  1. The robots.txt and meta tags keep "nice" crawlers out of your site. Fo a "belt and suspenders" approach, it can be a good idea to put a blank index.html at the top level of your site (i.e in the public_html directory). Then just use a name like test1.html as your real index page while testing. Security by obscurity! That way, even if there is a link to yoursitename.tld (from a whois directory, for example), the rogue crawlers will be stumped! Also hides things from curious humans. ...dave
  2. Welcome back, dsdemmin! Thanks for setting me straight on the PR level. I used to use altavista for everything, but now I almost never check them. Many SEO sites these days are definitely concerned about the state of google. ...dave
  3. Jim... While we are still waiting for our SEO guru, I thought I would add another wrinkle. You are not going to like this, but now you are #3 in altavista behind cogop and stpaulskw. You are still numero uno in google, though, and that counts for a lot! I am still holding on the position that google does not display backlinks with PR < 4, even though it still knows they exist and counts them when ranking your page. Using the free digitalpoint.com tool to track keywords and backlinks (it uses the google API), here's the results I get for the three churches of interest: Site (# Backlinks) cogop (72) stpaulskw (14) covenantwordchurch (2) BTW, my site shows 0 backlinks in google even though I *know* that I have some. Just none with PR 4 and above. Just more fuel for the discussion! ...dave
  4. Welcome, Chuck! It should inflate your ego to know that Head Guru only picks the best! ...dave
  5. Shogun, I only represent one data point, but I run my site with MT for content management (+ PHP and MySQL to serve up dynamic image requests) and have never had a server timeout error. How many entries are you talking about? Are you getting the error on rebuild or just viewing the site? Anyway, don't forget that TCH has a money-back guarantee! Hope you join the family! ...dave
  6. While you are waiting on dsdemmin, I have the following to offer: I have read that google only lists backlinks with a PR of at least 4. All backlinks are counted, but only those with PR > 3 show up when you list 'em. ...dave
  7. Perfect sense! Thumbs Up It also explains why the lines are only split on the "traffic analysis" graphs. Thanks, HG! ...dave
  8. Just a simple question (the engineer in me can't resist) : On the server graph pages, like this one for Server 11, can someone explain the difference between the blue line and the green line on the top two plots? Not a burning issue. ...dave
  9. I forgot to say it before, but, Welcome to the TCH Family! ...dave
  10. Jennifer, Take a look at this really long thread on various attempts to stop pic stealing. By the end of the topic they had some scripts that made it hard to grab an image. There are ways to slow people down, but you can't stop 'em altogether. kw has good advice, but unless you want to get lawyers involved, it is really hard to stop someone on the net who doesn't give a darn about right and wrong. good luck, dave
  11. Aknot... If you are desparate (and are just looking for specifics), you can always download the raw files from Cpanel, then filter/sort the entries in a speadsheet. You can count the lines that have the specific file you are looking for. Every hit shows up as a line in a log file, so you will see image files as well as page files. If there is a " 200 " in a log line, that means the file was downloaded successfully. If there is a " 304 " code instead, that means that the file was already in the browser's cache. The file wasn't downloaded, but the user saw the local copy. HTH, ... dave
  12. I bet you could do it if you upgraded to a dedicated server! Early on in my TCH experience, I too wanted to do user privilege management, but I have accepted the current realities. ...dave
  13. LeLa, Until one of the TCH gurus chimes in, here's a quick answer from a member: Yes you can download raw log files as often as you want via cpanel, but the transfer will count against your bandwidth. It is a monthly log, and gets bigger as the month progresses. Downloads do not "clear" the log. At least in my "default" config. When I tried the cpanel test drive, the log file returned is zero size. (Not very representative!) It also had a .net extension. I attached a little snippet of one of my log files for your perusal. I hope you join the TCH family. Rock Sign ...dave log_snippet.txt
  14. strodeath... Sorry for your frustration. Sent me a PM (hit the PM bottom of this post) and I will help you out in "noob" terms. It's just too tough in forum-land! ...dave
  15. Thanks for the info. Source forge pages can be a bit cluttered! Here is the "real" download link: **http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=60333&release_id=153764 Click on the sfm-v24.zip link, pick a mirror site close to you, then click on the little download icon. Unpack the files on your PC, read the README in the docs folder, edit the source to fit your domain, then upload to TCH. I know it is a lot of steps, but they should each be pretty fast. good luck and let me know if you get stuck. ...dave
  16. schussat, Yes, I do have personal experience with the Simple File Manager package. It works well, but had too many features for me. So I stripped it down to limit it to a single directory, etc. Also, I had to increase the allowable file size. Not too difficult. I was going to do some more, but I got distracted. It my be possible to restrict it to just upload, but I haven't really tried. Here's my version (ugly as it is): ***http://www.wilexa.com/drop/fm.php ...dave
  17. strodeath, Did you try the demo link I posted? Is that the kind of upload/download interface you are looking for? I am getting a little confused. 1. Are you looking for a way for people to upload files, pictures for instance, and have them available for the masses to download? 2. Or are you looking for a way for people to post web pages on your site? 3. Or none of the above? It might help to know the type of files you want be shared (pix, documents, songs (but be careful on that one )). Is your site plain-jane static html (plus a forum, I guess) or dynamic MySQL driven? The more specific you can be, the more help you will get. ...dave
  18. There are a bunch of scripts around that you can download. A simple file-manager-like interface version can be downloaded at ***http://sourceforge.net/projects/onedotoh/ Here's a demo: ***http://onedotoh.sourceforge.net/demo/fm.php If you know your way around PHP a bit, it is easy to configure. There are also a bunch at hotscripts.com. good luck, dave
  19. Here's a line from my log September log file: >4.46.110.189 - - [21/Sep/2003:00:25:45 -0400] "GET /lb/images/turbobobcat.mov HTTP/1.1" 200 1889888 "http://wilexa.com/lb/whatsnew.php" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Hotbar 4.3.5.0)" It just shows the IP address in the first field. How did you get the "reverse IP" to resolve in your logs? ...dave
  20. Congratulations, your site is up! Good news: I just checked and can see the front page. Bad news: Images are missing and the links don't work. But it's a great start. Good luck, dave
  21. Uh, oh. It looks like you have the dreaded DNS problem! I pinged your site and www.produb.com resolves to 0.0.0.1 This is a rare event, but it does occur occasionally. Tell the help desk folks and they will take care of it for you. ...dave
  22. I don't know anything about JavaScript, but did you try changing the line to: >document.write(today); ...dave
  23. Albert, Did you double-check that the files are in your www or public_html folder by going to the Cpanel file manager? www.yoursitename.com/cpanel Remember: files here are case-sensitive!! If you tell us your site name, some members here can take a look for you. Do you get a blank page, a 404 error or what? We can help you better if you let us know: 1. Software you used to create your pages. 2. Software you used to upload your pages. But a good idea in your case would be to submit a help ticket and the staff can make sure the files are really there. https://ssl.totalchoicehosting.com/supportdesk/ Sorta rambling, but I hope we get you fixed up! ...dave
  24. You must be special, ogged, because I have only seen IP addresses in my "latest visitors" page since I joined TCH in February! Then again maybe I am going blind, or senile, or both. ...dave
  25. It is the TCH good luck karma at work! If you post, you WILL find an answer soon. Whether from other family members or by yourself! ...dave
