Tell us when his CD comes out! I'm a country fan (although I tend to lean more toward country/pop than traditional country), so I'd probably buy one.

Scary I feel sorry for her though

Use a php script to display the image Ex: http://www.alanv.org/vimage.php?page=s6cp3...n%20Lawn&skin=6 It's really easy then to have the script also increment a text file counter somewhere (or a database).

I noticed all my spam is now being tagged with ****SPAM**** Nice.

I'm getting my site visitors to switch to Firefox or another non-IE browser. I toyed with the idea of just doing <? die("You're using IE"); ?> for a while (which would refuse to load any part of my site for IE users), but figured it'd be easier to put a huge reminder at the top of all my pages. http:/www.alanv.org See? But yeah, I'm the webmaster for my dormitory website, and after IE forced me to spend two hours rewriting otherwise perfect code (I actually followed standards! I think... I should validate it sometime) so it would show up, I just declared my site non-IE friendly. For example, I know my new site skin doesn't show up correctly in IE. Good. And you can write a script (Javascript or php or otherwise) that redirects based on browser. But then you'd have to do two versions of your site... one for IE, and one for every other browser in the world. Firefox is up to 4 million downloads! http://www.getfirefox.com

There's a policy here So you can't register a trademark without a valid reason

So, while they're pulling their hair out trying to make sure their site is readable in all browsers, I get to sit back and just enjoy making my site. Now, I think they're just jealous. Thanks Don. That's a good point, Don. I've totally dropped support for IE from my site because it interprets HTML so different from every other browser, creating a need for me to do a couple hours of extra tweaking to make things compatible with it. People who use creation programs don't have that problem because their code is always standards-compliant. I won't even pretend that the code I write is standards compliant, or even close. :-P

I personally hand code (always have, always will... I like the control it gives me over my code), HOWEVER, I have nothing against people who use site builder programs. I've used Dreamweaver and Netscape Composer before, and I find the code they generate to be wasteful. Maybe it's just me and my malformed HTML :-P Anyway, Betty, you should ignore anyone who says you don't deserve a website. The web is here for everyone to use how they see fit (within the confines of the law, obviously). If you want to get a domain and publish your site using Frontpage (FP is the one site-building program I AM against because it's so anti-standards... but I still have nothing against people who use it), go right ahead Some people take the web way too seriously. I don't know why people are threatened by "fun" websites... And remember, we were all newbies once. Almost everyone out there has used a program at one time or another. Some people just keep using them... others migrate into hand coding. Nothing wrong with either.

I get some results too http://www.google.com/search?q=+link%3Awww...:en-US:official

Yeah, a lot of people seem to be confused by the non-instant activation of TCH. I actually think it's better because it prevents fraud since they can do full checks on everything before creating your account.
-
But you won't be unhappy with the service

Heh, I know what you're going through. I installed SP2 last Saturday. (should've known better, especially since I'm a CS Major). Uninstalled it Sunday morning after I wasn't able to copy a few MB text file from one folder to another (not enough memory, please close all open applications) I just removed it through Add/Remove Programs, then ran a defrag session. Alternately, you can do Windows Restore to the point before you installed (a restore point is created for the install) Or read the links Madmanmcp posted

Neomail, Horde And Squirrelmail - Comparison
AlanV replied to oompahloompah's topic in Open Discussion
I recommend Horde, personally. Neomail sucks (and creates folders in your mail directory), and Squirrel mail... well, I've never honestly used it, so I can't tell you. -
You can setup mailing lists if you need to notify a lot of people How that counts toward that max though, I'm not sure.
-
That'd be hard to do... You'll probably have to setup subdirectories inside gallery.thetechgurus.net thetechgurus.net/gallery/nycpics/gallery Then you can setup a simple redirection through cpanel (through the subdomain)
-
That's a good analogy. I'd rather have reliability, features, and support than save a few bucks a month. My previous host was cheaper than TCH, but was unreliable, and the support had gone downhill (it did used to be good though). In looking for a new webhost, I saw a ton of unbelievable deals, but most of them didn't offer things like unlimited subdomains, unlimited emails, mySQL, cgi, etc. And the others had bad reviews for reliability or support. ...and I just killed this topic didn't I? Every topic I post in seems to die instantly. I'm sorry!!!
-
Windows, unfortunately :-\
-
Oh, that makes sense then. Thanks!
-
Glad you got your site working! Like your layout too. See, this kind of support is why TCH is way ahead of everyone else.
-
But if it doesn't get transferred to another registrar... what would happen?
-
No, I wouldn't charge them. And they'd just use the url http://subdomain.alanv.org Okay, thanks for the clarificaiton I read somewhere in the AUP that hosting people on subdomains wasn't allowed, so that's why I was confused.
-
I have a question about domains and transfer (as in transferring the actual domain, not the website associated with it). If the company that hosts my domain goes out of business, is there any way to transfer my domain to another company? I read somewhere that all that is needed for a transfer is approval from the administrative contact of the domain. I am all the contacts for my domain. So if the company goes out of business and I cannot contact anyone from there, would I still be able to transfer my domain? Or would I have to wait until it expires, then re-register it (with downtime and all that great stuff ). Also, if the company goes out of business, would my domain cease to exist? I have it registered for another two years (already paid)... would my website not work if they went out of business? (If this is the wrong forum, please move. I had no idea where to post this... and this forum was for subdomain info, so I figured I'd post it here).
-
I just need to make sure, because I'm still confused on the issue. Are we or are we not allowed to host people on subdomains (just a journal, a personal website, etc). If not, are we allowed to host people in subdirectories?

Woot. Fellow Arizonian. Well, I'm actually in Pennsylvania right now (college), so we felt the effects. Record rains... and insane winds. My backpack was soaked through by the end of the day.
