OMgosh that is a riot! I have to wonder at the last price bid though - I think someone might be doing it as a joke which is really mean. It's a pain to get money back from eBay and they're never happy about it.

When there is downtime, it varies. Normally they'll be on top of whatever it is within a few minutes to an hour, tops. If an upgrade doesn't go as expected, it could be 30 minutes to 2 hours. The crash that Bruce spoke of is by FAR the longest outage I've ever seen here. DOS attacks, well....the attack itself is beyond their control, but you bet HG will be up all night getting it nailed down. Even then the downtime isn't usually too long. Take a look at the different servers' forums. You can get a good feel for how things are done when problems arise.

I've been here since January and have never had a problem. Even my dial-up family members have decent load times. When there is downtime, either for maintenance, hardware issue, or DOS attacks, Head Guru and the crew keep everyone informed, and they don't make excuses if the problem is on their end. You'd be hard pressed to find another hosting company out there with even half as much integrity as these guys have, and you certainly can't beat the price!

People send their credit card numbers to phishers too even with the inundations of warnings we get all the time. No offense to your friend - I have some relatives who have no business even owning a computer but it's not the ad's fault if they got themselves turned around and couldn't even tell what they were signing up for.

Ah, I think I see the problem. It looks like that top part is advertising, not the logo of the site you are on. If you click on it, it takes you to TCH's domain name registration options. I think it is just a case of a very inexperienced person with poor navigation and observation skills.

So the question is, how did he get there to begin with? ...and why did it have TCH at the top?

Have you checked to make sure it uploaded? Looks like the link is going to your main public_html folder, not a subfolder. Did it get uploaded to the right spot?

I guess I need some clarification. It was my understanding that having hotlink protection enabled keeps others from linking directly to your picture on another site. In other words, hubby couldn't use an image stored on our site as his avatar for a message board. sts - if I do not want someone linking directly to a picture, why would I check this? Perhaps I'm not understanding its purpose correctly. Lisa - Regarding the URLs to allow access box - what am I allowing access to and to whom? Darn fuzzy cpanel explanations or maybe it's just a braindead Monday.

Lisa - in the URLs to Allow Access box I have: ht*p://gryfalia.com ht*p://www.gryfalia.com As for my images, I just do an Insert Image from Dreamweaver, so it's just basic code with relative links. sts - no, I did not check that box.

I tested mine by enabling hotlink protection in cpanel, and now all my graphics come up as the little red x's. What's the point of the protection if it screws up your site? There must be a better answer than having to go in and change code.

Ahhh....I turned on hotlink protection, and now I'm getting the same problems VI was having. I'll go in and turn that off now. I need to find a workaround for that - it shouldn't be blocking my images completely.

Always makes me wish I were more gifted as well. I will always be a mediocre web designer as I'm neither overly technical nor artistic.

I used to be scared of FTP as well, but trust me - it's VERY easy, and once you use it, you'll never go back.

I also agree about staying away from frames. Not only for the search engines, but people can't link to various pages in your site when it's in frames, and IMO they are a pain to update. We still have a few old Frontpage sites here at work in frames and I cannot wait til we put them in templates. Speaking of templates, they are VERY easy in Dreamweaver, and if you have a larger site, you will love using them. I think that having a basic knowledge of HTML is a MUST. Even in Dreamweaver, there will be times when a line or paragraph just won't do what you want, and you'll need to be able to look in the code to find out what is wrong. I don't think you can be an effective web designer without understanding what is going on in the background. You don't have to be an expert, but knowing how to hand code basic tables, pictures, and links will make your life easier in the long run when you need to tweak the code. I have never been able to recover things deleted from my deleted folder. :/ I accidentally did a shift-delete here at work once but had the wrong thing highlighted, and tech support said there was nothing they could do. I don't know if that's true or not, but usually they're pretty good at doing restores, so I had to believe what they told me.

Aha - I did not know that one either.

Now that I'm at work and can look at it, under Adobe PDF Settings/General Conversion Settings, choose Screen. Never just click on the button in Word (or other MS applications) that automatically converts it for you. Just to give you an idea, I took a Word document (one page) with b/w and color text. Clicking on the button in Word made an 81kb pdf. Doing a File/Print with ebook as the setting made it 74kb. Choosing Screen brought it down to 22kb. Oddly enough, 600dpi and 200dpi turned out the same. I thought it would make a difference, but I guess not.

You can also have PayPal just withdraw the funds directly from your checking to pay for something. You don't have to keep a balance in PayPal to use it.
