More Reasons Why I Changed Hosts
Deverill replied to jim_bob45506's topic in Reviews of TotalChoice Hosting
I know! We can tell him it will be Total Bill Hosting and then when he agrees we change it to Total Jim saying it was a typo in the original! It truly is easier to get forgiveness than permission! So many Jims is why I use the pseudonym Deverill everywhere. I have about 3 evil twins out there with the same first, last and middle initial as mine so every time I went to sign up for anything from Walgreens to AOL the user name combinations based on that were all taken by these finely named fellows. Deverill is a D&D character I had back in the day when I did that kind of thing a lot and it is a very uncommon name so I almost always get it when I sign up for something. -
Just as a test, David, I sent e-mail from here to another account I use that is not part of TCH (it's called Runbox and lives in the UK). Here are some entries from the header that came in: You can see that it took a total of almost 2 minutes to go from the US to the UK across a total of 3 email servers. Not too shabby. Hope it helps settle your concerns. I've been here a few months and never seen any email (or any other) delays. Looking forward to you joining the family Deverill

You are welcome. The colors should be the same. Are you sure it is not just that the color looks different on such a dark background than it does on the webmonkey site which has a white background? Sometimes the background and choice of fonts makes one color look like a different one. You could probably do a google search for "color hex codes" and find one that has a dark background so you can see what that looks like. That's the search string I used and there were a lot of hits to choose from.

strodeath, I looked at the link you provided. On the page my browser sees there is a line: ><body bgcolor="#E5E5E5" text="#00000" link="#006699" vlink="#5493B4"> In this line the bgcolor is the background color. The text="#000000" part of the line says to make your text black. If you change that part of the line to say text="#FFFFFF" then it is instructing the browser to make the text white. Of course, you can change the numbers to get anything in between. You can go to the page at hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/reference/color_codes/ to see all of the best color combinations to use and the code number for each of them. Since you are using templates it may not look exactly like this where you change the HTML code. You may also need to look for tags in the HTML code for your page that says something like ><FONT color=#000000> which does the same thing, but only for the words between that and the /FONT end tag. I hope this helps.

strodeath, It is blatantly obvious you are, as you put it, a noob. As a new user everyone expects you to have questions about your hosting home. None of us, however, expect your unappreciative tone or the reliance on being a "noob" to excuse a basic lack of understanding nor the inability to follow a conversation. It would be like a person going to a car dealer and buying a car. The salesman would expect questions such as "What weight oil does this car use?" or "What octane gasoline should I use in it?" He would not expect a question like "What does 'reverse' on this stick thingy on the wheel mean?" or "How do I open the door?" We all have been willing to help you learn what you can do here, but it is very difficult to continue to do so with such rude comments as "You'd think that you all would be smart enough to realize I'm a noob by now." Of course, if none of us are that smart then why ask us all the questions. I hope you will learn from the others here... they are a very bright and helpful bunch. I also hope that you can learn what you need to make a successful web site for yourself. Most of all, I hope you can find it in yourself to actually respect the wisdom of others and accept their instructions and try to find things out on your own instead of asking for every little thing and then insulting the very ones who have helped you. It's all about being a good citizen, my friend. Respect goes a long way - insults fall straight to the ground and go nowhere. Best wishes!

Nice site and great photos Chad! Welcome to the family!

This is a good reason to turn off the preview panel of Outlook. Some virus programs will trigger if they are even opened by the preview so make sure it's turned off.

Welcome to the family. Once you get your site closer to completion remember to ask for a review and to be added to the family links section so we can get you some extra links that will surely boost your impact.

I just got that one from "PayPal" and another from "Amazon". I also got one from FBI.GOV but it was so poorly worded it was obviously a fake. In all three of them the text that shows is a valid address but it is just text - the real link is somewhere else like paypalt.com which is easy to overlook. My method of dealing with these things is that if I get an email I read and delete it. If it is an account I care about I open the browser myself and go to the site and check for whatever problems may be there. Never click a link that deals with this kind of thing.

It all depends on whom you purchased your domain name registry from. Some set it up immediately and others take awhile. The 24-72 hour thing generally refers to how long it takes the change to the DNS setting to get the word out to the rest of the world. If I change my DNS entry, for instance, XYZ Domain Registry company may make the change immediately but BellSouth, my internet provider, won't know where jimscomputing.com is until maybe 3 days later. The part you quoted is the right info that you have to set on the site of the place you bought the domain name.
-
Hi Strodeath, DNS is Domain Name System or Domain Name Service. Basically it turns the name of your domain, in my case jimscomputing.com, into a correct IP address so a person looking for your site will end up at the computer hosting that site. What all this means to you is that you need to go to the company where you bought your new domain name and tell them to send anyone looking for you to the proper IP address here at TCH. The nameserver to use is in the signup email along with instructions for uploading your site before the name change spreads to the entire world. What you can do is tell your browser to go to the IP directly instead of giving it the name of your site and letting it try to look that up. Hope it helps.

