  1. A possible solution is to use Flash, which can embed any font you like... but it comes with its share of problems. Personally, I'm not too big a fan of Flash sites. Checkout this site: http://www.search-this.com/website_design/...ever_die_1.aspx
  2. Hmm... is there a way to resolve this problem? Or is "500 Internal Server Error" an expected result from disabling the index? I'm new to web hosting, and don't know much about Apache/Linux either.
  3. Wow... nice hideout Tim!
  4. That's pretty neat... it still shows an index though, even though it's empty. I think "403 Forbidden" seem to send a stronger message, telling others "don't you dare try this". A question though... when I used the cpanel method of diabling the index... I get the "403 Forbidden" message, with a "500 Internal Server Error" error: What's the "500 Internal Server Error" about?
  5. It would be good to check if any of the "web-safe" fonts suits your tastes. Those are fonts that almost all browser will display correctly, such as Arial, Georgia, Tahoma, Times New Roman, and Verdana... Of course, by all means, list "Dotum" as your first preference. Though it would be nice to list web-safe alternatives so that for those people who don't have the "Doctum" font installed on their computer, their computer will show your website using a font that you think is acceptable, rather than the default font set in the browser.
  6. I did read the web hosting acceptable use policy and saw "Your subdomains are allowed to be used for any legal purpose. You may not sell the subdomain space to others, nor may you point other domain names to your subfolders."... but I thought that means having another domain name masquerading as a seperate domain, but using a subfolder as its contents. I know it is possible for domain names (e.g. example1.com) to show the contents of another site (example2.com), but mask the URL such that it appears as if you are visiting example1.com. So I thought a basic redirection without masking would be ok. Paul beat me to it... I was going to ask about how to set all folders to no indexing. But since there is a "system default" option, I'm pretty sure there must be some way of setting it... though, it might be at a level beyond regular user's control?! Hmm... can any techies answer that?
  7. There are actually more <meta> tags possible... <meta name="robots" content="index/noindex, follow/nofollow, archive/noarchive" /> "index/noindex" deals with whether or not the page will be indexed for searching. "follow/nofollow" tells the robot whether or not to follow the links in the page. "archive/noarchive" determines if your page will be cached by the robot... or rather, whether your page will show a "cached version" in google, at least. <meta name="googlebot" content="index/noindex, follow/nofollow, snippet/nosnippet, archive/noarchive" /> Google offers another function... "snippet/nosnippet". So whether a small snippet will be shown below your link when someone searches and your page comes up as a result. I think I might create a page for the "irrelevant" links like friendster, myspace, etc. By the way, I think there's a "no relation" tag that you can add to links... not quite sure about the exact coding, where it's placed, or how it affects your ranking/score... anyone know much about that?

    Family Blog

Personally, I find WordPress fairly easy to use. But I guess the setting up and administration still might take a bit of skill... As with password protection... I don't think if WordPress has such function, but I might be wrong. I'm fairly new to WordPress. I think for MSN spaces, you can set to visible only to people you specify... but then, you'll be hosted by Microsoft instead of on your own server. My 2 cents... cheers!
  9. oops... I didn't know that! -.-;;;; I've corrected it now anyway.... I have a <meta> powered forwarding page for my root directory, so any traffic linked there will be redirected to http://blog.chatbug.org/, wherever they come from. I also have a "you are no supposed to be here" redirection page for any directory that I don't want people have FTP-like HTTP access... once, I accidentally discovered a friend's resume/CV in one of his sub-directories. I think any directory without index.html or index.php automatically have get an FTP-like html interface (if you know what I'm talking about)... like /images/ directories, which I believe most websites will have. A bit of a side-question... is there a technically correct or easier way of preventing such "unauthorized" access to these directories? I can't quite figure out a way with permissions, since for most of those directories, you'll need to set it readable by public for them to access the contents (e.g. images, javascript, etc).

