This morning at about 7:30 the line was out the building and across the parking lot. When I took care of some other business and came back at about 9:30 the line was down so my mom and I could get inside and vote. They were almost back to the door again by the time we finished voting. Everyone in my office has voted and I'm seeing a wonderful number of "I voted" stickers on people's shirts. The elections supervisor this morning was estimating an 80% voter turn out for my county which is awesome!!!! Yay Florida!!! (now if we can just count the things properly. ) Even if the "other guy" wins, I'm happy so many came out to vote. As for not voting for the lesser of 2 evils, have you ever noticed that 'vote' and 'veto' are the same letters? I see it as a vote for the lesser evil is a veto of the worst candidate. About no vote - no say... Why is it that the loudest whiners are the ones that won't do anything about the problem - in any situation from President of the United States right down to the amout of trash on the sidewalk by their house. Like the commercial with the running faucet - it's good to take a stand on something you see as a problem but by all means, do something about it!!! The next few weeks will be interesting with all the lawyers out there watching the election, eh?

samporras, I apologize if my words were unclear... I did not mean to imply that everyone that doesn't vote is lazy. Indeed there is a large number of folks in your situation as well. I still think they should vote even if it is for the lesser of two evils because someone 40% for your values is better than someone 30% for your values... but I could understand if they choose not to vote. It's the truly lazy-non-voters that I think should move.

Excellent point, Bruce. If a website passes the validator it will probably be very close to generic code that everyone understands. The validator should identify all proprietary (IE Only) code too.

My approach is a little more hard-nosed. If they don't know the candidates and the issues then I think they should just move to another country where that's decided for them so they won't have to worry about it. I can think of no excuse to be uninformed besides apathy. Edit: spelling - duh.

Happy Birthday Samantha - watch the tv for my birthday gift... mine and millions of others that is. I'm definitely voting and only life-threatening illness could stop me. By the way, I'm in Monroe County, Florida in Key West and we have a great system here. No chads, dimples, etc.... we just fill in little circles with ink and *poof* it's a vote. The optical scanners are so much better than the other methods I'm surprised the whole state doesn't go with them. Anywho, EVERYONE THAT CAN SHOULD GO VOTE!!!!!! I know who I'd rather everyone vote for, but I can deal a whole lot better with the ones voting for the "other guy" than those who don't vote.

I'm thinking along the same lines as Rob. Finish your site in FrontPage which looks good on IE. Then spend your time learning HTML and what's IE-specific. The knowledge of HTML will prove invaluable to you and you can rather quickly find the key troublespots making it not look right in other browsers. Use a text editor and you'll not only get the most out of the exercise in knowledge but you'll also be able to make precise changes. Just switching to Dreamweaver for an existing site will not "fix" the problems FP caused.

It's been a long time since I used FP but there may be some options you can set to make it more compliant.

I did some research and found the original "whistleblower's" website at jibbering.com/2004/10/google.html He states at the top that Google has made some patches as of the 20th and his example asking for credit card numbers does not seem to be working in firefox OR IE. He states there may be other vulnerabilities but this one specifically seems to be taken care of. Never blindly trust anyone though. The truth is that anyone is at risk... my runbox account, yahoo, hotmail, aol, any ofthem could be compromised internally or externally and who'd know it. If it is a secret either encrypt it or keep it off the 'net. In my case, I don't have any secrets important enough for anyone to go to the efforts of stealing them other than my identity.

It could be that you just got a bad batch that had problems and the next 1000 computers were without problems... ... but that just goes to show that everyone has different experiences and it's hard to get a truly objective idea of a company's quality. I know folks that hate Dell and love Compaq, others hate Compaq and love E-machines and yet others think IBM is the best game in town. Another thing is that I've seen people put the evil eye on a line of computers because "it shouldn't be so hard to hook up to the internet!" Yeah, like their lack of knowledge is the company's fault.

