  1. Congrats to the ever-helpful Rick! You rock!!! ...Dave
  2. Turtle... Wow, are you ever a fountain of knowledge! Thumbs Up Unfortunately for me, I had just come back to the forums here to report success in upgrading to 1.2 when I saw your post. However, your efforts were not in vain. I learned a lot about the way the forums are coded by reading your post. Thank you very much. I think this would make a great how-to for customizing an IPB in the "Family Members How To's" forum. I am sure many TCH'ers are running the Invision board and would appreciate it. Especially after reading that 1.1.x skins won't work in 1.2, a lot of folks will probably stick with 1.1.2 for a while. Thanks again, Dave Rock Sign
  3. That's the problem. I have 1.1.2 Time to upgrade. Thanks for the fast reply! Rock Sign ...Dave
  4. In these Family Forums there are a couple of links near the top left, just below the banner. They are "Web Hosting Home" and "Forum Guidelines". My board doesn't have any thing like that (just a straight install), but I would love to be able to put similar ones on my board. Am I blind? I searched the IPB docs and can't find any mention of them. Are they a plug-in, a straight PHP edit, or something else? Can anyone enlighten me? ..Dave
  5. Digirunt, You must be in the extreme minority (if not all by yourself!) if you are trying to get shopping cart software that conforms to W3C standards. But, all great ideas have to start somewhere! Go for it! I surmise that most shopkeepers/merchants on the web don't give a hoot about W3C standards and won't until someone shows 'em that it is worthwhile (i.e. more profitable, efficient, etc.). But, I applaud your committment. Good luck. Thumbs Up ...Dave
  6. Gotcha. I get the same error you describe after entering a bogus email and hitting enter. It's hard to tell where the problem is. Are you using formmail? It has been disabled here at TCH. Just a guess. ...Dave
  7. The page loaded fine for me (in Southern California). Did you want someone to actually try an order? ...Dave BTW, Your page looks nice, but it is HUGE! I have a very fast connection and it seemed slow. 56K dialup will take over 45 seconds (according to Tyrantula). I know you didn't ask for a review, but.... all that text at the bottom looks awfully spammy and will probably hurt, rather than help, your search engine ranking.
  8. I choose private domain registration (from DomainsByProxy) for all my domains for just such a reason. If you check the whois for wilexa.com you won't find any of my personal info (I hope). If you take a systematic and consistent approach to privacy on the web, it can make it very difficult (but not impossible these day, I 'm afraid) for the "average joe" to find your personal details. Just my 2 cents, Dave
  9. I'm on my way to the help desk... ...Dave
  10. Ty and turtle, Sorry, it was getting late and I got my *turt* mixed up! A quick edit and all is well. ..Dave
  11. Ty... What a great tip! Perfect for light-security streaming. I will put it to use right away. [subc]... TCH really needs a tutorial on streaming. It would be great to have a link, even in Spanish ...Dave
  12. Should this work or not? --- 1. I made a backup of domain A with the cPanel full backup method, then downloaded it to my home computer. 2. I went to nearly-empty domain B and tried a "Restore Home Backup" with my domain A .gz file. 3. The file appears to have uploaded fine, except it did not decompress or restore anything and the .gz file has gone missing, except its size still shows on my quota. 4. Actually I tried twice, now domain B is nearly full, but I can't find the .gz files anywhere in domain B with file manager, ftp program, or anything. Was this a completely ill-advised way of copying one domain's contents to another? I am sure beginning to think so.... Any thoughts?? ..Dave
  13. Your request is a little hard for me to understand, but, for a fast answer here goes: Go to yoursite.com/sqmail login using the full email address and password (myname@yoursite.com) The exception is when you are using the default (same name as cpanel) account. In that case, you leave off the @yoursite.com bit. That should get you in. ...Dave
  14. Just to clarify: You want to do streaming, not let the users download your files? Downloading is easier. Just put a link to the file name and when the user clicks on it, presto it opens (or downloads). If you want to do streaming you will need to encode your files using (suprise) an encoder. You might want to try Real Networks' Helix Producer Basic for limited functionality (its free) or Helix Producer Plus for extra functionality. You can also use Microsoft products or Quicktime. HTH, Dave
  15. If you haven't found it yet, there is a flash movie tutorial for dealing with DNS at godaddy here: GoDaddy tutorial. Welcome to the family! Thumbs Up ...Dave Rock Sign
  16. Just one quick note --- Three sites I have found really useful for Netscape-compatible (NN4) CSS are: http://www.realworldstyle.com , http://www.saila.com/usage/layouts/ , and http://www.fu2k.org/alex/css/ ...Dave
  17. Jim... I started this thread a while ago on basically the same subject. Unfortunately (for me), the percentage of Netscape 4 users visiting my site hasn't dropped, despite some not-so-subtle encouragement to use something newer. I stuck with a tabled layout for the main stuff and have a CSS-P version of the site in an experimental stage, dreaming of the day when it take over the spotlight. Generally speaking, though, most users I know won't come back if a site looks terrible in the first browser they see it with. So, each webmaster has to ask himself or herself: "How many visitors do I want to never come back?" That, of course, should be balanced with "How many visitors will come back over and over if the site really rocks with a reasonable browser?" I know, I know. No answers, just a lot of words! ...Dave Rock Sign
  18. If they are YOUR pictures, then further investigation is probably warranted. But if they are just Gallery icons and stuff, and the site looks OK to you, then there is no need to worry. ...Dave
  19. IN AWStats, you can click on the "404" down in the Errors section and it will show an exact list of the requests that generated the "Not Found" error. This may help track down the offenders. On my site, the top offender is /img-sys/mm-icon.png, which I assume is from a missing icon on the mailman (mailing list) page. It depends on how much traffic your site has as to whether you are experiencing "a lot" of errors. Don't know about the 301s, though. HTH, Dave
  20. Congrats, CM! We love snakes and knives! But your helpfulness is what counts. Keep up the good work! ...Dave
  21. TCH Gurus can chime in, but the quick answer is... See The SSL Page. Shared SSL is free. But your URL would look like: https://server*.totalchoicehosting.com/~username/ Pretty ugly if I do say so myself! Not confidence-inspiring to customers (if they even look at it). Your own SSL costs $$. ...Dave
  22. Jim, You wrote: Although some people think that URLs should never change, the reality is that they do. If the only links to your site list the main page, good for you! I would recommend that you watch the error logs every now and then to pick up 404s that 1) came from links that you couldn't find before or 2) that people had bookmarked. Also, I am not sure, but I would suspect (caution!! wild guess approaching!) that your search engine rank might suffer a bit. I wonder what our famous SEO director has to offer on site reorgs. Most importantly, though, you ARE being a good internet neigbor by offering a site that actually has "rich content" and a positive message. That is what people really appreciate. Thanks again for sharing your experience. We can all benefit from each other. ...Dave
  23. Well you can certainly take credit for taking the initiative and implementing it here at TCH! Mike, you have certainly jumped into your new job with great zest and we really appreciate your efforts! Rock Sign ...Dave
  24. Pretty spiffy! Was it a PHP hand-coding job or is a Invision Plug-in type of thingy? ...Dave
  25. World domination, huh? You must want to work for Microsoft after all! ...Dave
