Good point. No sense tempting folks to use your stuff wrongly. It's like a security company sticker on your front door... it makes the "casual criminal" think twice about it. The hardcores will go anyway but nothing will stop them. If someone does abuse it then they may hear the judge say "Ignorance of the law is no excuse."

I don't know terribly much about Invision but if you post your url it may help someone looking to help. -
Thanks Thomas... but I wonder if it's a good test. It says 0/0/0 with IE

Great answer David and thanks for asking, Steve. More than one of us has wondered that in passing as well.

Welcome to the family!!! It's always great to have new family members to chat with, help, get help from, talk about silly things, whatever. If you ever need anything just ask!

about.com used to have (and I assume still does have) several web-design-related forums at various levels and for various aspects.

Welcome to the forums and the family, Eloy! If you look in your Cpanel for web statistics, you will find AWStats which is good to help find out where the bandwidth is going. It will tell you which search engines are using your bandwidth and the most often visitors and many other things.

Awesome pics Weezy - they are indeed adorable! You should make a farm-babies calendar!

I forward most of my email to a (free) Gmail account and let it filter the spam and they automatically delete spam after a certain number of days (I forget exactly how many - I think it's 30.) With Spam Assassin marking it Spam I'm thinking Gmail gets some help but even things that slip past SA are caught by Gmail so I believe them to have a good filter system and it's trainable too... you can say "this is spam" or "this is not spam" and they adjust their filters to your say-so. I don't know if it's a solution that will work for you but thought I'd mention it. The only other thing I can think of is that, as Bruce mentioned, email clients can manipulate email, deleting some and leaving others, via POP or IMAP so if you get one with good filtering abilities you could possibly make something that would work like that. Don't give up yet... others may have a great idea they will post soon.

Claudia, Another thing to consider is that when you tell the world that your site is now "over here" instead of "over there" it takes up to a couple of days for everyone out there to get the word. During this time it would be best to have your site up at both locations... that way no matter which way folks get directed they will see your site. Because of this I'd have it set up and ready to go 3-5 days before "pulling the plug" and then start the process to switch locations (aka. changing the name server entry with the registrar for your domain name). Welcome to the forums and if you need any help just ask!

Another tool I've started using is Picassa which Google just aquired. If you have a bunch of photos and want to make a web page "gallery" it will do it automatically for you. If your photos change a lot it may be worth going to a PHP solution like Coppermine but if they don't then I find it much easier to just pick the photos in Picassa and answer a couple of questions about it and let it make an HTM page for me. An example of this is at covenantwordchurch.org/Trips/Jerusalem%202005/Jerusalem%202005/index.html Disclaimer: This is a page from a site I manage for a church. If religious items bother you then don't go there. They are photos of my pastor's visit to Jerusalem.

Serpentine is right - never hide stuff on your site for better search engine results... it's risky and may get you banned. Besides, the benefit is tiny. A good way to see what the search engines see is to go to your site in a browser and view the page source. Engines generally read only what you will see there as text.

I don't know ... just look at all the vastly available open source alternatives to Microsoft Windows... We have Linux but it's not accepted into the mainstream consumer world and I'm afraid that this merger give us the same in the graphics world - "use us or suffer." If I made a program like that *I* wouldn't try to compete with "AdobeMedia".

Hey Staci! This is awesome - a new baby sister and we don't have to change any dirty diapers or listen to bawling babies!!! How cool is that! Welcome to the family - if you need anything just ask!

Consider your target audience. If a significant number of them have older browsers then PNGs may not be the way to go since the older browsers didn't consistently support them. If most of them have the new browsers you shouldn't have a problem. You can check your AWStats to see what they are using. Note: "significant" and "most" are for you to define based on your site type, purpose, audience, etc.

Le Parkour as is the 7Mb video at www.le-parkour.com/speedairman.ram That is some super-power because no normal person could possibly do all that no matter what they say about anyone can do it.

Welcome to the forums, Mish!

Excellent points, Lee. I perhaps oversimplified and meant only to counteract the normal tendency for people, when hearing about the "power of DMOZ", to go all out and lose sleep trying to get on it at all costs and ignoring all the other opportunities. Nice explanation of the "friend-of-a-friend" effect on how the link spreads too.

That's great Bill! There are a lot of sites out there in ASP and I'm sure this will make an awesome addition to TCH's line of low-cost and high-quality offerings.

Actually I'd search for "Ireland web design", but that's just me I didn't know that. How do they do that? Is it based on some IP address lookup? Makes me wonder what else Google is doing behind the scenes.

echo anyone this is atleast the 10th time somone who has said that since i joined last september. even though i am not a avid poster unlike others. Guess you just have to jump in there and start posting like a mad man so that your number of posts goes into the double digits at least. We just like to make everyone feel welcome! By the way, if no one has told you lately, welcome to the forums!

DMOZ feeds other sites so it is usually a tiny boost to get in there. With DMOZ I have read from an expert I respect that you should submit and forget... if you get in, fine but if not then don't beat yourself up about it... there are other opportunities to pursue for links.

What Don said is mostly true. If you have a well-designed and well-optimized site for poached eggs in Dublin and someone enters "Dublin eggs, poached" they will probably find you. However... There was much discussion elsewhere awhile back that Google in other countries, such as www.google.co.uk does give bonuses to sites that are hosted on that country's (UK) servers but the discussion went from extremes of a slight boost to can't get in unless you are there so I'm not sure how much it matters or if it still even applies. If your business is in Wexford and your host is in Tullamore (approximately 80-ish miles away, both in Ireland) I would bet money that it will make no difference whatsoever at that level and would bet reputation that hosting in the US wouldn't make a difference in the google.com listings. Besides, and I have no clue on this, how many people in other countries use google.whatever instead of the much simpler google.com? Perhaps where English is a non-prevalent language and they want to see the pages in French, for example, but I've not seen any stats.

Welcome John! If it's possible the help desk techs will hook you up. Glad to have you here.
