Welcome to the forums! I would suggest you have your laptop side-by-side with your desktop and, following chatbug's suggestions, compare settings on both systems. Since you said the laptop works, make the desktop settings the same as the laptop.

Well, that's why I went to a Linux router/firewall/server network in my house. My son was on the computer looking at "those" sites a o-dark-thirty in the morning. Showing him the "files" that were left behind (all the ones mentioned in this thread that most people fail to realize are there) didn't help. He thought he was smarter than the old man. (Read "young punk tho't old geezer didn't know about electronics or computer networking" even though he knows I've been working in the stuff for over 20 years.) So I now have limits on Internet access from my home network...certain hours and certain sites. He finally asked why he couldn't get to the internet and things evolved into "the talk".

While I haven't played with Phpbb in a while, I remember seeing that statement written in the instructions for both initial installation and upgrade.

I know there are several makes/models of wireless print servers (mostly USB models). As far as a scanner goes, I've never really tried it. For security, you'd want to encrypt and limit access to your network. On mine I've got mine set to WEP, 128-bit with a passphrase that is hard to guess. I'm sure it's not the most rock solid in the world, but it's effective. As a side note, I believe I caught an individual sitting near my house accessing wireless networks in the neighborhood (one of my neighbors has one he just set up). I walked up to a car that had an individual just sitting in it hunched over. I saw a laptop and when he saw me approaching he started the car and left. Haven't seen him again, but I did have a talk with my neighbor over his systems security! Just goes to show you that you never know who's out there wanting to access your system!

Yes...a Sharpie is a brand name for a permanent marker. I too have a Lightscribe drive...never gotten around to using it yet, tho'!

Just in case anyone else if following this thread, I was referring to the "el cheapo" hosting companies out there that promise a lot a deliver very little. TCH delivers over and above all other hosting companies (at least that I've found)!
