ironmozart Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Hello Members, I have been experiencing server downtime with my current host (HostDepartment), and was told by their live support that all web hosts experience downtime. Now I understand no host can have 100% uptime all the time, but the downtime I'm getting seems to be out of the "norm". Here is a 2 month report from a site monitor service I use: 03/24/06 11:19 No reply 5 hours, 53 minutes 03/15/06 14:36 No reply 21 minutes 03/06/06 20:21 No reply 29 minutes 03/05/06 21:42 No reply 22 minutes 02/27/06 04:54 No reply 21 minutes 02/24/06 20:22 No reply 21 minutes 02/21/06 19:01 No reply 21 minutes 02/20/06 18:11 No reply 21 minutes 02/11/06 06:27 No reply 56 minutes 02/11/06 00:20 No reply 2 hours, 11 minutes Does that seem normal for most hosts? It still averages about 98% uptime so being a newbie that I am, I'm not sure if its normal or not? What do you guys/gals think? Don Quote
TCH-Andy Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Welcome to the forums Don Personally, if it was down that much, I'd be moving. Have you contacted the host to find out what the issue is? Is the server down, or is it a routing problem to the server? I'm guessing that they are all 21 mins because you check every 7 mins (and the 21, 29, 56 are all multiples of your 7 min check). Quote
stevevan Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Ouch! True, all web hosting companies experience downtime (obviously some more than others). No, that does not look normal to me. I'm with Andy...I'd be looking for a new host...especially if my site were critical (i.e. business or job related, etc.). Oh...and welcome to the forums! Quote
cajunman4life Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Yea, I looked at HostDepartment before I came to TCH. I'm glad I'm here. Quote
jayson Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Can not be good business to be down for 5 plus hours And welcome to the family Quote
TCH-Don Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Welcome to the forum, Don I came from a host like that, I am very happy I landed here. Quote
ironmozart Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 Thank you all for your replies. I'm strongly considering moving my sites here. Don Quote
TCH-JimE Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Welcome to the forums Don!. If we can be of any further help, then please do let us know. If your current hoster uses cpanel, its relatively simple to switch to us if you choose that path. Even if they don't, switching won't be a problem JimE Quote
j2k4b Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Welcome to the forums... I have tried many hosting companies in the past including HostDepartment... Bad news! I am honored to be a TCH Customer for life. Quote
Prel Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 It is really much time it are of air . But I see in this way, the time of reply in the solution of the problems is very important e in this my note is TEN for TCH . Then I suggest that it comes to TCH. Quote
Head Guru Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Every host has downtime. Every network has downtime. Every server has downtime. Every router has downtime. Every switch has downtime. It is a fact of life. The better hosts are setup with redundant network connections, switched and routers. Having a 100% uptime network is only as good as the servers you cage on that network. We average better than 99.95% on our server farms for uptime. Does this mean we never have a server go down for more than .5% Nope I learned from the TCH client base. They want a honest host that will communicate the issues with them . That is why we created these forums. I wish you all the luck in finding the right host for your needs. Bill Quote
