TCH-Tim
I know there are a lot of animal lovers around these parts so I thought I would share this. Juneau, my 8-month-old Siberian Husky mix puppy (cute photo attached), was attacked by three pit bulls two days ago. The pit bulls belong to my neighbor 7 houses down. She had left the front door of her house open and when we walked by the dogs came tearing out of the house. Until the attack I had never met the neighbor, never knew she had dogs (because she never walks them), and so I never saw it coming. I know the rule is that you aren't supposed to intervene in a dog fight, but whoever made that rule has never seen his puppy get chewed on by three dogs. I managed to escape with cuts and scratches but Juneau sustained damage to her chest and leg. Oh, and she lost control of her bowels during the fight. I had the pleasure of getting my feces and blood-covered dog home, in my truck, and to the vet. It is probably one of the worst things I have seen in my life. $600 and a lengthy operation later she has tubes sticking out of her in several spots so fluids and puss can drain, she's got a cone on her head, and she's on medication - and as anybody who's ever had to make a dog swallow a pill can tell you, it sucks. She gets to have another operation in a few days to have the tubes removed, and then another week or so to get the stitches out. And let's not forget the emotional trauma. She doesn't want to be alone now and I have a hard time getting her outside to pee. Nevada (and my homeowner's association) has some pretty strict laws about vicious dogs and leash laws in general so the proper authorities have been notified and the slow wheels of justice are moving. I've delivered the vet bill to the woman and hopefully she pays without any lawyers being involved. My dog will be fine and the woman's dogs are fine and she will pay the bill one way or another. But the whole situation is unnecessary and could have been avoided by keeping the door closed or keeping her dogs on a leash. She maintains that her dogs have never hurt a fly, but at the end of the day with certain breeds you can never tell. This is especially true when they are not properly cared for and/or they get the pack mentality going. So please, if you have a dog, of any breed, keep it under control. Even if it is trained you just never know. A leash only costs a few dollars and can prevent a mountain of headache and heartache. If the dogs had gone after me and not Juneau, I would be in the hospital (at best), the dogs would be euthanized, and the woman would be in jail. She said they never attacked before, so when they came running out it really was a question of who they were going after. If you can't afford a leash or don't know how to use one, ask your vet and I'm sure they will help you out. And if you don't have the time to take care of your dogs properly and make sure they are happy and healthy, please call your local no-kill animal shelter so they can find the dogs a good owner. BoxersRule
Tim, I'm so sorry poor Juneau was attacked but thankful you weren't hurt. You were both very lucky. I hope your pup recovers quickly and it sounds like physically, she will. You're right in that emotionally, it will probably take a lot longer and be something that may affect her all of her life. It will take some time & training to get her past this. The woman with the pits is responsible for the vet bills and should count her blessings that Juneau will recover and wasn't a 2 legged kid. I have boxers (surprise! ) and have also witnessed an attack on one of my furkids. It's horrifying. I'll be thinking of Juneau & sending her lots of good vibes. TCH-Don
Tim I am sorry to hear this I pray Juneau will be ok. I know it will take time for Juneau to get over this. It's a shame that all pet owners are not more responsible. I see a lot ot this and it makes me sick.
TCH-Thomas
When I hear about people like that woman or other animals hurting each other I get so I am not gonna say what I think about the woman or the pitbulls, so I will only say that Juneau will need alot of love & help more than ever now and I know she is good hands too. Take care now both Tim and Juneau, you will be in my thoughts. Let us know if you need anything. - Thomas, Jessica, Piggie & Gissa

boxturt
Horrible. I am so glad that Juneau will be ok but it will take a long time for her and you to get over this. I have serious issues with people (?) that do not know (or care) to take care of their pets so I won't go there. We wish you both the best. marie b.
This literally broke my heart; I'm actually crying here. I know what it's like to see your dog hurt but not to this degree, so I can only imagine how you feel. Thinking of you both.
makaveli
Read that again and 'never knew she had dogs (because she never walks them)' ... that sucks, you cant have a dog and not take them for a walk. around an estate near me there is loads of dogs that people simply let them wonder around, and it does my head in, there is this mean lookin' boxer that jumps into peoples gardens and makes "a mess" everywhere.. what if kids were playing in that garden, no collar on it no ID tags or nothing. its a disgrace! cajunman4life
Sorry to hear about this Tim. As a fellow dog owner, I wish you both the best. On a side note, it's amazing what people will do for their pets. I remember spending over $80 for a 5 minute visit to the vet when my dog had diarrhea. Which is odd considering I've been sick as a dog (no pun intended) for a week and still won't go to a doctor. Take good care of your pup. TCH-Tim
We went to the vet today and got Juneau's drain tubes removed and put a few more stitches in. She seems more interested in her chew toys than the cone on her head, and she's finally using the restroom outside again after three days of attacking my carpets. Only a few more days and she should be back to normal. The owner of the attacking dogs came by today to set up a payment plan to reimburse me for the costs and was very apologetic about the whole thing. The dog that they believe instigated the whole thing has been relocated to another home for the time being until they figure out what they are going to do with him. It's nice to see that some stories can have a happy ending without lawyers being involved. Thanks everybody for your positive thoughts. musicfrisk
Sorry to hear that took place, as dogs certainly do belong on leashes. But what about the people who have dog allergies whose lives you recklessly threaten regardless of a leash or not every day? What about the rights of these innocent people whose lives you threaten daily just by owning an unnecessary dog? How some people can be so sensitive about a dog attack and so insensitive about the life of a fellow human is a sad commentary on the decline of our civilization - just like SUVs... The dog that they believe instigated the whole thing has been relocated to another home for the time being until they figure out what they are going to do with him. That's actually surprising, given my own experiences with the owners of dogs who attacked me or my Jack Russell. They usually got violent and accused me of being in the wrong just by being on the sidewalk, walking him. Great news. Edited June 10, 2006 by marie b. TCH-Tim
If it makes you feel better my dog isn't allowed to walk up to strangers without being invited, she doesn't go to non-dog peoples' houses, and she doesn't go in other peoples' yards. She doesn't go to public parks (misc. unincorporated fields and trails yes) and she doesn't go to open-air events like concerts or fairs. I think kids are unnecessary (and some of them arguably a greater threat to society than dog dander) but people keep having them. I have a dog instead. makaveli
you can't leave kids in the garden all day and leave them a bowl of water. so i agree
Deverill
Tim, sorry to hear about your and your puppy's ordeal! It's small consolation that they are being decent about handling it, but at least there is that. I'm glad Juneau's doing better! About allergies... wow. Should Mr. Peanut not go out because people are allergic to him? Seriously, sorry you have allergies and such, but to suggest there should be no pet owners because they are unnecessary is just a sad thing. Pets bring so much joy to so many people. The alternative is to kill every dog out there - oh, and don't forget cats - people are allergic to them too. Oh, and don't forget smokers... we gotta kill them too. See, it's just too extreme. I'm sympathize with those who have allergies, but what's the best solution? Are there any meds that can reduce/remove the problem? (Except pit bulls - they may indeed be unnecessary )

Samrc
So sorry you and your dog had to go through this ordeal. That pup is truly lucky to have you as the owner/caretaker. Glad to hear the good news on her recovery and your neighbor's attitude.
