I'm having problems setting up a mailing list, using Mailman.

I can post to my list, however, I always get a bounced message as well stating:

"You are not allowed to post to this mailing list, and your message has

been automatically rejected. If you think that your messages are

being rejected in error, contact the mailing list owner at

Mailman-owner@server10.totalchoicehosting.com."

Any ideas?

Thanks...

I was just about to ask about that too. I get the same message along with the sent message. I'm on server 23.

My list has been set up for a few months and has been working fine until recently. It got fixed up for me and now I'm getting that "not allowed" message.

I just made a test mailing list, when i made it I got this message.

>To finish creating your mailing list, you must edit your /etc/aliases (or
equivalent) file by adding the following lines, and possibly running the
`newaliases' program:

I made a mailing list previous to the cpanel upgrade just messing around and didnt get a message like that, could that have anything to do with the errors ppl are having now?

I've just set one up on a test account I use. I got the same message as leezard when I set it up, but I went on to test and use it - it all worked perfectly.

I didn't get any mail message saying I couldn't post.

Do you get any other errors? or just the not allowed message?

I get a copy of the message I sent and a not allowed message. Like I said, before the cpanel upgrade it worked perfectly and I've made no changes in the admin panel or anything like that.

I'm not a user of mailman and, to be honest, I am not certain of what changes, if any, are made in third party products between upgrades

Getting a copy of your own message can be turned on / off on the general admin page.

Looking at things a bit more, there are a number of possible causes of this msg.

Are you a member of your list? as well as being the administrator?

Looking at various reports around the web, this does seem to be a recent problem.

The good news is that it seems you can just ignore the email it sends you. All the messages go out fine.

I got the same message that leezard did regarding the creation of /etc/mail/aliases. On one of my tests, I did copy the text from the message to create an aliases file, and pushed it up. No luck.

Members can send to the list and see their messages, as administrator, I see a bounce for everything posted.

I'll ignore the messages and keep looking around.

Thanks everyone.

This is a known issue with cPanel. This is effecting every cPanel host right now.

cPanel is aware of the issues and we hope they are working to resolve the issue.

Let me take a moment to explain the aliases situtation. The output you see containing the email aliases is the output from the Mailman program that creates new lists. It outputs those aliases so that sites that use some email servers (e.g. sendmail) can copy-and-paste that directly into their aliases file.

Now, we here at Total Choice Web Hosting are using Exim as the email server (that may be a CPanel thing, I'm honestly not sure). Exim is very configurable, to the point that, since Mailman mailing lists follow a nice little pattern, Exim can actually be configured to automatically recognize and properly handle mailing list messages (passing them along to Mailman) without the need for additional configuration for each individual mailing list that is created.

It's a beautiful thing. :D

So the code that it says to copy and paste to the aliases file is not needed since total choice uses exim?

just wanna make sure I understand that correctly in case it comes up in the future.

Glad I found this thread -- I have the same problem.

Oddly, when I changed the auto-acknolwedgment text to read: "your post has been received and is being distributed", the problem became more random -- it now occurs 50% of the time, roughly, with no discernable pattern.

In fact, some people will get the "good" ack message, followed by the "huh" ack message!

And as someone said, the good news is that the messages still go out!

I'm just turning off auto-ack until this gets fixed, which is easy enough.
