If you are currently using Wordpress, all you need to do is find a widget-ready theme to use and you can control your sidebar content with drag-n'-drop ease. You can find many 2, 3 and 4-column themes that support widgets. Lorelle has a good introduction to widgets on her Wordpress blog.

Sure just set up an auto-respond email for the email address in question. The account does not have to exist. I recommed that you set the FROM address in the auto-responder set up to a valid email address.

A cron job is an automated way of running scripts on the server.

With Wordpress you set up an email address on your site and provide that address in the Wordpress Admin panel that you will send email through that will publish to your blog. You will also have to use a cron job to make it automatic.

You can use Fantastico and do a one-click install of Wordpress on your site. You will either have to modify a theme that comes with Wordpress or search Google for about a million choices of themes out there. I would just install one and play with it and see if you think it will integrate into your site. Another option is to go with something like Joomla or Drupal which is a database driven software package to manage your entire site and has blogging capabilities built into it. Both are available for installation through Fantastico found in your cPanel.
