I use Linux (Fedora Core 2) and sometimes, just to play a game, Windows XP. I think I would be an OS X user if I'd have a Mac but right now I need Linux and a PC because of college and I can't afford a second computer system :\ Which means that if someone wants to offer me a PowerMac, one of those new iMacs or a 17" PowerBook, be my guest

Thomas, I have no idea and quite honestly, I couldn't care less. I'm used to this kind of behaviour from MS. That's why I don't trust them or their software.

Andy is right, Macromedia Contribute is a local application (meaning it runs on your local computer) and interacts with your account via FTP. As long as you have an FTP account on your server, you can use Contribute. So there's no problem with using it with your account on TCH I must war you, though, that Contribute is quite a messy piece of software. It will create directories as it pleases and will not ask you about the file/directory structure you want your site to have. If later on you decide to move away from Contribute, you'll have a pretty hard time reorganizing everything. I know, I've been there when I had to remake the website for my previous school... Mad!!! Moving for organization.

Darry, the best (actually, the only) way for you to get this solved is through the help desk, as the tech support staff are the only ones who have the knowledge and access level to answer your question and solve the problem.

microsoft.com doesn't work with Mozilla? What exactly doesn't work? I can see they have a new cool look on the site but it all seems to work fine, here. Unless it's something deeper in the site, like the MSDN documentation. I remember that didn't work with Opera or Mozilla, some time ago.

Well, thanks for the info I don't think permalinks make much sense, though. I mean, if I write something on my blog, it gets stored in the database with an unique ID, right? If I want to read that message again, I simply have to use an URL like "show_post.php?id=34". Either the people who thought about permalinks got it all wrong or I'm missing something, here... OK, so I decided to follow the same trend as the rest of the web and get myself a blog. Instead of going with one of the many blog services, I installed WordPress on my account and I'm exploring it - for the 10th time I had already installed it once on my local machine but I always thought it had too many things for a simple blog. I mean, I only want to post my thoughts on a web page and, possibly, let people comment them. Why do I need all those trackback links and pingback things? I figured that if everybody uses them, they must be usefull for something. So my question to you, fellow TCH bloggers, is: what are trackbacks, pingbacks and other things you may find necessary to explain to a newbie in the blogging world? Thanks

Well, after some serious searching on the web and asking a few CSS geeks about this, I concluded that it's impossible to do what you want. The transparency is inherited and that's it. There's that IE workaround and I've seen something about a Safari workaround that used to work on older versions but nothing for Mozilla, since it strictly follows W3's standard on this matter. The only way I can think of is to use absolute positioned elements. Have you tried that? It may or may not be possible, depending on the layout you're working with but it's the only way that comes to my mind.
