Unfortunately, they only let us comment once per six months. It is based on the email address and domain name. I have several sites and used my "collector email account" and it blocked them all but I was able to post one new review by using another email address. Didn't think it nice to do more than one every few months but the first one I posted was without any experience with the hosting so I thought I should "update" it.

As long as the post is not an advertisement then you are free to do so. We need to protect our family from those who would plaster ads in these forums and unfortunately we occasionally have to limit even family members. Remember to go into your cpanel to turn on Spam Assassin filtering. If you get mail that does not look like spam then you can even turn down the points at which SA filters junk mail. Some of the computing and web design newsletters I get look a lot like spam so I've left mine at the default 5.0

Pay attention to what they say. For instance, are they providing you information about the account they say you have with them or are they asking for info they should already have? I got a call about 2 weeks ago from a guy that said he was with my bank and that they had found my debit card number on the internet and that they were sending a new one or I could go to the branch for one quicker. A few key things here: He asked me nothing. Not my name, address, SSN, card number, PIN - nothing. Also, he said to go to the branch office... risky for a scammer to do. Finally, there were no online information exchanges - no web sites, no forms - nothing. A legit company will try to handle it that way first because of the inherent problems with online anonymity. I went to the branch and they said they knew nothing about it but there was indeed a new card on its way to my home and they cancelled it and put in for an immediate one for my convenience. Always check with the source by initiating contact - never reply or let them call you. Ask yourself if they are seeking any info or do they already have it and are giving it to you? Finally, DTA - Don't Trust Anybody!

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the problems come mostly from me forwarding to you@aol.com and "you" says "This guy spammed me." by clicking on the report spam buttons. It may not be intentional but in my case I had a web page client that I was forwarding for and he was reporting the spam as spam. The problem started when AOL through its laziness reported to TCH that *I* was the spammer rather than the original source of the email.

My favs are the Truth commercials about not smoking. They have a unique way of making it real.

Though this may be a good thing, most of the ones I've seen in other places have turned into a "Why can't I have it my way - you guys are stupid" thing. I personally like it that Head Guru takes the time to asks us and I'm sure it's better for him to be able to schedule it a little so that when he asks there are enough resources available to make things happen instead of getting slammed at "the wrong time".

I like those suggestions, Cloudrm. It's not just those who are too new to know and too shy to ask - there are a lot of us "old timers" that can benefit from some of those things you mentioned. Two that stand out are the web-creation software-specific forums, at least for the big ones (Dreamweaver, FrontPage, GoLive, etc) and the browser compatibility. I like those especially because they are things we could benefit from as web designers, they are totally community oriented and would fit our family well, and they have a great deal of useful content which will both help our family members and make Scott feel better about the SEO angle.

A fellow told me the other day that he'd give me a "crash course" in how to use a Mac that he was giving my martial arts instructor. I told him that since it's a Mac it's probably appropriate to have a crash course. I couldn't resist. Truth is that they all crash (PC and Mac and others) - they're computers, it's their job. Hi Laura! Welcome to the family! Someone will be along later to add you to the family but I wanted to tell you that your site looks pretty doggon good for a new first-site and the photos are awesome. I envy you the scenery but not the temperatures. The water here is great but there are only so many photos one can take of sun, palm trees, boats, water and derived-from-poverty architecture.

Kussie, I'm sorry to have to delete your post but the forum guidelines state "Family Members may not use the Forum for commercial gain. " Since your script is for-fee, promoting it is considered commercial gain.

This is similar to a programmer's code review. Basically one programmer on a team gives complete access to his code to the others who review it line by line in hopes of finding better methods of doing something or a flaw in the code. I had a boss once that was burned by people laughing at his self-taught methods and would not do a review. I asked him to cause a review on my code because I know the other guys on the team were brilliant and could add something to my code. There were some things they criticized but many others they commented on as being good. Either way I came out a better programmer. If a company takes a hack-attack as ammo against their admins they have a much bigger underlying problem. The only time this may be a real problem is if someone gets in on port 1800 and the admin says "I thought ports only went to 255!" - then they really do need new staff There are a ton of analogies - for example, Florida Power & Light does an energy survey of your home for free. They don't say "Boy, the guy that built this house is an idiot!" but rather "If you weather strip the door you'll save $20/month.! Finally madmancp, beware what you hear. It's real easy for me to say "Those losers fired me because TCH is such an invasive part of one's life." but it may be more true to say "I got fired for goofing off on company time." (By the way, I'm taking a late lunch if anyone is wondering )

Although what Robert says is generally true, it is also true that if you avoid offending anyone you will end up saying nothing at all. Comedy is the fine line between offending someone and amusing them. If they are insecure or have issues about something then they may choose to be offended. It's probably pretty clear what would be over the top here in these forums. Besides, women and even men today change their hair color so much you couldn't possibly know what it really is anyway.

Justin: You'd probably have to change it in the mailing list program. Tracy: I have found the same thing to be true. The reason for this question was really how little I knew about the behind-the-scenes of web sites and how limited other hosts are. Once I found out about the .htaccess and how to get Apache to parse the files no matter which name I used everything got better. As I said previously in this thread. TCH is awesome and I'm so glad all of us found it. Now we just need to tell everyone else about it!

Yes, but they usually call themselves Security Consultants. As long as the proper owner of a system contracts for your services then what could be wrong with it?
