jtownzen Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 At some point I'd like to have my own web site and domain name, but for now all I need is some space to host a few files. Would I have to have a domain name to use a hosting plan here, or would I be able to access my files with a URL like http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/~jtownzen/ or something similar? Quote
doc Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 I may be speaking out of turn here, but as far as I know you will need a domain name. Quote
doc Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 You can CLICK HERE to see how to purchase a domain name... Quote
jtownzen Posted July 12, 2003 Author Posted July 12, 2003 I'm familiar with registering domain names since I've had to do that at work (along with transfering other domain names from uncooperative registrants... Grrrr!), but I'd prefer to not do that until there's one that I like, that I'd want for a long time, and that's not already taken. If I need to then I'll get one now; I'd just like to make sure that there aren't any other options. Quote
leezard Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 unless the sign up process requires you have a domain name (I cant remember if it does or not) you will be given an address to access your site that is the IP address of the server and then your username like http://123.123.123.123/~username Quote
doc Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 As far as hosting here, I don't believe there is an option other than using a domain name. Who is your ISP? You may have a small amount of space to use for a personal web through them. Personally, I would recommend paying the 10.95 for a 1 yr registration on a domain name, and then hosting it on TCH. That is a very small anount to pay, and if you're not happy with the name you choose, you can always purchase when you find the one you want, or one you want becomes available. You could then point both domain names to the new domain name, and the most it costs you is the 10.95 for the first domain..... Quote
jtownzen Posted July 12, 2003 Author Posted July 12, 2003 Thanks, Leezard. The company I work for actually signed up for a semi-dedicated plan here a while ago, and I remember being able to access our web space with an IP number and account name, but I wasn't sure if it would be the same for one of the normal plans. In any case, I'll sign up here for web hosting first, and if it ends up being necessary to have a domain name then I'll register one. Thanks everyone. Quote
jtownzen Posted July 12, 2003 Author Posted July 12, 2003 Actually, it seems that you do need to give a domain name when signing up for a normal hosting account, so I guess I'll be doing the domain name registration first. Quote
TCH-Sales Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 Yes it's recomended to also register a domain name, the IP/~yourname is only ment for a temporary access while your domain name propigates or for a handful of other reasons. Pluse domain name prices are so low now, don't think it'll break the bank. Good luck! Quote
Lianna Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 Something else to think about... While you do have to have a domain name for hosting at TCH, you may request a change of that domain name on your account when/if you later buy a more desireable name. Quote
ejh Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 Today, domain names really don't cost that much. At Go Daddy.com I got my domain for under $9 per year. Works like a charm! Quote
Lianna Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Price isn't everything! That statement is true for most everything nowdays. Hosting and registrars are no exception. I would much rather pay an extra buck or two for an outstanding interface, support and reliability. I have worked domain accounts through more than 10 different registrars. Some of them have been total nightmares! Most of them have been confusing and inconsistent. I now buy new domains through Total Choice. Thumbs Up Quote
TCH-Rob Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Support your local TCH! Get your domain here. I have worked for a major domain registrar so I know the good and the bad. TCH uses the good. Liana, on a side note, did you guys drop the back ordering? Quote
doc Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 See...that's 2 ppl pointing you to TCH... come on in...the water's great! Quote
jtownzen Posted July 16, 2003 Author Posted July 16, 2003 Doesn't TotalChoiceHosting resell domain names through GoDaddy? Quote
Head Guru Posted July 16, 2003 Posted July 16, 2003 We resell thru Wild West Domains, a sister company of godaddy! Quote
