  1. Just an FYI ... according to copyright.gov: "The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration." It might help you to convince someone who doesn't know any better to stop using your work, but this wouldn't hold up in court.
  2. You. Seriously though, my top five are (in no particular order): Daily Download Distorted View Dawn and Drew Yeast Radio IndieFeed Most of the others I listen to are independent/underground music. I'm so far behind too, I'm listening to shows from a few weeks ago.
  3. Saw it at 12:03 this morning. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I had to go to at least one midnight show; I missed all the other ones. It's a lot better than I and II.
  4. In addition to what earache suggested (in Disk Utility, make sure to Repair Permissions -- you won't be able to check for errors unless you're booted from a CD or external volume), I recommend using a program called MacJanitor. This program runs the clean up and maintenance scripts that are scheduled to run each night but usually don't since most home users shut down their computer. I usually run all every few weeks. Do this stuff before you install anything from the Software Updates, and again after. It's a good habit to get into.
  5. I don't know for certain, but doesn't the line in bold above need to be uncommented?
  6. Photography. Not only taking photos, but I develop black and white at home. Then I spend some time to scan them and either post them on my websites or on photography-based message boards. I also like to experiment with photography. I have quite a few hybrid cameras, and most of them have had some sort of modification done. I guess you can say that I also collect cameras, since I have over two dozen of them. Geekery. A generic hobby, I guess. I like electronic gadgets and spend a lot of time either playing around with them or reading about them.
  7. Well, the Dell is on it's way out, just as soon as it's primary user gets done transferring all the content to the new Powerbook. The HP will be gone just as soon as TiVo comes out with a Mac version of its software that can take care of the TiVoToGo stuff (transferring and watching the shows on the computer). Which probably will be a while. Oh, and The Sims 2 needs to come to the Mac. Other than that - the only two that get real, everyday use are the Powerbooks.
  8. With a Silver, a Deluxe, and a Simple Reseller plan ... I'm pretty close.
  9. Thanks. No photoshop (well, except to size it down). I used my digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 4500) with a fisheye lens attached, zoomed in about halfway.
  10. Here's the home office. Two Powerbooks, an HP, a dual-screen Dell, and a HP Pocket PC are all visiting the TCH website.
  11. I have no idea if this would make a difference, but in the MT configuration I think that the Local Paths should not have a slash after it, and the URLs should. They probably should have an http:// in them, too. So it should look like: Again, I have no idea if this will make any difference. Good Luck.
  12. Thanks for the quick reply, and a reason. The whole thing was just weird; I thought that maybe I was going crazy once I saw them back.
  13. I had a couple of cron jobs set up via cPanel. One to check an e-mail account and update my moblog, and one to publish "Future" posts in my Movable Type photoblog. They were set to run once a week and once a day, respectively. I experienced no problems for many, many months ... until this week. I updated my site over the weekend with a few posts set to "Future" in MT. Yesterday I realized that they had never been published, so after checking the settings in MT I logged into my cPanel and checked the cron jobs. Both of them were gone. Completely. So I redefined the one for Movable Type; I left off the moblog one since I really don't use it anymore. I had posted something in the Backend forum yesterday regarding this issue, but my post went the way of my cron jobs ... it disappeared. So here I am, retyping this out (maybe another forum topic will work). I figured that before I posted this I should double check things ... so I logged into my cPanel again to verify that the MT cron job was still there ... it is ... but with the old settings. Plus, the cron for my moblog is back! Anyone have any clue what the heck is going on?
  14. One other thing I've come across while testing out hotlinking on my sites: make sure you clear your cache first. If you have a copy of the images in your cache, there's a chance that that's why they're showing up for you. I've run myself in circles before trying to figure out why I can see my supposedly unlinkable images on other sites when all it was was a cached image. So clear the cache and then reload the page to make sure for certain that the hotlinking isn't working.
  15. I have way too many passwords (well over 100), between all my websites, the sites I maintain for others, sites I visit, and all my login info on all the machines and sites I use at work. I've been using KeyPass on my Windows machines to keep everything saved. It's freeware, open source, and encrypts your info. It'll also generate random passwords for you, too. The best thing I like about it is that there is a version for Pocket PCs, so whenever I make any changes on either my PC or PPC, I can copy the database file to the other machine and have all my info in both places. On my home machine (OS X) I use PasswordMaster. I tried to use Keychain for a while, but it just took me too long to look something up when I needed it. I'm sure I'd get used to it if I used it more.
