  1. Welcome to the forums, s010!
  2. You're right, David. Sorry, I should have read mangarevolution's post more carefully.
  3. I think you can call getimagesize() with a simple filesystem path and it will simply get the image directly from the filesystem instead of generating an HTTP request for it and spending some bandwidth
  4. I was just going to say what Mike already said. If he used that John-etc (it's probably the best known password cracker, btw ) it means he had access to the password files. All you have to do is remove him the possibility of accessing the password files and I'm pretty sure he won't be able to get into your site again. If he does, then you're probably dealing with someone who has a bit more knowledge than usual nad that will require some other measures. But I wouldn't expect that
  5. Welcome to the forums, mattmey!
  6. The message says it's still under construction.

    Linux

chroniker, I also tried Xandros but I didn't like it that much. It's too... I don't know... dumb? I mean, it tries to be as easy to use as Windows but it just has this "dumb" feeling about it... it looks as if it was made by a bunch of 10 years old kids, who love lots of colors, nice rounded graphics, lots of pretty stuff... but in the and, it doesn't add up to a nice, smooth experience. :|
  8. LOL
  9. ostrich99, if you can, make it a "subdirectory"... ok let me explain this better: instead of making it work with www.domain.com/subdir make it work with www.domain.com/sub/dir. This way you can create a rewrite rule that redirects only those "special" links and leaves all the rest alone, while creating a redirect rule for www.domain.com/subdir would have to catch every link going to your website.

    Linux

I also recommend Ubuntu. They have a LiveCD version, too. You may also want to try Fedora Core or, as others suggested, Mandriva (former Mandrake).
  11. Welcome to the forum, Pierce.
  12. Don't count on that, Thomas. Here in Portugal, government people are amongst the most ignorant of all, especially when it comes to computer related stuff... EDIT: It's testing for the "Mozilla Windows shell: protocol handler vulnerability (moz250180)" in a browser they detected was running on Linux (I ran the 'short' test)... are you sure they know what they're doing?
  13. I believe Andy already said it all, so I'll just welcome you: Welcome to the forums, Jon! Hope to welcome you to the family soon, too
  14. Sorry, Thomas, I never used SMF so I can't help you much but if you can't figure it out, let me know (PM or IM me) and I'll download it and take a look.
  15. Imagemagik is more used on *nix systems, so it's not that strange that there aren't many people in the forums knowing how to do that. I certainly don't, so I can't help you, sorry
  16. I know eGroupware works OK and it looks pretty good. Never used phpGroupware, though.
  17. Annie, you should probably restart the installation process. I never used phpwiki but almost all other scripts I've used just give me headaches if they're not successfully installed at first. If you still can't do it, PM me and I'll try to help you.
  18. Simple answer: no frames whatsoever. Longer answer: Google search for "why not use frames"
  19. Hi Paul. As I said in the other thread where you posted about Drupal, it is the only CMS that almost convinced me to use it. I think it could be improved a lot but, depending on what you want to do with it, it's probably the best choice, right now. The Mambo folks are also going to release a new 5.0 version soon (or so I hope), which will have the big missing piece in Mambo - Access Control Lists. The possibility of creating, edit and remove user groups and assign them roles and privilieges is something that I can't imagine a CMS without. When they implement that, I don't know if I won't change my mind about Drupal and Mambo... I just LOVE that admin interface On the other hand, Drupal is technically superior (better code) and although I still haven't tried to write modules for either of the two systems, I believe Drupal is a bit easier to use on that front. The same goes for templates. Both of them are really simple to use - and it also depends on the structure you create for your site, of course. At the administration level, I prefer Mambo's admin panel. It's just... beautiful Although I think it gets a little confusing dealing with modules, components and mambots. Drupal only has modules. Period. Simple, huh?
  20. Great! Let us know how it goes, Thomas
  21. Yes, there are localized versions of OpenOffice. They have a page dedicated to that, with a big link on the left side of the new site (good looking, by the way. very nice). Not sure why the swedish version was in english, though... :|
  22. Thanks, John! I've been using OpenOffice since it's pre-1.0 days, so yes, this interests me I already had 1.9.94 but I guess I'll have to download 1.9.95 just to satisfy the geek in me By the way, if anyone is tired of paying hundreds of $$$ for restricted and buggy software (although MS Office is not one of the worst MS products), you should try OpenOffice!

    Firewall

Ayman and David, yes, Firestarter is just a frontend to iptables and yes, all linux firewalls (at least that I know of) are based on iptables. There may be some other products that implement a different firewall but iptables is the only "official" firewall in the Linux Kernel. Curtis, glad to know you got it working and you like it

    Firewall

I tried Guarddog last night and I didn't like it much. Firestarter is much more intuitive.

    Firewall

Firestarter is probably the easiest firewall tool there is for Linux (I don't know Guarddog and it also looks pretty simple, so I may be wrong). It has a configuration wizard, which is pretty good and lets you setup firewall rules in less than a minute (if you already know what the various screens say, it takes less than 15 seconds ). There's also Firewall Builder, which is more advanced than Firestarter (and far more complex) but I haven't used it for quite some time and I don't even remember it well enough to be able to compare it to others. My advice is: give them all a try and decide which one is best for your needs
