Mike, Thunderbird is a standalone e-mail client. It used to be part of the Mozilla suite but they separated them. Now you have the Firefox browser and the Thunderbird e-mail client (and they also have a calendar app coming, called Sunbird). The Mozilla suite (which has a browser and an e-mail client) still exists and it's still Mozilla's flagship product but in a not so distant future, it will be replaced by Firefox and Thunderbird.

Hi Mike. First of all, let me tell you there's a newer version of Firefox available (0.9.3) which fixes some security problems, so I'd recommend you upgrade your instalation. As for the sound problem, if I'm not mistaken, Firefox by itself is not supposed to have any sounds (like the «tick» IE does when you click a link), so I'm assuming you mean you get no sound when using some plugin or web pages with background music. Am I correct? Can you provide a bit more information?

My suggestion is that you force yourself to use Firefox for a few days. Explore its funtionalities, browse the extension repositories and see what you can add to your new browser to make your experience even better. In the end, draw your own conclusions. If you're happy with it, great, make the switch. If not, keep using IE. Edit: And I forgot to mention what Bruce said. Since (unfortunately) you can't remove IE from your Windows instalation, you will always be able to use it to view those outdated IE-only web sites.

It's not about Firefox alone but about a better browsing experience. As for question 2, there are several things you won't be able to do with Firefox that you can do with IE, like infecting your computer with viruses, letting your browser execute programs for you just because it thinks you want it to, being swamped with pop-up windows... OK, seriously, the only thing I don't think you can do with Firefox that you can do with Mozilla is use ActiveX controls. But in the end, this isn't such a bad thing, since ActiveX controls are rarely used (very rarely, nowadays) and they pose one of the biggest security threats in IE. You should ask instead "what CAN I do with Firefox that IE doesn't even dream about?" Thomas, look at it this way: hundreds and hundreds of people are moving away from IE and chosing other browsers, better, safer, more recent, more feature rich than IE. Even here on TCH family forums there are several people that are not computer geeks, who changed to Firefox, gave up on IE and are quite happy with it. So ask yourself: is it a conspiracy or is it really true that Firefox is better than IE?

Samantha, the first solution that comes to my mind is: don't use IE, use Firefox But since you probably won't do that, try saving the file with the .bmp extension like IE wants but then rename the file and change it's extension to .gif, .jpg, or whatever the original is. IE is probably not changing the format of the file, just it's extension. Even if you don't change the extension and load the image in Irfanview, it should report the image as a GIF or JPEG or whatever the original is, because the "interior" of the file wasn't changed, just the filename. Rob, are you talking about upgrading Firefox? If so, I don't think you have to uninstall it, just install over the previous version you have. I know that upgrading from 0.8 to 0.9 couldn't be done this way, because lots of things changed and the browser files could get messed up but I have been upgrading mine by installing over the previous one, since 0.9 came out, and it works just fine.

Yes, there is. TCH servers are running Red Hat Linux, which follows the Linux Standards Base, so you may check their site and get that info from them

By the way, check out the Mozilla website, Firefox 0.9.3 has been out for some time Thomas, If you don't use IE, I'd say you'll be close to elimintaing 95% of the threats. This is assuming you also get rid of IE's evil companion, Outlook Express. That's where all the viruses (worms) come from. If you stop using Outlook Express, you'll do yourself a favor probably even bigger than if you stop using IE. Of course the best move is to stop using both Unfortunately, since it is impossible to completely remove IE from Windows, I guess you'll always be at some risk. If you're using the cPanel version, it may be a bug due to that version being outdated. If so, you could try upgrading to the latest version and see if it fixes the problem.

You can do it by using the error_reporting() function or inside a .htaccess file. Since you're using a pre-made CMS, the first option isn't a very good one. On the other hand, I never used the second option, so I'm not quite sure how you could do that. It should be as easy as having something like php_value error_reporting 2047 in the .htaccess file. You'll need to translate the error codes you want PHP to report into their numeric counterparts. Glad to know you're not part of The Legion (just kidding ) As for the DW extension, I don't know how it works on the Mac but the Windows version of Macromedia products has a little utility called Extension Manager, from which you can install, uninstall and mess around with all the extensions you have installed for their products.
