  1. This is all too strange and I see two choices. Hang up on the dude and ignore him, he's pulling your chain. Or you can yank his back. Agree with him, say your sorry and offer to reimburse him for the expenses. Offer to send him a check and get his company name and address. Once you have those turn them in. Of course they will be false but you are just fooling around anyway and have no intention of paying. You are breaking no law, browsing the intenet is free and you cannot stop anyone from going to an open site. If he doesn't want folks visiting his page he should secure it. And $45 a visit...geesh, what a crock. Also, how did he get a phone number from an IP, you can possible get some number from a whois but proving thats the computer that visited a web site is not going to fly in court.
  2. I would roll back the video drivers and see if the problem continues. If the problems clears you know its the video and can work from there. I've seen lots of strange problems caused by corrupt or poorly programmed video drivers.
  3. NOt sure I've heard of this before but could possibly be several things. You can try setting your Icons from large to small, you may just have one too many trying to fit in a small space. Or try removing one of the options. Next I would check the default font being used, a proportional font will grow or shrink at different times.
  4. Can I borrow 50 bucks Uncle Dave?
  5. Hey, I've heard of that program Twice in one month, at this rate the free publicity should swell the user ranks to almost double what they had last year. I wonder if they are going IPO or trying to sell the program?
  6. Like Jim mentioned there are companies that will do this for you...for a price. Or there are other creative ways which would be cheaper. You can use a cheap external Hard Drive and burn a backup image to it. Then you would need a relative in a remote location to agree to hold the drive for you until you need it back. If they are close enough you could drive it over or mail it. Or you could rent a safe deposit box in another city to store it. Or you could burn to DVD's and store them. The good thing about this route is the data security is controlled by you, not by Google.
  7. I was reading about this yesterday and like the gmail space, alarms went off in my head again. Why would I want my files somewhere else? Why would I want them somewhere where a hacker can get access to them and I have no control? And with the current legal problems with the government wanting access to all the searches we've done, now they will get access to the files I have...withOUT me giving them permission. Nah, I'll keep my stuff over here and they can come to the front door with a warrant if they need to snoop around for anything. Not that I have anything illegal, its just my right to keep MY STUFF private

h_tp://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DIMM.html I believe one will work if you are using DIMM's.
  9. Hi Laimonas, I believe Jim answered your question. Pings times will be different even if you ping the same site. And this is not something that is under the control of TCH or any other hosting company. You are thousands of miles away and are being routed by hundreds of different routers to get back and forth across the ocean. Your ping times will vary and it is not something TCH can control.
  10. You do not get infected because of where you host a web site. You get infected different ways and depending on your habits and how well you are protected. Also getting spyware is totally unrelated to being infected with a virus. I would suggest you have them question the guy responsible for security. But the only secure computer is the one that is turned off and unplugged.
  11. Oh I got thousands of hits Jim, only the first result was the Ritlabs site and the rest were for anything else relating to bats. I didn't bother seaching thourghly. That is what I would expect, I believe its a good program because of the things you and Bill say about it. But its a email program you have to pay for and with all the other free ones out there it will remain in the "many thousands" I'm afraid.
  12. Oops, looks like I'm in trouble now And I even replied to that string right behind Bills endorsement. Still, the major browsers are what the hackers concentrate on so I think there is a very very slim chance that anything will ever be seen "in the wild" for it. Thanks for the Info Groovyfish. {waits for Bill}
  13. Some Security group that has nothing better to do publishes a vulnerability it found in a program called The Bat!. I'm curious, who even uses this program? I've never heard of it and seaches on Google only produce one link to its web site that relates to it. So why would Secunia worry about such a non-issue as this and apply a Critical rating to it. There's no one using the program so hackers will not waste their time writing code to exploit it. Yes its a good idea to notify about an update but leave that to the company to inform its userbase. I don't believe its a big threat to the Internet at large.

