I thought it would be interesting to jot down the best "pearls of wisdom" you've received or quotes that you've found to be useful.

Let's see where this goes.

You can list as many "pearls" as you want. Feel free to reference the source.

Can be about life, business, love, whatever.

I'll start:

Business:

"Make it a point to keep on the look out for novel and interesting ideas that others have used successfully. Your idea has to be original only in adaptation to the probelm you are currently working on."

Thomas Edison

(ie don't reinvent the wheel)

Life:

"Life is a series of decisions that you have to make with insufficient information."

My father

I forget exactly where it's from, but I always liked this one:

Illegitimati Noli Carborundum

I'll let ya all think about it for awhile before I put it in English--maybe someone around here will know the translation from Latin :D

"Don't be ashamed for what you don't have but be proud of what you do have."

(rough German to English said by my father in law when I think he was really suggesting I needed to paint the house)

Should that be

"Illegitimati non carborundum"?

Humm... you guys are going to have to tell me to shutup on this thread... I have the most huge file filled with great wise quotes :D

Some of these are a bit deep so if you don't get them at first, keep them in your head and sooner or later you'll be confrontated with a situation that will make it clear to you. At least that's what happened with me :D

Here we go:

"I have the world's largest collection of seashells. I keep it scattered on beaches all over the world. Maybe you've seen some of it." - Steven Wright

You may be right turtle, I've seen it spelled both ways--we had it engraved on a plaque in our workshop when I was stationed in San Diego--the best we got was from the UCSD Language Dept:

"Loosely translated, 'Don't let the bast***s grind you down'"

"Simplify"

Yesterday is a memory.

Tomorrow is a dream.

Today is a gift... that is why we call it the present.

To achieve all that is possible

we must attempt the impossible.

To be as much as we can be,

we must dream of being more.

"Good brings good. Evil brings evil. You choose."

What it means to me: your choices dictate their outcome. I don't know that there is an "author" of this saying. I have heard it most of my life and now my son is learning by it's thruth. In my mind, it allows for no blame to be placed on others for the consequences of your own actions. You are the master of your own life. You have the power to bring good into your life and the lives of those around you. You also have the power to destruct and can only expect destruction in return.

My very favorite:

The Way to Freedom from Care and Pain

So think as if your every thought were to be etched in fire upon the sky for all and everything to see. For so, in truth, it is.

So speak as if the world entire were but a single ear intent on hearing what you say. And so, in truth, it is.

So do as if your every deed were to recoil upon your heads. And so, in truth, it does.

So wish as if you were the wish. And so, in truth, you are.

So live as if your God Himself had need of you His life to live. And so, in truth, He does.

From The Book of Mirdad, Mikhail Naimy
