  1. Ok, I think I can help settle some of the confusion. First of all, the LINK: feature of Google is messed up. Some argue that it only returns a page if the PageRank is 4 or more. Others say that it's hit or miss even then. Others say it only shows pages that feed page rank to you. I think I agree with the theory that it's just broke and/or Google's messing with SEO's. Also, the emailriddler text is in a javascript piece of code. Google (nor any SE I know of) will render the Javascript. They basically just skip over it from what I understand. For example, the search ["Contact Saginaw" site:www.yoursite.com] does not return any hits either. I think it's because it's Javascript and not that it is simply hidden. I know one SEO spam technique is to load up keyword phrases into normal HTML comments so they obviously check them. Hope it helps a little. It's really interesting about the link versus robots.txt file though. Thanks for sharing your findings!
  2. Happy National Day / Flag Day to you all! Patriotism is awesome!
  3. Submitting to directories is a great first step. Do a search on "Art directories" or something a little more specific to your type of art if applicable. Also, I would look for a cool-site-of-the-day type of thing for artists. I'm sure there are some that would hilight your pieces from time to time. You could make some of your art available for use on something like Webshots which would bring links to you. Use the search engines to your benefit. Look for art communities or art resources or art showcases etc.
  4. Sometimes the other end will return the entire message including the headers. If this happens you can see that the original email came from tnoheu@****** [209.99.109.92] or whatever. For your own peace of mind you can confirm that it's not TCH's IP address. Other than that there's nothing to glean from your posted message - it just doesn't give the details you need. As for stopping it, it's like stopping me from sending you an email from a bazillion different email accounts I have. A bounceback is just like an original email so it's not able to be blocked unless you start filtering out all messages that say "not deliverable" or some other string in them.
  5. I think I'm missing your point, Annie. Google doesn't care what the words are used in a link - if it's a link it will follow it. Why would the link to "webmaster" disqualify it from being followed by Google any more than a link named "Free beer tomorrow" would? Also, you speak of hidden links that Google doesn't see... can you give an example of one somewhere so I could understand what you mean? I had not heard of this functionality of Google and would like to know as much about it as I can. Thanks.
  6. It can also occur at what seems random. I have a site that for 2 weeks has been getting from 50-100 of these a day. It is dropping off now but was very annoying for that time. I personally believe that the spammers are reaping web domains from the internet just to add credibility to their junk. Would you open a "hi there" from bob@oeuthkr.com or would you be more likely to open "Hi there" from quce@grandslamkw.com. (Probably neither, right? ) I had the helpdesk techs double check just to make sure my client wasn't infected or something (I'm a reseller) but they said it was just spam bouncing. It does suck and unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it but filter "delivery failed" and it's brethren from our mail boxes in cpanel.
  7. Sorry to sound impatient, but how much longer are we going to beat this horse? The bottom line is if a server starts choking, Bill and his team will look into it. If they find a script on your account that's causing it they will either terminate the script or shut down the entire account. They won't look through your account looking for thought crimes or nasty rule infractions - they will look at the processes running on the machine and find out which ones are misbehaving. If you and I were on the same server and I had a runaway script wouldn't you expect him to do the same to me? I sure would! As for notice... they will warn if it's a moderate problem but if it's hurting the other clients on that server they'll suspend and email you about it. If you don't check your email often then yes, you will be down for awhile. I'm sure you could change your contact email to an email-enabled cell phone if it's that vital you get instant notification but they will only take normal and reasonable actions to let you know what's happening and again, protecting the other clients on that server will take priority. If you don't do bad scripts you'll never have to worry about it! I read a statistic that said 80% of things people worry about never happen... I'd submit that this is one of them. I'm glad you're interested in following the rules but they have been spelled out as well as can be expected considering the subjectiveness of what's a burden on the server. If it's truly a big concern of yours I'd suggest a dedicated server account. You can pretty much run the CPU into the ground and effectively take yourself down and they won't touch your account.
  8. Well, it's not as easy with parked domains as it would be with separate domains. In fact, here's a newsletter that Google turned up that talks about one way to do it: www.highrankings.com/issue060.htm#seo If you try it while it is parked you'll create a loop redirecting your real site to your real site and it could get ugly. Hopefully someone else will have another way to do it. Maybe the techs can do something on their end too? It's outside my knowledge base.
  9. Short answer: Head Guru, Bill. I was with a lousy host that went down for 2 days and was in other forums denying it. The nerve! Anyway, I went to FindMyHosting.com and put in what I wanted - reseller, php, awesome uptime, etc. When the results came up I went through each of them. It went something like this: Ugly Duh No way Spammer heaven Yuck! Hmmm. When I got to Hmmm I checked the reviews on it. There were a couple hundred and I read through every one of them. They were all very good except a handful. Those bad ones went something like "Waaah I was kicked off and I didn't do anything!" and the reply from this guy was I knew I loved this guy and when I found out he was the owner I was sold! Anyone who has scruples and stands by them has to be pretty good and with the cost, reliability, customer service and, very importantly, the family I signed up right then. I only wish I had gotten the 1 year for the cost of 11 months deal!
