youneverknow Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Here is a free program you may be interested in http://sketchup.google.com/download.html Here are their words... Google SketchUp (free) is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program whose few simple tools enable you to create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects – even space ships. You can add details, textures and glass to your models, design with dimensional accuracy, and place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp (free) is a great way to discover if 3D modeling is right for you. Google SketchUp is free for personal use. No registration is required. youneverknow Quote
Madmanmcp Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Thanks, I'll have to play with it when I get home. Quote
Deverill Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Very powerful, but make sure you go through the video tutorials - if it takes more than a few seconds to do a piece then there's probably an easier way to do it. Thanks Sami! Quote
abinidi Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to check this one out. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 A lot more powerful than I thought at first glance. Very nice indeed. Quote
chatbug Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 Will check it out... not an architect or designer myself, but hey... it's free! Quote
abinidi Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 I tried it out. Wow. I'm going to have to get the commerical version so I can use it to create great graphics for some of the technical documents I product. It would be so easy to create a model of a computer or a monitor or whatever using these tools. Wow. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 I cannot believe this is free. I started using it yesterday to plan the deck/barbeque/landscaping in my backyard, but I soon went off on a tangent and started planning my secret underground hideout. (Preview here. Got a ways to go, but you get the idea.) Very, very easy to work with and very capable so far. Quote
TCH-Don Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Well I am impressed, I will have to try it out on my day off. Nice hideout Tim Quote
cajunman4life Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 I cannot believe this is free. Got a ways to go, but you get the idea.) Very, very easy to work with and very capable so far. Looks like a good spot for a very secure data center And to think I've been using AutoCAD all these years for my 3D work... I'll try it out when I get home later. Quote
Samrc Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Neat hideout! But obviously not built in Florida or near a coast that deep down or it would be underwater...unless that is part of the security arrangement? Quote
cajunman4life Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 He's building it under my place (which is in the Arizona desert... too much water just isn't a problem here) Quote
TCH-Tim Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 I'm on the outskirts of Vegas. Nothing but dirt and bedrock. Sure my water situation is similar to Aaron's. Quote
abinidi Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Liked the design, Tim. However, I think you'd better have an alternate entry/exit point. Maybe some stairs in case the power is out or something. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Agreed. The design has progressed quite a bit since that screenshot. I have another shaft for ventilation, water, utilities, etc. Putting a ladder in that one. Tried a spiral staircase, but that didn't work out. AutoCAD is better for complicated stuff like that. Quote
abinidi Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 How will you get furniture down into your house? How big is the elevator? I'm thinking of some kick-butt 70 inch plasma TV, and a leather Lay-Z-Boy and the California King Size Bed, (and the grand piano, of course) and I'm wondering if those things will fit in your elevator. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I noticed that too. The shaft is pretty big, so it shouldn't be too tough to make the elevator bigger. Quote
makaveli Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 (edited) with my first venture into 3d, i made a mini bus/train station, it wasnt meant to be anything just ended up like that, i been playing without tutorials.. just got a copy of maya PLE so that will be cool. and heres my shoddy train stn waiting room done a basic house too i did say they were rubbish Edited May 2, 2006 by makaveli Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 It starts all innocent enough, and then you get addicted. Watch out. Quote
makaveli Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 (edited) yeah, im being a little [insert other word] and not doing tutorials again but struggling with making a roof, just a traditional pyramid style one i speak too soon, it looking a bit rubbish and lob-sided but i think i have done it Edited May 2, 2006 by makaveli Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 The roof took me a little while to figure out. Another place where AutoCAD is much easier. But, I did figure it out eventually and came up with this. Quote
makaveli Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 whaoh! thats pretty impressive, i do have to say this is my current toy i do have literally a mountain of work to be doing, damn you google ill have to not use google sketch and get on with it! Quote
abinidi Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 LOL. This is eating gobs of my time as well. Who knew 3D drawings could be so easy. Great roof, Tim!! Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I sure would love an array function. Anybody find that yet? Quote
Steve Scrimpshire Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Windows: Version # 5.0.245Macintosh: Coming Soon Linux: When Hell freezes over Guess I'm out of luck trying this one. Quote