When you move to TCH the first time there is a DNS propagation that usually takes 24-72 hours... which is normal. After that, the Internet looks to TCH to find out specifically where your site lives. If you do happen to move from one server to another, the DNS lookup record would not need to be changed because TCH would still be providing that information. Because of this, any update caused by moving servers would be instantaneous.

So it was... see how confusing it gets when we don't stick with English!

The thing I like best about Dell is that it is completely customizable - pick out how much memory you want, cut down the cost if you don't need the good speakers, etc.

TCH may have a world wide audience but how many of us users would be totally lost if one person posted in French, three in Spanish, one in Russian and a few in Japanese. The forums would be just about useless. We can't very well say XYZ language is our second language because most of the staff and mods are not bilingual and therefore it wouldn't matter which other language we pick - none is a better choice than any other. We really must keep everything in English and I'm afraid we may have to start closing/deleting posts that are not in English. Remember that TCH can be considered liable by some courts for what's posted on their site so they can't allow messages that could be illegal without knowing... and that's just one reason. Clarriega, if your Spanish is bad because you've not practiced it then why do you keep posting in Spanish?

For what it's worth I believe the question is "How do I get subdomain.**** to go to www.****/ if the subdomain does not exist?" (Geez, the Google translater doesn't work very well sometimes!) But Thomas is right that all posts need to be in English.

I can only give my experiences so take it for what it's worth. A few years ago (4-5?)I had an HP pavillion desktop and HP printer and after 10 months and tons of calls to tech support my printer was still spewing garbage. It was something in the PC/Windows ME I believe but me with my degree and their hardware/software printer falks couldn't do anything to get it right so, "dude, I got a Dell". My Dell has been great with no problems whatsoever. Because of a lot of reasons I won't go into here I ended up getting a new laptop that happens to be an HP. Other than a slight overheating problem (awkward placement of fans) it's been fantastic. The price and performance is great and nothings wrong yet. I've had it about 4-5 months so it's not a great endorsement. I'm not sure any of this means anything other than just my experiences but here it is. Hope it helps!

What he said Besides, if you are talking dollars I'd suspect that Unix variants are more commonly used in "Big business" than MS products, therefor more dollars affected - more publicity - etc. I think it's a myth about the virus - it seems unix is much better protected against it. Afterall, what bonehead operating system ties the web browser directly into the heart of the OS?

I would guess something like one month free for every customer you refer who stays for 3 or more months. That could be a bookkeeping nightmare so either one month for every customer your refer up to a limit or one month for every X customers you refer. There are shortcomings to them all as a creative person could scam their way into free service, thus the limit idea. Any other ideas out there?

Bingo! This is probably the single most powerful obstacle to Linux and friends getting the popularity and widespread use they deserve. For instance, I don't even have Office on my laptop but I am making due without it but I do have Macromedia Studio MX that I'll not pay for again unless it's an upgrade. I can make it without it but I'd rather not throw away the money or use a 2nd-choice (to me) editor. MikeJ, I know what you mean about it... big corporation taking over Linux could turn ugly, but on the other hand having to support a bazillion users getting viruses and popups and spyware on Microsoft platform makes me long for the day it happens.

I beat it too... Not too hard once you figure the trick to thinking like a gamer. Of course, having written multiplayer computer games for 6 years helps!

I don't think there is much serious/educated doubt that flavors of Unix are more secure than Windows. The only hold backs are: 1. "Everything" is already on windows. 2. Windows is generally more familiar to users than Linux et al. 3. "We have all this software for Windows and don't want to have to replace it." 4. "We can't live without Software-X and it's only on Windows." 5. "If it's cheap it can't possibly be good." 6. The source of many lawsuits - "All our computers come with Windows already on them." These problems, or at least the perception of the problems by those in charge, are the mountains Linux and other Unix variants must overcome to become the mainstream operating systems they should be. I hope it happens soon!

Indeed, Rob. If a user has a weak password then his site is vulnerable to defacement but there is a wall between the user's sites and the server software. The server passwords are all very secure and although anyone can get hacked if they want in badly enough, there are hundreds [edit: or hundreds of thousands] of other sites that are easier to get into than ours. Hope this helps.