  10. Great job. I really like the design, nice and colorful but not distracting. The only thing is that if your screen's the wrong size there's a bit of "jumping around" of the box when it tries to center in Firefox. Nice look and you're right, your other sites look much nicer than the old home site.
  11. If that 's the only thing then tell the billing department via the helpdesk that you need to change the billing. There's no need to cancel the whole account just to switch cards. If you have already submitted the ticket I'd suggest a new one that references the number on the first one and then maybe IM one of the techs so they can cancel the first one.
  12. Jason, Welcome to your new home and family! Thanks so much for the kind words. The tech guys do an awesome job around here and it's great to see someone actually enjoy the experience again after being burned in the past. I'm just glad they let me hang around as a moderator in the forums!

  14. But it's a dry heat. (Yeah, right!) We have a natural swamp cooler here. Being a 2 mile by 4 mile island we are totally surrounded by water. The best thing is that this water is brought to us by the Gulf stream which comes from way south of here. What's good about that? When it's hot here it's cold there and vice versa. That hot/cool water keeps us nicely between 42 and 98 as the temp extremes. It is pretty miserable in the summer when the sun is beating down and it's 86% humidity and there is no wind though.
  15. The log file is named after your domain. If it's a something.com domain name then it looks like a MS-DOS file but it's not. Just rename it to .TXT and it will open in any text editing program, such as notepad. Also remember what Thomas said, it's not really a "something went wrong" error. It's just saying "You asked for the last half of the file and you got it." This is indeed what the download helpers do and it may well be a 40MB download that someone dropped off half way through and then resumed.
  16. My previous host was down for 2 days and went on other webhosting forums denying that he was down! Talk about nerve!
  17. Hi BlackCat, SuperTchJim isn't here but I'll help out the best I can. The use of tables for alignment will not stop a site from being shown on Google. The very worst it can do is add more junk (<TR><TD></TD></TR> tags) so that your keywords and phrases are not as much of the whole picture as they would be without them. The only other thing is if you cram keywords into the table tags but I am sure that's not an issue for you. The most likely cause of the one site disappearing is if Google sees two pages that look almost the same it will assume they are doorway pages and will choose only one to use in the results of searches. Usually it is the one with the most links to it but not necessarily. This is true of parked domains too, sometimes. Especially as in your case where you have links from other sites to both your addresses. Currently you have 17 pages under the .net and 8650 pages under .it listed on Google. You also have your .net site linked on 14 other sites but the .it address is linked from 8770 other sites. This will make .it take higher place than .net. You could change one page so it doesn't have the same content as the other and it should show up again. Remember, Google doesn't look much at colors and font sizes and such to see if they are alike, it just looks at the words on the page. If you abandon the .it domain make sure you put a Permanent Redirect in the .htaccess so Google knows you moved and will transfer pagerank to the new page. Also, it is best if you have links from other sites if they change to the new address. With the redirect you will have time to complete this but one day you'll want them to point to the right page without the redirect. Hope it helps!
  18. Another benefit of a site map is that it puts a person "one click" away from wherever they wish to be on your site. That's good for spiders too because they will more quickly find the less prominent content that may otherwise be burried. (Speaking generically, I've not done any in-depth study of your layout and structure.)
  19. Glad you're safe, Tracy. I hope I don't have any exciting weather news being as how it would most likely be a hurricane. Hurricane season started yesterday and we are the most likely spot in the US to be affected by them. <sigh> I am familiar with the tornado experience. I was a weather spotter for the Civil Emergency Services because I was a Ham radio operator and they knew our equipment was more durable than theirs. Fortunately here there are often tornados but they are in the form of waterspouts. Because of the water they are very unstable and rarely hit land and if they do the lack of water to them usually makes them fall apart immediately. Florida is the lightening capital of the world but we don't get so much here on the island. A couple of storms have been spectacular though. Heat advisory because of low humidity - interesting. It's like swimming here when you walk outside so it's not a problem for us - heat index is 90 at 8:00 am but it has never been over 98 degrees here either so it's a mixed blessing. Everyone stay safe, drink lots of water and be aware of your body's needs. It's easy to get hurt in extreme weather. Especially the heat which is deceptive.
