Deverill Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Hey gang, I have been fighting a flood of emails at work this week (I'm part of the IT team at our company) and wondered the impact of these latest worms (Blaster and SoBig mostly) on the rest of the family. We have content filters and anti-virus in place and don't allow the .scr and .pif attachments that SoBig uses to get in so it is not infection we face, but we have had over 9000 messages blocked that had it in them! We aren't a huge company like Microsoft or anything and we got this many in 3 days. (www.historictours.com is the site of my workplace if you are interested.) From the news sites it seems that lots of big names are getting hindered by this even if it doesn't "get in". Anyway, how has this latest worm release affected you folks? Also, Sobig.F came out the day after SoBig.E expired, as I understand it... they say SoBig.F expries on 9/10... do you think there is any correlation to that and is SoBig.G going to be a big-nasty, nothing special or just some kind of a memorial of 9/11/01? By the way, I have several addresses on web pages hosted at TCH and have not received even one infected email so if you are looking for a new host and stumble on this take it for what it's worth! greatfolios sysop Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 So far for me, nothing.... Our IT dept at work though (www.tweeter.com) they are busy chaseing down all of the virus problems on the tweeter servers.... :Nerd: Mr. Bill Quote
Larry Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 i'm pretty sure totalchoice blocks emails with a .pif attachment.. which really rocks during times like these. my corporate email simply removes the virus, and sends the rest of the msg to me. I just hope most of the people I've sent a msg to have removed my address from thier address book.. I've gotten about 5 so far today.. Quote
ejh Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 I was hit hard by that sobig.f... Mad!!! After three days of trying patches- all of which failed, I just went in and bought Norton Antivirus for $50. Oh well- My email is back to working... Quote
TCH-Rick Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 In looking through the mail logs while working on Help Desk tickets I can say that I have seen a large number of rejected emails due to the .pif attachments. I've made sure I updated my anti-virus definitions. Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 I let Norton Antivirus auto update itself, no problems Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 At home I have had no email try to come through with those attachments. At work, Dept of Education, we have had a good number make it without the payload. I would give a guess of about 900 or so. Quote
Digirunt Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 I havn't yet been hit by any of these little nasties but I am getting five or six of the below virus sent daily with a zip file containing a HTML page attached which if opened in IE causes havoc or if opened in firebird does nothing. [Firebird Rulz!] Hello there, I would like to inform you about important information regarding your email address - saint52.com. This email address will be expiring. Please read attachment for details. --- Best regards, Administrator layccez The name at the bottom is randomly generated rubbish? Show how safe IE is - Microsoft lists it as a security hole? IE is one big hole if you ask me. Quote
Deverill Posted August 24, 2003 Author Posted August 24, 2003 Show how safe IE is - Microsoft lists it as a security hole? IE is one big hole if you ask me. I agree and would add that the same could be said for Thunderbird versus Outlook! Microsoft! Honestly I am glad Microsoft exists, especially as a programmer, but boy could they learn a few (hundred) lessons from the rest of the world!!! Quote
section31 Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 I really have a problem with other people having that Sobig worm. My yahoo mail is being flooded every 15 minutes causing my mailbox to overload. It really pisses me off...you know how inconvenient it is to switch primary emails..grrrrrr Quote
