form gets compromised, your account will get shut down. Best wishes,

Moving Email To Google Apps (gmail)
abinidi replied to chuckmalani's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I've been a proponent of this method for a long time now. I've been using gmail for my personal mail for 3 years or more, so it made sense to let gmail manage my hosted mail as well. The only problem I've found is that occasionally if my server gets restored from backup for some reason, the MX records are reset. To avoid losing mail from this problem, I set up a redirect in my Email Forwards section for every e-mail address I have on my Google Apps page. Those addresses re-direct to a non-TCH hosted account. That way, if the MX records are ever reset by accident, I don't lose messages. This resetting of the MX records has happened to me three times, but TCH has always been quick to fix it once I point it out. -
YAY!!! Congratulations! Hope it goes as well as it looks like it is going to

I believe that the answer to this question was posted in a different thread. I'll re-state it here so that others who read this down the line can easily find the answer. When you submit a request to the help desk, your request isn't actually submitted unless you complete both steps of the two-part process. First, you have to enter your ticket information and your username and password. Then you will be shown a list of FAQs from the knowledge base that might potentially answer your question. Then you have to do the second part: you must click the Submit button on that page for your ticket to be posted to the system. If you just do the first part, you won't get your ticket into the system. You must click the "Submit the Ticket, my answer is not listed" button at the top of the second page in order to get your ticket posted to the system. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forums, emarkp! Note that when you open a help desk ticket, if you don't know your username and password, you can type none into both the username and password field. Then your ticket will be allowed to proceed. Hope to see you around the forums. It's a friendly place.

Multiple Copies Of Same Email Coming
abinidi replied to Mission's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I think Dick has maybe hit the target here. Check the actual account using Horde or whatever web client TCH provides. Are there multiple messages THERE? Or are you just downloading the same message multiple times from your TCH account. As for the ones on your e-mail sign up, you should check the message headers to see if the message ID is the same. If you are really getting the exact same message, the unique ID will be the same. If the server is sending multiple messages, then the unique ID will be different. Hope that helps. -
I Can´t Connect To My New Site...why?
abinidi replied to ivanmax's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Just so you know, this is totally outside the control of a webhost. In order to understand this, you have to understand how the DNS system works. Here is a very brief, very simplified overview: You register your domain. When you register, you provide the domain registrar with the IP address to associate with that domain name. The IP address is the virtual address of your new website. The domain name is just a masked way of getting to the IP address (since totalchoicehosting.com is easier to remember and use than something like 111.23.5.678 or whatever IP address TCH uses). Your registrar publishes your masked address (your domain name and IP address combination) into a publicly-accssible database. But all the OTHER ISPs out there have to connect to that database and download the new information. This is called "propogation." When your ISP hasn't received the updated address information for your new domain, you can't get to it, because your ISP doesn't that "example.com" is supposed to point to "123.456.789.012" or whatever. Your ISP needs to refresh their DNS listing so that you can get to your new domain by typing in your domain. ISPs are required to update their DNS information at least every 72 hours, which is why it can take that long for it to work (maybe you modified your DNS settings 10 minutes after your ISP refreshed their DNS information). However, chances are usually pretty good that your ISP will refresh their DNS settings before the full 72 hours are up. Again, this is totally out side the control of a web host (any web host) as it has to do with the way that all the OTHER computers on the Internet connect to each other and share updated address information. Hope this helps answer your question. -
A couple of other sites I found on the topic: www.google.com/help/netneutrality.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality commerce.senate.gov/hearings/witnesslist.cfm?id=1705 Here's the way I see it: If some ISP tried to interfere here, or even if a majority of ISPs tried to interfere with the net neutrality concept, there would be a new generation of ISPs who would have a "new" business model of providing a network that supports the net neutrality concept. I connect from home via DSL. I get my DSL from the phone company, but I still have a choice on who is my ISP. For a long time, I went with a 3rd party ISP. I know that if my new ISP ever did something like the threats in this thread, I could easily switch to a new ISP. It is an interesting topic, and one that I think merits some attention. But it isn't time to panic, yet, in my opinion. Hey, if the big telcoms join forces against us, who knows? Maybe TCH will branch out and form a net-neutral ISP. Edit: tried to remove links from showin as actual links, so as not to violate TCH Forum linking policies.

Do you know about the Web Developer extension for Firefox? There is a tool on that extension that allows you to automatically resize your browser to common screen resolutions, so you can see how your site will be displayed for users of various resolutions. Just thought you might find that useful, if you didn't already know about it.

Is it even possible to submit a feature request with cPanel to request that forwarding mail have Spam Assassin rules applied BEFORE being forwarded? It seems that would save a lot of trouble...

Welcome to the forums. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!

I don't get it. Can you explain?

My Outgoing Emails (from My Domain) Get Blocked
abinidi replied to undersan's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Well, kind of. You can set up an actual e-mail account, and set that account to forward all incoming mail to an external address. The account stays on Google servers, but the mail in the account can pile up. You can set the Google account to delete all messages after they have been fowarded, so maybe that will work for you. Google never deletes accounts on your domain for inactivity, so you don't have to worry about logging in every couple of months or anything. The problem, though, is that Google hosted only lets you have 25 accounts total, so that becomes your upper limit for number of external forwarders. I do this with mail for one of my family members. They get mail on our family domain. It drops into their Google Hosted e-mail account, and then is fowarded to this user's work account. Hope this helps. -
Don't Fall Victim To The 'free Wi-fi' Scam
abinidi replied to youneverknow's topic in Security Discussions
WOW. Very informative. I'm sitting at work and I opened my wireless settings, and I see a "Free Public Wi-Fi" just like the one in the article. And it is an ad-hoc network too! I had no idea. Thanks!! -
Welcome to the forums, ngr!! You can also ask these questions to the help desk (link in the header bar for the forum). When asked for a username and password, use 'none' for both (no quotes). Additionally, you can PM one of the RED colored staff members (look at the bottom of the forum). They are paid TCH employees, many of whom also have IM accounts you can use. TCH's owner is Head Guru, and every time I've contacted him, he's been great to work with. Good luck!

Awesome. Worked perfectly. Thanks again!!! Now I can share my theme

Wow. I just saw this. THANK YOU!!!! You are my hero of the day!!! Now I'll go add this and see how it works. Thank you thank you thank you! Yay!!!

This might be a good question for the SMF forums. They have a broader user base and you might find somebody there who has encountered this problem. They will probably be better equipped to troubleshoot this type of problem as well. Good luck! http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php

My Outgoing Emails (from My Domain) Get Blocked
abinidi replied to undersan's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Absolutley. I agree. My point wasn't as much one of "you're really missing out if you don't have pictures" as it was one of "be aware that Gmail doesn't necessarily equal Google Hosted." They are separate applications that share most common functionality, however, don't go in to the Google Hosted thinking you're just getting a rebranded Gmail account. You aren't. And my example of features was just to show that even currently there are features in one application that aren't in the other. But going forward, new features might be added to one application and not the other. They are separate apps. They just share a lot of common functionality. If you are interested in all of Gmail's bells and whistles, you should at least be aware of this point before you switch to Google Hosted. I'm not saying it is a reason not to switch, but I clarify it because I think it is important that you understand what you are getting from Google Hosted. I'd love to know the answer to this question myself. It seems to happen after my server goes down, but the mx records arent' getting restored to what they were before the server went down. Every time it has happened, I've reopened the same ticket so the help desk can see it is a recurring problem. I don't know what more to do than that.