  16. I have this problem if I've accessed my MT installation from http://domain.com, instead of using http://www.domain.com (which is what the CGIPath value is set at in the mt.cfg file). I can log in, edit something, save the changes I made, then it'll log me out. Once that happens the URL in the browser is correct (with the www) and after logging in again it won't boot me out if I make and changes or save anything. I'm not sure if this is causing your problem, though.
  17. This happens to me on occasion. Whenever it does happen, it actually had logged me in. All I do is refresh the main gallery page and then it shows me as a logged-in user. I haven't figured out exactly why this happens, but it's a minor issue for me and not worth the effort to troubleshoot. Oh, I just found this on the Gallery FAQ: I verified that my information is correct, but maybe this is the cause of your problem.
  18. I'm currently hosting a friend's sister's website on my reseller account. Her site was recently linked to from a fairly popular design website, and she recently sent out about 500 informational postcards (with 1000 or so being sent out soon), so she's had nearly 900 hits in the past few days. For most sites it probably wouldn't be a problem, but because her site is extremely graphic-intensive (she's an illustrator) her bandwidth has skyrocketed. I've had to up her bandwidth twice today. I have enough available bandwidth on my reseller account to cover whatever she would need in the short term, but I'd prefer not to sacrifice a large chunk of it for her site (especially since she's currently not paying me for hosting). I briefly mentioned that she probably should pay for a virtual hosting account and get her site off of my reseller account, since even the smallest hosting package is more than I could offer her. I know that there are a few ways to transfer an old site over to new hosting, but this really would be the first time I have had to do so. Sooo... my question is: If we were to purchase a virtual hosting account for her website, what does a Cpanel-to-Cpanel transfer copy over? Our main worry is getting her existing mailbox copied over, since she strictly uses the web to read her mail and has a decent amount of saved e-mails (a lot of them regarding work). She does not have her own computer, so downloading everything via an e-mail client is out of the question. Or would we have to restore her site from a full backup to get keep her saved e-mails? Is it even possible (I read a few posts regarding this, but I didn't get a clear answer)?
  19. A year and a half ago I was in the market for a new PC and ended up buying an off-the-shelf HP. I've had virtually no problems with it (just the "normal" Windows issues, and the CD-ROM drive likes to get stuck). I also have an HP PhotoSmart printer that works flawlessly with the PC. I've been using an HP laptop through work for quite a few months now, and so far have run into no problems (well, I have issues with the docking station). I know you asked for views on post-2000 HPs, but I just have to add: my mom is still using the original (un-upgraded) Compaq that she bought in 1995. No problems save for getting her modem and monitor fried during a storm. On the other hand: Prior to my new HP laptop at work, we used Dell laptops for many years. Every single person had some sort of problem pop up. Pretty much all the batteries died (wouldn't hold a charge) within a year. A few of us had the fans quit, and two harddrives died. Now, I know that laptops are different from desktops and generally run into a few more problems due to their design and portability ... but ... over a dozen Dell laptops, all with at least one semi-major problem? Now ... would I buy an HP computer again? Probably not, at least for myself ... but only because I've recently become a Mac convert and wouldn't buy another PC unless necessary. I'd probably recommend HP to people looking for a PC though.
  20. Go figure. After I voted for Windows I got out and get a Mac. Right now I'm in the process of converting; I'm keeping the WinXP tower for gaming, but the Mac (OSX 10.3.5) is going to be my primary. My work laptop runs WinXP Pro.
  21. They're also going to do some filming on the infamous Amstutz "Highway to Nowhere" in Waukegan. I may go to try to catch a glimpse. The remake of "The Amityville Horror" is also being filmed around the Chicago area; Fox Lake, I believe. I was at the extras casting a few weeks ago.
  22. I don't understand how it might be a database issue. The script I'm trying to run works if I call it directly in a browser window, and it also works when I activate it to be called when a visitor views my site. It just won't run via a cron job, giving me permission errors. I would IM you but I'm currently at work and am not allowed.
  23. I am also getting this error on the cron job: I understand that it is a permissions issue, but I cannot chmod the param.inc.php file. I keep getting "Permission Denied." It's currently set at 600. Any idea what I can do? Open a ticket and have the permissions changed?
  24. From what I understand, this patent only applies to the PocketPC interface: On the US Patent site, in the description part of this patent, it appears to specify that this is aimed at mobile computing devices: The patent also seems to state that it's not the action of double-clicking in itself that's patented, but the method of determining how many times or how long a button is pressed for, then launching a different application function depending on that information. Unless I'm totally reading it the wrong way ... which is quite possible.
  25. Thanks muchly, Mr. Mitch!