Filtering Emails By Subject...
Deverill replied to OmicronLab's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Many POP3 email clients have this ability built in to them. I know that Outlook (Rules Wizard) and Eudora (Filter Messages) do. You should check the help section of your email program to see if it allows/provides this feature. As far as I know there is no server-side filtering for POP3 setups. -
I like the server pictures, good choice! It looks a lot better than the one there now ... way to go!

I'm no expert by any means, that's Scott's job but I do know that it is all about key words. Key words are useful in the title, meta-keywords, the beginning of sentences, in header tags <H1>, etc, and in general text content of your site. Beware, though. If you have it just covering the entire page, especially if it is repeated (like <Title>Spam, spam, spam, spam</title>) the engines may think you are spamming them and will demote or even de-list your site. The keywords have to be wrapped with reasonable amounts of text to make it informational. Your site is good in that you have a lot of good information on what reiki is and that helps. Also, do not try to put your keywords on the page and disguise them by making the text the same color as the background or other tricks. These will almost certainly get you kicked off the engines. Hope it helps! Make sure you go back and read the entire thread - there has been great advice and it's all still here!

Filtering Emails By Subject...

How are you getting your emails? Are you using POP3 or one of the online emails like Squirrel mail? -
Hey, great info everyone! Jack, you must be like a billionare with all the great ideas you always have. Thanks. Rob, I'll PM you with the details of the business - don't want to use the forums for commercial things y'know. Thanks for the google take on it too - guess I need to re-re-read their info to stay up on things, eh?

The TCH Family has given such great input on other things I've pondered, I have another. Should a serious, small, need-the-links, business site use a webring to get links and visits? I fear that it would bleed off customers from my client since the other ring members are competitors by definition. The incoming links would be helpful, I think, and we may catch a few customers but would we lose more than we get?
-
Thanks, Jack, for the post. I am a firm believer of credit where credit is due and am glad to see Scott get some of his deserved credit. Just think, he could be making big bucks on just what he gives us for free! The summary of probably 30-50 posts is also a good one. I'm glad it's working for you! Great job!
-
Not exactly on-topic but I use whois.sc when I have a domain name.
-
Of course you could use squirrel mail right here on your TCH home... viruses and trojans can't cause outlook or another mail program to trigger anything if there is no client. You need to watch for HTML messages but I'm pretty sure the options allow you to turn that off. Just a thought.

It's not an elimination of services, HG, it's an upgrade of performance! I doubt many use the others so the impact will probably be small. Thanks for the message and for watching our performance issues so closely! Rock Sign

It looks like something mechanical was happening from midnight to 7am. Do the numbers after 7 seem reasonable for your site? If so I would suspect either a renegade googlebot process went nuts or someone was doing a denial of service attack or something like that. Make sure you submit a helpdesk ticket - the gurus there can track a lot of things with their logs and tools. Best wishes!

More Reasons Why I Changed Hosts

Welcome to the family, Jim_bob! (We'll have to rename it to Total Jim Hosting if we get any more Jim's!) If you ever need anything just yell! -
Wow, a busy Saturday morning on the ole forums! That's what I love about TCH - between the folks and the geography there's always answers available... but enough about that! One thought that came to mind is that it's important to be consistent whatever I use.. one man or twenty as long as we're not psychopathic it's ok. CM and Tracy mention we are not alone. I know in my "real life job" the support vendors we use are selected more on who they can draw from if it's a real stumper rather than how many folks are sitting around like the Maytag repair man waiting to jump on a problem. I wonder if the typical web design client appreciates the difference Susandennis speaks to my own heart too - if it's not done with integrity and accountability then what use is it? There has to be a real person behind the thing and we gotta know who he/she is before giving out the credit card number. I'll have to work more on my about page! Turtle - great idea! I'll have to see how that flows on my site because you bring a good point up about freelancers. If I get someone to do a logo, for instance since I'm artistically inept, am I presenting a lie to the client if I don't state that up front? I'd rather not even get into that - and using the business name is a good way to avoid any issues. Thanks for the great input folks - I got some thinnin' do to Quicksdraw. It's all about opinions but I like the diversity and sanity (maturity) of the folks here!
