I feel like Neo in the Matix when he said, "I know Kung Foo." After reading the replies here and then googling "htaccess" and reading some htaccess guides: "I know htaccess." (It's funnier in my head with Keanu Reeves' voice.) Thanks, I will be adding Options -Indexes to my .htaccess file. Still curious about questions 2, 3, and 4 and why TCH chooses the default of fancy indexes.

In the CPanel 7 User Guide 1.2 at this location, http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/index.html, there is the following information: Question 1: Theses descriptions make no sense to me. For "No Indexes" it says any browser "will see" an index list. For "Standard" and "Fancy" it says that it "prevents browsers from viewing" the index. Isn't this backwards??? Question 2: I notice that the default for all of my website folders/directories is apparently the "Fancy" option. Isn't this less secure than having the default option be no indexes? Question 3: I want to set all my folders/directories to no indexes. Is there a way to do this globally instead of having to set every single folder and subfolder individually? Question 4: Is there any reason not to set all my folders/directories to no indexes?

I Google searched for people using TCH and MovableType* and of the ones I found I sent an email to the ones with the most sophisticated sites (thus likely to be most knowledgeable and not a TCH customer just by accident) and asked them about their combined TCH/MT experience. All responses were positive and with one, I exchanged several very helpful and informative messages wherein it was brought up that he was a TCH reseller and he made me the above described offer. * I use MovableType and my old host's lack of support and TCH being MT friendly (along with great support and reasonably prices) is why I am a new member of the TCH family.

As a 3 day old customer of TCH, let me say that I am very happy, but let me play skeptic due to the fact that I was so abused by my prior host. Just how do you calculate "uptime" and "downtime"? It seems like an easy concept...to a lay person it is when everything is working right on server is uptime. All other time is downtime. Is there a more technical calculation? My old host had a hard drive failure. The days, actually weeks, it took for me to complain about my site not working and to convince them they had a problem instead of their stupid customer, all counted as "uptime" because other people's sites on that drive were apparently working. They swapped hard drives, which apparently counted as downtime. But, as soon as the new drive got spinning they put a green light on their server status page and changed the status to uptime despite the fact that they didn't yet have all the software associated with the drive loaded and configured. Perhaps a simple all basic html nothing fancy site was working, but anything more complicated, cgi/database/php/etc was not working. It took another half day for my site to get working...and despite my and presumably other sites not working, the server was shown as working fine. So, given that example, I ask again: what is "uptime" and what is "downtime"?

...so what about my method of putting <p align=center> before my images?

So, is this prohibited action the same thing as "Addon Domains" discussed in the cpanel documentation but for which there is no icon in cpanel?

When trying to access the TCH Family Only forum it asks for a password. I have re-read all my emails from TCH, I am a member and have a new site with TCH and have accessed cpanel but somewhere I missed the secret handshake to get into the member (customer) only forum. Help.

Sport . . . . . . . . . . . I'm so ashamed...it was a Spice Girls thing...oh, the horror. It couldn't have been tarragon or cilantro or even Dune...no, I have to go with a fluff girl pop group. I hope my son never sees this thread.

http://www.danzfamily.com I scored a 7.7 for whatever that's worth. Their biggest criticism is that I'm in violation of the British Disability Discrimination Act. I'm not going to lose any sleep over that.

What Happens To Email When Transferring Hosts?

Also, the images for NeoMail and Horde are over the wrong links...or the wrong images are over the right links. http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/webmailpage.htm -
What Happens To Email When Transferring Hosts?