  20. I have a bunch of pages that I can not put Google Adwords on because it will rob me of business. You know, it's like my charter fishing pages - the ads Google serves up are for charter fishing boats which is exactly what I don't want on my site. I read an article and applied a bit of my own resourcefullness to it and came up with this usage for Adwords: Again using my charter fishing site for the example. The captain is all about fishing and doesn't do dive trips to the reef or snorkeling trips. What I did was to create a page that says nothing about fishing... it focuses on the great reef diving we have, many snorkeling adventures, etc. It also says that we do not do these kinds of trips but the ads "over there" will help you find a great boat for that. Benefits? 1. Goodwill from the customers. If they have a friend looking to fish they may recommend us. 2. Goodwill from the other businesses in the area. If someone walks in looking to fish they may also recommend us. 3. Adwords revenue - there is a percentage of the dive boat's advertising dollar coming back to us so we can offset the cost of our own adword campaign. 4. We become a step closer to being an authority in the search engine's eyes. They really like sites that are authorities because the searchers can find what they want quicker. The next time you are looking at your site, think about something you don't do and design a page optimized for that activity or service and add some advertisements there to bring in a few dollars for your own advertising campaign. Above all, make sure it makes sense to talk about it! It would be totally stupid if this site says "Oh yeah, we don't do computer programming either!" The platinum rule of website design and SEO is "If it makes sense to your visitors it's ok... if not then don't do it." (I just made that up so don't look for any quotes of it... yet.) Enjoy!
  21. Paranoia or realization of the possibilities presented? Isn't it the same sometimes? Unfortunately, I am not sure that government is the driving force in what I see as a "possible future". They are indeed participants but the ones I see making this happen are the corporations. They are the ones that have access to the information that can make the world a scary place to live. Regarding new blood in DC? I think instead of new blood we need to get cooperative blood. As much as it pains me to say it, I think a government that's all Democrats would be better than what it is now - the government for the most part is paralyzed by partisan motivations rather than the good of the nation. When folks do get off their butts and do something, like President Bush did (right, wrong or indifferent), the rest of the political house of cards rushes to reestablish the tethers so that they can maintain their little empires. The point I originally made was that this collection of information sounds way-cool but it can be used in an extremely vile manner as well. Perhaps we should be thinking about it now and making sure that never happens instead of waking up one day with the thought-police knocking on the door or the firemen searching for our secret book stash. (Apologies to the Politically Correct group but fire-fighter doesn't work in this sentence. )
  22. First thing to always remember is that PHP is executed on the server so the end result is all the browsers or spiders ever see. Javascript, however, is the opposite. There are several spider "simulators" on the internet that will show you their interpretation of what the spiders see. Most are the same info and are pretty reliable. One I use is www.seotoolkit.co.uk/spider_viewer.asp for no particular reason other than it is the first one I came across and liked so I stayed with it. Using that tool I can see many links, some repeats, but at a casual glance it seems nothing has been "left out" so you should be safe.
  23. Or he will say "Hey, we are below budget - let's turn on Thomas' light to get more of his money!" True, this is just a promotion, but if we become familiar with everyone knowing everything about us then where would it stop? Imagine, you're on your way to dinner and your boss stops as you leave your car and gives you a new rush project... sometimes it's nice to get lost. Even if you're doing nothing wrong, do you want to have to answer to the police why you drive past a known crack house 3 times a day? I don't want them asking even if it is because they let a crack house operate between my home and my favorite chinese restaurant. It's a needless hassle. There are a billion scenarios where this could be used badly. Many of which have been on TV or at the movies. Is it going to happen this year? No. Next decade? Who knows. Besides, as a Bible believing Christian it concerns me that we are moving toward a cashless economy and a unified government (the EU)... but let's limit any debate to the big brother effect rather than arguing religious outlooks. Obligatory web hosting angle: What if every email you got was related to your habitual spending patterns. Example - (totally made up) imagine I'm an alcoholic and Budweiser sees that I've enrolled in AA and quit buying beer. Do I really NEED a bazillion "cheap beer" coupons in my email, popups for a nice cold Miller Light with less carbs or whatever? (I'm not a beer drinker so I don't know if that's the right company.) Then when I'm driving down the road, just before the package store comes into sight the commercial comes on the radio for "that party feeling - buy beer". I'm about to skip the beer aisle at the grocery store and the speaker on the grocery cart says "Hey! Don't forget your nice hot cheesy pizza!" which just happens to be on the aisle with the beer. It could get absurd but why not? It's just good old American Capitalism at work, isn't it? I mean, we can't deny the beer company the right to market their product can we? It's like the article I read recently where the Gambler's Anonymous website had ads for online SPAMMER-BEWARE's. Not illegal, but darned wicked nonetheless.
  24. If you are using tables you can use: ><td valign="top"> to shuffle everything to the top of that column. Not sure offhand how to do it with CSS but I'm sure there's a way.
  25. I think an important question to ask here is "Are they freeware scripts that you don't own but have the permission of the author to use freely?"