  15. I just found this on CNN and came back here to post...but you beat me to it h_tp://money.cnn.com/2006/02/17/technology/apple_virus.reut/index.htm Its not the first, but it is the first for OS X, its also a low level risk. Hopefully it will not do much damage. I believe some Mac folks will get burned just because they are under the impression that just because they are on the Mac they are safe.
  16. When trouble shooting a problem we use several "tools" to help us determine what and where a problem might be. When you run a traceroute from your desktop you are looking at the problem from your computer to the computer where the web site is located. When you run it from dnsstuff you are checking from THEIR computer to the web sites computer. Its a good habit to try both, this will tell you if its a local problem. The trace may fail from your computer but work from dnsstuff. So if you only test from one location and it works you move on to the next trouble shooting task, not realizing that the problem is somewhere local to you.

Nice find Dick, hope thats the fix we're looking for.

Ok, appears there is more to this than a simple association problem. An "excessive" cleanup of the hard drive can cause major malfunctions of Windows depending on what you have deleted. I am guessing that there is more wrong then just this issue. As far as I can tell at the moment there is no association listed for .lnk, it must be a built in Windows function. Two possible fixes I can think of is to reinstall Windows or try to run System Restore and restore to a point before you did your excessive cleanup.
  19. Yes and if I read correctly this new "feature" will be the default (on). And as you know the average user leaves the defaults as is and will not attempt to reset or change the configuration and will be at risk.
  20. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1925064,00.asp When the first reports came out about Google wanting to index personal hard drives there were these loud sirens going off in my head. Why would I want this? Why would anyone want some company to keep their personal information? Well here it is, the articles about how this information may be used against you or obtained by legal OR illegal methods. Real glad I listened to that little voice in my head that said "STAY AWAY! STAY VERY, VERY FAR AWAY!!"

Oh, thats an easy fix. Start Windows Explorer, click on Tools and select Folder Options, click on the File Types tab. Now scroll down the list till you find TXT line and click on the Change button. Select the program that you want to use to open your text documents from now on. Click OK, click on close to close the Folder Options window and close Windows Explorer, you are done. Now you can also locate the file you want to open in Windows Explorer, right-click on it and use the OPEN WITH... option and select a different program than what is set as the default assocciation.
  22. I'm a little unsure of what the question is... The PST is the folder format used by Outlook and this file is stored locally on your PC. If you are then backing up this folder and then uploading these files to your web site, then yes it could be expensive. Why not invest (if you don't already have one) in a DVD recorder and burn these files to a DVD. You can keep the years separate on different DVD's and each individuals on different DVD's. For "offsite" storage you can rent a safety deposit box at a bank in a different city.
  23. Go into your cPanel, under Web/FTP Stats click on the AwStats Stats link.
  24. Thanks for the link to your other post Raul, I may look into that a little more later. I did some more research and I found that my first impression was correct. I did a whois on yimg.com and found that it belonged to Yahoo. I then went to the Yahoo page and clicked on IMAGE and typed in "swim 95" and my image popped up as the first picture with links to my 1995 Swim Team page. So now I know the what and why, Its Yahoo's image indexing. I just need to decide if I want those images out there or if I want to block them.
  25. I found some strange entries in awstat this morning need help figuring out what is going on. I was surprised to find some hits from foreign countries, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Switzerland. My sites are not advertised, strictly used by my local community and the teams and families. Next I find terms in the Search Keyphrases that I have not seen before. I know hits from other countries are probably ok, but the links had me wondering. Now when I go to the leading URL at yimg.com I find a thumbnail of my image. Is this some search engine storing my picture and linking back to my page? If it is I am not sure I like this and will probably want to put a stop to it. I have lots of information on my pages that I don't need getting into some pedophiles hands. And I would hate to have to remove all these pictures. The families love seeing their kids names and pictures and to be able to show other relatives across the country how their sons and daughters are doing. Is this a simple addition to the htaccess or should I just not worry about it.