Oh great...you offer two choices for web-based email...are you guys for real? You know that just makes it harder for me. Just FYI: the links for the two webmail sites do not work on your page: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/webmailpage.htm They have some percentage thing in the link. It will work if you take that off the address. The second one then redirects to a new address. -
What Happens To Email When Transferring Hosts?
DWD replied to DWD's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
OK, after some research and trial and error and this tool for DNS lookup: http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php, I was able to find the "number" of my website and the different "number" for my email. Right now I can access my email (soon to be my old email) by the name mail.domain-name.com and by the number http://12.34.567.89:8383 that I found through the lookup. Question: As I understand it, after I change my website pointer, the name will soon direct me to my new TCH mail while the old number will direct me to my old email? New emails will then start to come to the new site. Question: Not really a concern but what if I try and send an email from the old site after the domain pointer is changed? I will download everything off the old site into Outlook at home and start fresh with the TCH web client. Question: I've been using Gmail a lot lately and one thing I like about it is that if I have to compose a long email, it doesn't automatically log me out. With my old domain name web-based email it would log me out and when I when hit send it would redirect me to the login page and the long email would be forever lost. Does this happen with the TCH web-based email client? Thanks. [i think I'll make a signature that says this support forum is the reason I'm a TCH customer!] -
So, I've signed up for my account at TCH. This amazing support forum played no small part in my decision. I now understand the process of setting up my website here then transferring the pointer to the new location. But, what about my old email. My wife and I use a web-based system so that we can access it from anywhere. We obviously have a ton of messages and addresses stored. Will we lose access to email at my old host? Will that access be lost when I change the domain pointer? Will I have access to both new and old email systems (old until my old host plan runs out)? I imagine this is the case, but that I would have to access my old email via an IP address instead of mail.domain-name.com. I feel like I don't even know what questions to ask. What other questions should I be asking to assure a smooth transition? I don't mind losing my email, but I can't afford to lose my wife's email...she'll kill me!

Thanks...that does make sense. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to go to my current host and give them another chance to **** with me. My site has been down since last week, oh, but their sever is technically up after replacing a drive...nothing runs on it...but its up...so "green light" on there server status page. Opps...rambling, sorry.

"You can then change your DNS settings to the name servers here." Could you explain this as if you were talking to a 6th grader. Change exactly how? By doing exactly what?

OK, so I've checked with some registrars...Go Daddy for instance...and they don't do what I call simple static pages. I have found a TCH reseller that will host my three static pages for a total of $30/year provided that I host my own images which I have no problem doing. So, I am now contemplating going with this option which appears to be the best solution.
-
OK, "parking" is making more sense now. I'll head over to some registrars to see what options/fees they offer. I really want simply but individualized static pages that will sort of "hold their own" in the cyber world for my unused domain names with just a simple link to my one main website front page. Subdirectories/subdomains are not an issue for me. I don't really want to pay to have them separately hosted since they will have insignificant traffic/bandwidth and require just a simple index page for storage. Thank you.
-
I've searched and couldn't find the answer...maybe it's too simple, but bear with me as there are a lot of people (I'm just saying that to make myself feel good) who don't understand the details of parking. Mostly, I'm concerned with my third question, as I couldn't find info on customizing parking pages, but would also like 1 and 2 confirmed along with prices.) Suppose I have a full hosted active site on TCH: website-one.com and then I get another domain name: website-two.com, do I understand correctly that the following are my options? And, what does each cost? 1) Forwarding: if forwarding is set up, when people type in website-two.com they are automatically redirected to website-one.com and in the address box it will say website-one.com so they will know that they are there. Is this correct? What is the fee? 2) Forwarding with Masking: if forwarding with masking is set up, when people type in website-two.com, the website-one.com site will come up on their screen but the address box will say website-two.com so they will not know that it is essentially pulling the files from website-one.com. Is this correct? What is the fee? 3) Static Park Page: if I do not want to set up any kind of forwarding, I can just have a static park page that comes up when people type in website-two.com and that page can have or not have a normal click-on-me link to website-one.com. Is this correct. What is the fee? And, what are the limitations for customizing this page assuming any graphics are pulled off of website-one.com? 4) Other Options: are there any other options besides 1, 2 and 3 above for dealing with parked pages, besides doing nothing and getting a page cannot be displayed error. Thank you very much, I can already tell TCH has the best support in the business. DWD