    Spam Karma 2

Well, I installed SK2 in addition to Akismet, just-in-case... forgot who's post I read, someone said he got several hundred spam post out of nowhere, so I think I'll play safe. Hehe... BTW, Akismet comes free with WP2, and is supposed to be anti-spam as well. It needs an API key from WordPress.com though...
  11. Done... changed by my DNS configurations and submitted help desk ticket. Thanks, Thomas!
  12. If I'm not mistaken, outbound links reduces a website's ranking and distributes it to the linked websites, am I correct? If so, how do I control the effects of outbound links? For my blog, I have limited number of people on my blogroll - just those who link to me and those who don't syndicate (i.e. "private" MSN spaces blogs), and I try to limit the links to photo sites of my friends by "converting" my friends to use Flickr. I still have a bunch of other websites I have yet to setup links for... e.g. my profiles on friendster, myspace and okcupid, as well as other websites that I find useful/amusing, but probably not worth hurting my site's ranking on search engines for. Any idea how do I setup a link page that won't hurt my ranking? One solution I am thinking about is putting <meta> tag to tell robots not to follow the links, but I'm not sure whether that will work or not, or if it's the ideal solution. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
  13. A question though... I'm on the starter plan, and as far as I know, I am supposed to only have one domain name (http://chatbug.org/) for the account. So for now, I am forwarding a couple of other names I have directly to my blog (http://blog.chatbug.org/)... is that bad? If I want to "park" my other .net and .info domains on top of my .org domain, do I just add the same DNS information as with my .org domain to the other two? Wouldn't that be hosting multiple domains on that one site? I'm kind of unsure... as you might have guessed, I'm new to web admin. -.-;;;;
  14. Yup, the link works. Probably I should write up a better description in the future. But I'm still learning to write good content and finding my style at the moment... so guess I'll save that for later.
  15. I'm a Mozilla Firefox user too... and I love it! Now I'm totally addicted to tabbed browsing. I hate it when there are too many buttons on my task bar, especially when I have several applications and MSN messenger on, and are chatting with a few people at once... and then if I chat with too many people, they all collapse to one button, then switching between windows becomes so bloody difficult. I'm utterly reliant on Gmail Manager, and have ForecastFox too (more for at-a-glance forecast). There are lots more other extensions too... I miss "Hotmail Tabs", which stopped working with v1.5... too bad the developer didn't release an updated version.
  16. Will check it out... not an architect or designer myself, but hey... it's free!
  17. I did not experience too much problems migrating from Blogger to WordPress, the import function works fine on TCH servers... though a few things I experienced are listed below: 1. A minor annoyance was that the importing was rather slow... it happened much faster on my WordPress.com experiment. Perhaps the server on WordPress.com was faster? 2. A minor problem I experienced was two entries (out of 269) had their titles changed to a sequence of numbers. Not sure what caused that, but they were quite easy to edit and fix up... you'll probably want to categorize your imported blogger posts anyway (which was the most time consuming thing for me). So you can fix up the titles when you come across them. 3. A bigger problem is that images that were floated left or right were not imported correctly. I think the float tags are removed in the import process. For me, using the default WP theme, I had to manually add [class=alignleft] or [class=alignright] to every image... for the default theme, those tags float the images left and right, and automatically adds some padding. By the way, when I was still deciding on whether to purchase my own hosting service, I experimented on a free server that broke the Blogger importing tool... so I did the WordPress.com, then massive RSS file import thing joseftu suggested. It worked!

    Spam Karma 2

Erm... I'm using Akismet now... is that not good enough? Anyway, I'll go checkout Spam Karma 2...
  19. Forgot to mention, also mentioned in links section.
  20. Hi, please add my blog to the family. 1. http://blog.chatbug.org/ 2. blog.chatbug.org 3. Blog 4. Link is located on under "meta", along with link to WordPress. Thanks!
  21. Just thought I'd let everyone know... I have gotten a starter plan and I'm now working on migrating my blog. Got the "406 Not Acceptable" error for a while, trying to recategorize this particular posts in WP. Found a post in the forum that was quite useful! I'm enjoying my time with TCH so far!
  22. Hi, I experienced the same problem while trying to re-categorize this particular posts of mine, after importing it from blogger.com. Now that it's been fixed up and re-categorized, is it safe leaving the .htaccess like that? Or would it be best to return it to "normal"? Thanks.
  23. Oops, didn't know i can't use my_domain_dot_com. That was what the **** were.
  24. Thanks, Mike & Don. I *think* I understand your point, Paul. So basically, if I have ****, mydomain.net, and mydomain.org, I can only set it up such that one of them actually serves my host content, right? Then, if I use **** as "the one", can I redirect the other domains I have to load as ****?
  25. I have been considering hosting my own blog for some time, and the recent Blogger.com publishing breakdown is prompting me to accelerate my plans. A friend of mine, a blogger using WordPress on her own host, suggested using TCH, which she is considering migrating to herself. But before actually purchasing any services, I have some questions that I just want to make sure of... It seems that your website will have no problem supporting phpBB2 (since this forum is running), WordPress or Movable Type. I am wondering if it's possible to run multiple blogs on this server using multiple MySQL databases? Is any limitation as to how many or how big MySQL databases Start Plan users can have? With regard to support for various functions of blogging... Do you support Apache mod_rewrite module (for clean URI's known as Permalinks) for WordPress? Do you support php mail function to, for example, email posts? Do you support Cron jobs for automatic backup of WordPress? Currently I have a number of blogs, most of them are PG-grade. I do have a mature-rated blog where I do write posts with adult theme and may contain nude and sexual images (not child/underage pornography, all within what's legally acceptable). Will this be acceptable for TCH? Or does TCH not allow any adult content? I have my own domain name with GoDaddy.com, how soon will configuration information be sent for me to update DNS for my domain names? That's all the questions I can think of right now. Will ask if I have any more questions. Thanks in advance!
